finally! a strong episode. ive been watching this just because of the hype opm brought given theyre from the same author. but thats not the case anymore. this is the deciding episode for me to watch it as its own series and not just something im merely giving a chance

and you can now clearly understand as to why this is one's main work and opm just being his past time. there's more to mob than saitama. well at least for now
why am i so well drawn into time travel stories?
do i really have that many regrets?

I liked this episode even more than the previous two, this one's really growing on me. For one thing I was amused they committed to the Fitness Club from the end of the last episode. True it quickly does away with it (the joke that Mob is stupid weak because he uses his telepathy for everything was pretty clever), but I really thought it was just a punch line and would never come up again. I was also happy to briefly see the telepathy club again I think they're great.

Most of the episode though was devoted to Mob, and a kind of cute new girl who writes for the school paper, infiltrating (unwittingly in Mob's case) a cult. The induction scene was a little cliche but Mob's dead pan reactions made it work. All in all though this story line really made it a great episode I think. It also pretty seamlessly taught us something about Mob, his emotionlessness is a choice to keep his powers in check. I don't know if you've seen any monster of the week show do a cult episode, this won't blow your mind. Although the smile masks were kind of neat. But it's just well done so it didn't need to.

Survival isn't a matter of emotion or fear of death or whatever, it's a matter of instinct. Your need to eat, sleep, drink, have sex or breathe aren't controlled by your mental state neither are they taught to you: those are inborn drives that you inherit as a living being that is geared towards survival. Sure, you can choose to do neither of those things, but it says much more about humanity's capacity for self-consciouness (which basically allows us to take decisions that go directly against our base instincts) than it does about emotion (or lack thereof). Matter of fact, I find your conflation of survival and emotion particularly weird, as people let themselves die or commit suicide for variety of reasons which, more often than not, are related to a troubled mind i.e. emotions, feelings and all that jizz.

https://www.jstor.org/stable/1413480?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents

It was mentioned that there was a specimen whose ability to experience hunger, pain, thirst and fatigue was loss. Yet, this person continued to live, which seems to imply that survival is dictated by primal instinct alone.

Anyway, upon reading, it seems the correct answer for this argument has yet to be discovered.

If you honestly believe or try to imply that someone who completely repressed or cannot display emotions should by definition be suicidal,

Suicidal suggests an inclination towards voluntary suicide, which isn't what I said.

Then you might want to check yourself google the word "apathy", or for an alternate and much more extreme version, "psychopathy". There are people everywhere around us that live bottling up their emotions and/or without a sense or purpose: I seriously fail to see what would lead you to believe these people don't exist.

Breathing seems to be the only thing I was wrong about. Other than that, apathy seems to comply with what I've said (in the most severe cases).

If applied to measuring the severity of apathy these definitions mean that patients
show apathy to the extent that they show diminished activity due to lack of motivation
(relative to the norms for their age and culture) (8). This distinguishes apathy from other causes
of diminished activity, such as mood disturbance (depression or anxiety), intellectual capacity
(dementia), or attention (delirium).

www.dementia-assessment.com.au/symptoms/aes_guidelines.pdf

Psychopaths do exhibit emotions?

Also, you seem to have missed the whole narrated sequence that spells out exactly what's up with Mob's mental state; it has nothing to do with being emotionless per se, regardless of Dimple's claims (which were barely anything more than cutting remarks meant to mess him up and force him to give in). It's just that Mob's insecurity and aversion towards his own abilities coupled with the isolation he experienced due to his complete absence of social awareness caused him to subconsciously put a semi-permanent lock on his emotions, which have now a direct influence on his psychic powers and send them into overdrive whenever he allows said emotions to leak out.
Mob was mad at Dimple, because his words were a harsh reminder of Mob's own perceived failure as a proper member of society to conform and fit in, words that he had already heard and was already hurt by in the past. That's why he was glad that Dimple turned out to be an evil spirit rather than a human; he now had an excuse to let out some of his pent-up anger. Sure, the face he made before finishing off Dimple was a sorrowful one indeed (and it was most certainly due to some deep seated self-loathing), but that in itself doesn't negate what he felt before.

Yept, I admit I was wrong here. I realised I took the narrator's explanation too literally.

I'd agree that despite going over 100% because of his "rage", Mob still felt pretty restrained in his display of it. However, I believe that was very much intentional. From what I understood, a certain emotion becoming strong enough to go past the limit doesn't necessarily mean that Mob himself has to be completely overwhelmed by it. He was angry alright, but he was still in control. So I guess we can expect somewhere down the road to see what happens when he does actually lose complete control of those emotions.

It's pretty clear his behavior contradicted the explanation.

"before leaking out and going wild. And now, an emotion was swirling about like a torrent, trying to go pass the limit."

The "explosion" also implies an exponential release.

Other than that, pretty much a repeat of what I said.

I guess I would like the series to meticulously establish the principles behind the mob explosion or at least draw on these oddities in the future.

I recall you writing a passage on my criticism towards the action scenes but it seems to be gone. Anyway, I'll just leave this here for others.

The closest comparison to the fights Mob psycho are videos like this

They are similar in the sense that they have little context and have minimal distinguishing features. You watch enough of them and you'll get bored.

My bad for misunderstanding, then. It's just that I wasn't sure whether or not you meant to say that someone without emotions would literally just lay down and die due to a complete absence of the fear of death that, according to you, fuels our ability to survive. I wrote it before I realized that what bothered me with your interpretation of the episode was (as you pointed out yourself) that it was too literal.

"before leaking out and going wild. And now, an emotion was swirling about like a torrent, trying to go pass the limit."

The "explosion" also implies an exponential release.
To me the first sentence only implies that the emotion which provokes the "explosion" has to be strong enough to go over the limit he subconsciously imposed on himself. It doesn't say anything about said emotion taking over and completely dictating his actions and thought processes. Again, just because Mob was able to fully experience anger doesn't mean he somehow had to go on a rampage: until proven otherwise his mind doesn't straight up snap when he reaches 100%.
In this regard, I think "explosion" is more likely to refer to the power outburst Mob goes through at that moment than anything else.

Also, to come back on this particular segment of the episode, the exact word the narrator use to qualify Mob's feeling is 怒り (ikari), which commonly translates as "anger". I'm saying this because I believe part of your sentiment comes from the usage of the word "rage" in the translation, which does admittedly carry much stronger connotation than "anger" and which indeed can't be found in Mob's expression of his emotion. I reckon the translators definitely should've gone for the more generic term, cause while seeing "rage" one can naturally expect completely unrestrained destruction and lashing out, when it's not what actually happens at all.

On a side note, I've picked up the manga recently because I too was curious about this "explosion" deal, and I can say that as more and more "100%" moments of either negative and positive emotions start happening throughout the story -as well as a couple of special cases-, how the whole system operates does become much clearer (not that I thought it was ever particularly unclear to begin with, but repetition does help gain a better understanding of a phenomenon most of the time).

..........................................
It seems you misunderstood me. I asked because I was curious. There was no attempt to sway his opinion. It's pretty apparent that his post could have been confused for sarcasm.
Another misunderstanding on my part, indeed. Since the tone of Fai's post didn't strike me as sarcastic at all, I thought you were genuinely surprised people could've enjoyed the episode that much. (also, I'm a bit familiar with the user and I know sarcastic praise isn't really something he does)

I recall you writing a passage on my criticism towards the action scenes but it seems to be gone.
Probably wasn't me. I don't know nearly enough about either fight choreography, animation techniques or cinematography to counter any kind of criticism toward an animated action sequence (even though I did find Mob's beatdown of Dimple very pleasant to watch).

Yes but the metaphorical description of his emotion as a "torrent" heavily implies his actions will mimic that. Not to mention, the first sentence explicitly says they were going to go "wild". The fact that he barely exhibits any emotion outside of the mob explosion also suggest that the limit is really high. In episode 5, he is seen to be overwhelmed with sadness unlike his somewhat composed posture in this episode. Just imagine yourself unprecedentedly pissed, there's no way you stay tame or composed for long.

In this regard, I think "explosion" is more likely to refer to the power outburst Mob goes through at that moment than anything else.

No, it explicitly mentions multiple times that emotion was what was "bursting". This was further reconsolidated in episode 5. The mob explosion reached 100% 5 minutes after he obliterated the school. After his initial outburst, which was not catalysed by the mob explosion, nothing seemed to follow.

__

Yept, upon checking the manga, the anime seemed to have poorly adapted it. I got a much more distinct impression of anger from the manga. Though, one thing I didn't like in the manga as well, is that he pays too much attention to the mask. When you're pissed, you don't have the patience to pay attention to little details.

The comedy in Mob Psycho doesn't appeal to me much, so the first two episodes didn't really do much for me, but I think this episode has gotten me to care a bit more for Mob's struggle. A boy who has to suppress all his emotions at the time of his life where one's emotions normally go out of control. Definitely has me interested in where this will go next. Animation and music are still top notch as usual. Still have the OP stuck in my head.

I'm glad I gained some insight into who Mob is under the mask of his apparent stoicism.

My only nitpick is that his emotions didn't seem to be really running wild during his explosion. His hair was floating, he had a crystalline aura, and he had an intense look on his face, but he didn't seem to be raging. Well, I guess rule of cool was at play.

Reigen is excellent at making you feel bad and good at the same time, using a mix of compliments and insults. Well, perhaps he is exactly the mentor Mob needs, even if he's not the one he deserves.

Crazy religious bitch. "It's about your grades...no, your family...your health...love?" Mob is one of maybe 2% of people socially awkward and vulnerable enough to fall for that, which I guess is why it's an occurrence in real life.

I was expecting those masks to be laced with some really good acid, but then remembered Japan's regulations on drug use on TV.

I wasn't expecting Mob's explosion to start progressing so fast, considering how slow it was in the first two episodes. Mob's full form is pretty amazing.
