This anime has exceeded my expectations.
This episode was pretty great too.

I like how the anime doesn't use a linear style of story telling, the narrative jumps around in time a lot.

10/10 actual fight instead of shounen talk still frames shit. Best fight of the year so far. All other anime fights this year are nothing special, except WaSuYu ones, anyway though.
Made up for the mediocre episode 4. I'm afraid they won't be topping this fight as the remaining possible enemies are most likely gun users, and sword fights > gun fights. I hope I'm wrong though. Gun fights mostly suck.

Also I thought why they just didn't cut the rope but I guess at that point it no longer matters. Jubei is already on their train and killed their driver. Even without the rope the trains will still collide and Jubei still needs stopping.

If nobody else saw it coming, it's weird. I thought it was telegraphed repeatedly in advance. I was pretty sure of it roughly at the point when the bomb that cut off the train cars blew up, or slightly afterwards.

You know the phrase "so bad it's good"? I think this episode was really stupid, but it was done in a way that I couldn't stop laughing the whole way through.

Let me clarify. I don't really have a problem with the story of the episode. How they met Chise, they kill an Assassin and it was Chise's dad. Fair enough. What made me laugh so hard was the animation the whole way through. They try to have these consistent Sakuga cuts running the whole way through the episode but none of them look natural. Whenever we get a shot of a character running, it looks like they're carrying weights or that they're trying to skip to their destination.

Now imagine this kind of animation quality in a fight scene in the enclosed space of a train while at the same time switching to a fight scene outside the train with Ange flying around everywhere and giving the camera close-ups of her inner thigh once or twice (remember this is still technically an anime about high school girls), all while a badass as fuck Yuki Kajiura song is backing it up, anf you have a recipe to put me in hysterics of laughter.

Seriously though, I swear I like this show and I'm definitively watching it to the end. Hell, if it keeps up this level of quality it might make comedy of the year. Only time, and where the studio throws their budget, will tell.

I'm gonna have to go out and say you're the only one thinking like this to some degree if the worse part of this was the animation for you, judging from reddit it is Ryouma Ebota's Sakuga in case you don't know a lot of his stuff looks so like the characters have weight to them like they should ,the only really goofy looking walk was the guard but i think this is the first time i've seen most of a episode having a lot of noticeable cuts from him so i bet it would be hard to keep it consistent the whole episode.

to each to their own though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i would take this kind choreography over a vast amount of stills or quick cuts ,i personally find his stuff great even the swagger like walks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fk-Ratz4d4

Ah... I had to watch this in a noisy classroom. I was sort of able to hear the voice acting, the sound design or more specifically the sound of the bullets and swords were so satisfying to listen to with my earphones on. The soothing ost that plays during the action scenes have really grown on me.

Funny story: I was watching this episode before and during our school earthquake drill. So while Chise began to chant her little spell on her father's grave, I attempted to hold back tears while we were lined up at the school parking lot. XD!

Edit: Holy crap. I did not notice that the episodes were not in chronological order. Stupid me.

Great episode as always.

The action is always really well executed in this series. The swordfight was awesome.

I kinda had a feeling that Chise's dad was the assassin, that end where she uttered that rhyme and started crying was really heartbreaking. :(

LOL!! I think Chise said she was 19, but still, hilarious nonetheless. Only in anime.

But anyway, good episode. My favorite scene was at the end, when Chise chanted her spell on her heart :'(
Not only in anime, that's complete nonsense. In combat, smallness is actually a huge advantage, because of being a smaller target, lower centre of gravity, and weighing less.

It's not smallness that's the issue; it's the fact that an amateur could easily own a legendary assassin. If smallness were the only indicator for being a great assassin/warrior, then having children serve as soldiers would make a country's army invincible.

Thanks, person who gave me this on another site a long time ago, lol.

What makes you think she's an amateur, she was obviously a very bright student and way excelled at her training.

Finally we get to know her. By the time she killed him, I knew he was her father. Didn't think they need to tell us since it became obvious pretty sure.
Though we wouldn't of had that 'owie, owie go away' scene which was pretty darn sad.
Very action-packed, really loved it, I wish the normal troops got to fight too though.

It can't be understated how important the Boshin war and the situation presented here with the re-negotiation of the 'unequal treaties' and the alliance between Britain and Japan
Played a HUGE in Japan's ultimate militarization and the eventual conflict in the Pacific.
Nice to see a little known part of history presented.

Yet another eye-candy and sensational episode! I'm really loving this show extremely, personally it's my favorite of the season hands down!

Ange and Chise's partnership was thrilling and awesome to see. It will be sad to see Cases 3, 4, 5 and 6 without Chise because she is easily one of my favorite characters of the show. Action sequences in this episode was tensed and therefore fascinating and it didn't even take long to initiate it. Honestly, I enjoyed the swordplay the most especially the fight between Chise and her father. I knew right away that the famous assassin was Chise's father considering what his finals words were. In addition, it was depressing to see her father's healing chants didn't work when Chise help out her hand to her chest and then those tears dripping..

Easy 5/5, like always.

An exciting and really interesting episode as always.
Hmm a diplomatic party from Japan eh. Makes sense that Princess will be the one that will welcome them but as Dorothy said also conveys the thought that the nation considers them below their notice. Hmm surprising that they added in historical events into the series. This must be the first time that Princess has seen this level of humility though. It seems this diplomat is pretty new to his role. Still the negotiation between the two countries sure is a interesting theme for this episode. So this is how Ange and the others met Chise then. Quite an entrance for her though. Meeting on top of a moving train thats pretty unique. Chise really has impressive observational skills. Bodyguards dressed as maids was a nice touch. So Chise was in fact here to take out the assassin eh. Seems this treaty isn't popular with everyone then if an assassin was hunting them. The brief battle between Ange and Chise was cool though. Partnering Chise with Ange eh this should be interesting. Princess's logic is as flawless as ever. Ange's interrogation/talk with Chise was pretty interesting though they just walked through a frozen carriage. Surprising that Chise believes in Ange's story though. Its funny to see Ange can get confused for once lol.

So the duke of Normandy is looking to sabotage the treaty eh. So the duke is already wary of princess then. So Chise has a personal reason for wanting to take down Jubei then. Hmm so an accomplice was on the train eh. Separating the escorts from the target was an interesting move. Ange's gadget really comes in handy this time. Plus it allowed Chise to show off her sword skills as well too. So a race against time before the tracks merge and cause both trains to crash eh. Ange's flying and gun skills combined with Chise's blade really makes them a potent team. Nice that Chise got there in time though. Princess really is full of surprises in that she's always aware of the big picture and not cowardly enough to leave her friends and allies behind. The fight between Chise and Jubei was pretty good. Ange sure had a pretty good knowledge of the train controls though. But man that was a close one as the trains almost made it to the merge. Ah so Jubei was actually Chise's father eh. Must be pretty tough to face him this many times and finally end the battle by killing him. It is sad that the charm that Chise knew was taught by her father that she was forced to kill though. So Chise decided to join them in the school eh. Beatrice's reaction to her entrance was cute.

We are reaching new levels of campiness. Anti-gravity-fu, runaway trains, assassins and revenge. This is not a complaint, though; it was fun. One advantage of the semi-episodic format is that it allows the show to try various different things during its run with only relatively few strings attached.

I really liked Ange and Chise's back and forth, and the little things like Chise's healing "spell" made the otherwise pulpy origin story feel just personal enough.

Case 7, set between episode 3 and 4 (cases 2 and 9, respectively). With this episode, the state of affairs introduced in episode 1 has been mostly explained. Chise is welcomed to the Team, although we know that she's a double agent. The Duke of Normandy has been acting real shady up to this point but now we know he's actively trying to sabotage Princess. She's like a princess from Game of Thrones, this girl.

One other thing to note is that this episode is the first time where some members of Team White Pigeon get seriously hurt. Dorothy is caught in the blast, while Beatrice is knocked out and even has her head almost removed, probably only saved by her modified neck. Her father's horrific experiment didn't save her, of course, because if she hadn't been modified in the first place, Princess wouldn't have taken her under her wings and so she wouldn't be part of this team right now.

It was a goofy looking scene, I'll give you that, and it's fair to criticize it. But I think if they had tried to do more realistic movement it would have looked awkward. This show has never tried to present grounded action, it's been campy since episode 1.

Kabaneri was a similarly goofy show in spirit with animation that aimed for a more gritty and grounded look, and it only escaped a pretentious vibe early on because of the incredible use of effects. Granted, it had some gererally impressive sakuga to go with it, but I still prefer this show over that one. I guess it's just a matter of taste.

Always love a classic western train fight. That card scene & Beat being a bot lol what.
Ange & Chise flying in sync was beautiful.
Strong Chise characterization with that epic samurai duel & surpassing her mentor/father. Tomb scene with the owie magic nicely placed.
3Hz's signature weight shifts pimping that animation.

Assasinnation plot, train, japanese delegation in a western country... This sounds very familiar but I can't remember where I already saw that.

Apart from that, nice action (if I don't consider the weird look the ground camera shots during the blades fight had) and... well... that's it.

3/5 From the princess to an official: "I'll introduce you Grand Mother." Yeah, you certainly talk like this about the Queen in this situation...

I don't think there is anything bad in the fact it was "predictable" here. I thought I was able to guess it because the episode actually wanted it so. Plus, the contrary would have made the scene with the "healing song" purposeless.

This anime keeps getting better and better! Gaaah. Freaking love the fight scenes, especially the fight between Jubei and Chise. Ugh. The music helps a lot, too. Ugh. Ugh.

That plot twist, though. Jubei is Chise's father. That was so sad; I honestly cried. Call me a crybaby idgaf. Haha.

Man, what a rush. That had to be the best case so far, the swordplay especially stealing the show. It was kind of jarring to see Chise's tiny loli body keeping up with Jubei's movements in an explosive exchange.

Also found it kind of peculiar how the Japanese are portrayed as the foreigners for once.

Am I the only one who felt underwhelmed?

-There's no context as to why these assassins are after the Lord.
-Not many twists and turns.
-No flashback or monologues, thoughts, to show Chise's past and her state of mind: her backstory is just stated, and...that's it.
-The reveal of Jubei being her dad was out of nowhere, so I didn't really feel anything.
-The fight between was...just swords slashing. As in, they were always on equal footing, one never dominated the other, no shift in power dominance.

I was actually kind of impressed by the fight scene itself (not the context, obviously).
Chise was constantly doing all those crazy flips in the air, while Jubei stood his ground and made solid, firm, strikes.
It's a really interesting contrast.

I don't remember exactly any more. It had to do with the setup, sounded like it will be a duty vs. family type of story. I was certain when one of the minor assassins called Chise a traitor.

Ryouma Ebata. Great fuking job on this ep! It looked so smooth and so clean, especially the train fight scene. The plot twist with Jubei was alright, but that burial scene was sad as fuck, still.

On the last part though, does it imply that Dorothy SLEPT with Horikawa? If that's the case, then... maaaan, FUCK. Really hope that wasn't the case.

I don't even care if she'll trick me or kill me afterwards, I'd be really glad to sleep with Dorothy. Hoping that she gets more focus/action in the next episodes.

Love this episode, two train fight and some feels.

Going back and watching it a second time, sadly I think the animation outside of fight scenes i n the train cars is not all that great, but the sword fights are great.
Leaving the Japanese voices in the dub for conversations between Japanese was a great move, this dub was super-except for what seemed to be a timing error in one of Todo Jubei's lines.

none of the soldiers got mad about a maid an a Jap ruining their card games lol
also gotta love the classic the 'tracks merging into one line' scenario, hooray for laissez-faire and deregulation XD

So, that's how they met Chise. We got to really see her skills in this episode.

The assassin she killed was actually her father. After burying him, it's quite clear that it was difficult for her to do, but she despised what her father had become, and she felt that she had to stop him.
