Higurashi is slowly becoming one of my favourite series of Fall anime season 2020.
SHIT! The mystery is that the slowly unfolding is fantastic- first with the cover-up death of the construction worker in the small town and now a second Rika (a dead Rika) in a shattered glass dimension. Multiverse?? Time travel?? I am confused, rewatchers are confused? VN readers are a bit confused. I just really hope that the anime can deliver on the mystery that it is brewing.

Is it a remake/reboot? It is a sequel? It is just retelling but with additional content? I don’t know but I am VERY interested to see how this play out.

The OP is pretty good and the visual are brilliant too- few like they might be potential spoilers in there that I mean I have missed.

The balance of mystery, thriller and slice of life is done really well. While you want to dwell into the mystery of the “peaceful” Hinamizawa, you are bombarded with the sweet, fun and comedic elements of the show. Then you reminded why the show hooked you in the first place with small sinister and ominous looks and emotions from certain characters.

I am really liking how these first couple episodes have really being character-driven/ focused and Rena is stealing the show. I really can figure out her character- she really does intrigue me. I am still wondering is this quirky and cute personality a cover for something more sinister or is a split personality type deal. All the girl seem incredibly smart and cunning so that EPISODE 1 opening kill scene is still surprising. How do they end up in that situation?

Tomitake is a character I don’t really trust yet; he is definitely up to something suspicious and I can’t wait for found out.
Can’t wait for next week episode.

Okay. So I'm completely new to Higurashi series. After reading the comments above I want to know if I should watch the original series first or is this one okay for a newcomer? Some people are saying that it's kind of a sequel. So I'm kind of worried about that. I haven't watched the second episode yet.

In an interview the writer said that old and new fans alike can watch the series

It doesn't seem like a sequel because it doesn't take place after Higurashi. It's more like it's canon within the span of Higurashi's timeline. Not a remake of the original anime, but more of an alternative retelling of the events of Hinamizawa, including the core story itself. Still conidered canon most likely, and not a side story. Definitely best to read the visual novel or watch the 2006 anime before watching this, if you want to get the most enjoyment out of the series here.

This episode was like one of the BRUH moments.
So, In the 2nd episode, are you going to tell me that there are Fucking multiple timeline character's conscious shifts going on. The visuals were lovely, and the low key creeps were coming throughout the episode.

But the episode confused me a bit. I can't come up with a way to explain the fact that the show has a 'show all tell nothing' kind of vibe going on, but this is confusing me a little.

{Maybe, I am overseeing things. It feels like a moe faced - Serial Experiment Lain-Esque show relying upon the multiple timelines, to Steins Gate, a person.}

It's normal for you to be confused since this is the third season of Higurashi
what this is a sequel, not a remake.
I looked up and many people told that {with spoilers, I don't want them so I didn't saw them.} this is like a sequel which start as same time as the original. But, This is going to be a weird ride.

I can't tell if it was translated correctly or not, but I don't know why it wouldn't be.

もう目が覚めたとき、最初にあんたの顔を見ることはないって思ってたわ。
I'd like to chime in on proper contextual translation of the line, but I'm probably going to lose context here.
もう目が覚めたとき - can mean "again, when I woke up" or can mean "anymore, when I woke up..."
最初にあんたの顔を見ることはないって思ってたわ - in the beginning (at first), I thought I won't be able to see your face.
So:
"When I woke up, I thought I wouldn't be able to see your face anymore/again."

I think this is referring to just moments before when she woke up and she started staring out into the distance the wrong way, towards the temple.

The correct translation should be:
"I thought I wouldn't see your face first thing when I wake up anymore."

Sailor Moon Crystal and Full-Metal Alchemist are remakes. You don't have to watch the OGs at all to watch the remakes. This - you need to know the whole story or it will make zero sense. Yes, it's not a direct sequel, what that's the closest word to explain what it is. And it is not a remake in any sense.

OP: good but curveball, was really expecting the old OP, it stings me so much
ED: great song, weird vibes but Ayane <3

Animation/Story:
YEYyyyy Hanyuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!
Yes Rika be gentle with me~~~~~
Saw some cases where the curvy W mouth looks weird (esp. Rena while Keichii washing his face)
RIKA'S DANCE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!

Thanks :)

OP song is really good and ED song too standalone but man, they dont fit Higurashi whatsoever. Belongs more in any other anime.

As for the episode, this bored me again. Passione just fails to build a convincingly tense atmosphere whatsoever that is needed for a story like this and it just all fell flat to me. Even the SoL moments didnt really attach me to the cast either. The ending part was okay though as a cutaway and I sort of appreciate the new take on it being from Rika's perspective this time.

They changed up some stuff/added some new things. Interesting. Since they added stuff the ending of the episode was a bit meh. Even though old watchers know what’s going to happen I would have liked it to end with the obvious. As for new watchers that ending will be confusing.

Probably because...it's a sequel. They already lied once about it being a remake so we can't take anything that Ryukishi07 or anyone on the staff says as the truth.

I mean great trolling job by them on people. Making them think it was a remake instead of a sequel up to the second episode. But the truth is out. So time to just work with this as an unexpected sequel and see where they want to go with it.

LOOOOOL, poor new watchers that saw Hanyuu and Rika

Anyways, I'm actually more excited now even though I wanted a full-on remake for my 2nd favorite visual novel.

They've already accomplished something Deen couldn't, full-on slice of life with hints towards something else.

The episode was amazing and especially Rikas dance! The opening and ending were also fantastic although they're spoiling quiet a bit

Ryukishi got us again didn't he? Hope to see Bernkastel in this adaptation

Heard the opening scene with Rika is a spoiler for the series, I don’t really care about spoilers. I don’t have the context to know what it even spoils as I’ve not read the VN or seen the original. A lot of the stuff people claim “spoil things” only makes sense if you have the full story.

I’m just going to enjoy this story for what it is and one day I’ll read the VN/watch the original.

Today’s episode was really good. Enjoyed the slice of life moments a lot. They kinda make you uncomfortable though because you know some shit’s about to go down. Everything’s cute for now, but you just have that dreadful feeling.

Always knew something was up with Photographer dude, either he was the feds or a bad guy and his rendezvous at the end there seems to confirm he’s hiding something

Edit:Something about the whole Yandere vibe Rena gives off is very hot.

It seems like it’s some kind of sequel though, sooo
You do you I guess, but I would still highly recommend watching the og series first

Welp, here we are with episode two! It's clear there's a bit of a new direction, especially when it came to the beginning scene. I'm still a bit skeptical regarding revealing Rika's role in the series so early, but hey, maybe we'll find out why soon with this new course. I'm a teeny bit disappointed that they didn't use the original OP for this adaptation, but the new theme definitely holds up on it's own without a doubt, and is definitely one of my favorites of the season, musically and visually (not to mention seeing a certain SOMEONE in the opening has me very curious). Visuals were also really good this episode, especially the scene with Rika at the end, like no joke, I was stunned with how fluid and detailed it was, and Passione is really giving this their all. While I haven't seen many of their shows (only Ishuzoku Reviewers and Citrus are what I've seen), this is their best work in that department for me, at least from what I've seen of them. The plot is starting to ramp up bit by bit, and even though this episode was still pretty light at heart, it still had that jarring feel that makes Higurashi work within itself. I just hope the story begins to crank up a bit after this, I do think the pacing is going well so far but having this for a few more episodes could become a bit boring? But that's just me, based upon the end of today's episode I know that probably won't be the case.
Oh yeah, and the ED theme is definitely my favorite visually, like o my god its so GORGEOUS I LOVE ALL THE IMAGERY IN IT. Musically it's not my favorite, but lyrically it's extremely fitting to the series. Really excited overall for the next episode, and if next week's episode knocks it out of the park, I'll definitely be way more invested. Not gonna drop it, but I'm very interested in the direction it will take. See y'all next week lol

First things first, they really teased us about the opening, didn't they? :').
In a way i like how they are ordering the story line, but at the same time i think they are spoling some of it. The original didn't tell you most of the stuff until like season 2 and mostly had killings in season 1. Did they always had this much foreshadowing?

So far I'm disappointed. I was looking forward to a remake, as the original Higurashi (VN) is already perfect the way it is. Making a sequel is a risky move. Perhaps I'm worrying too much, but I'm afraid that they will ruin everything. The fact that Ryuukishi himself in involved is not making me any less worried, since I did not like the most recent arc he wrote for it (Kamikashimashi-hen) the slightest.

Well, before judging it I have to wait and see what happens first, though.

The first anime was already a bad adaptation but that was still the same story (with some enormous skip, okay) but here it's spoil the last part of the VN.

For people who already read or watch it, it's okay, but I'm sure a lot of people were trying this one as their first approach of Higurashi...

Huh, so as I said last week, it looks like they are stuck in some kind of time loop where on the 22nd things are going to get crazy.

I wonder what everyone's role is and how much they know? From the first scene it seems that Rika is the one who carries the burden of consciously reliving what happens and doesn't show it or maybe she is not aware of it while reliving it. Then there is Keiichi who seems to have flashes and vague memories of those other timelines. And then there are the other two that are the most unsettling, especially Rena. Like seriously, I love those sudden change of voice. It's so disturbing how she gets rid of all her cuteness in that brief moment.

That said, the SOL moments are pretty fun. Hello bloomers, I've missed you!

It's great how tense this show makes me. I have fun with it, but I always have the feeling that something is going to happen xD.

Not exactly, it's like Arc 2 of Higu or Ep2 of Umineko were, but from what Ryukishi said, Phase 1 was like the questions arc and the other Phases (from 2 to 4) would be Answers Arc.

We expected Higurashi: When They Cry. We got season 3! Because that opening scene definitively is talking about the ending of season 2.

Even though I'm a bit sad the opening isn't the season 1 opening, the new one makes me question a lot of things. All the shadows look familiar yet different.

Keiichi is having flashes about him committing murder with a bat. Rika so far seems uninvolved but, I feel like if he reveals this, things will definitively stir off course.

The chances of this being a sequel are high right now. If i were you, i would watch OG and then come back here. If its not a sequel, it then fails to capitalize on the mistery that OG had while also spoiling everything from the very start.

I Feel bad for newcomers...
