AWESOME!!!
I'm really loving this show, definitely my favorite of the season.

The monster almost awakened, but I guess he still can't destroy his opponent, I hope to see Kong often in the series, and of course see SMILE own every opponent from now on.
Currently watching everything that comes out to avoid missing something good...

Isayama Hajime should be awarded The Manga with The Highest Inconsistencies of Characters' Appearances.
He keeps performing multiple plastic surgeries on those Shingeki No Kyojin characters in a SINGLE chapter.
Yes, I've read up to the latest chapter of Shingeki No Kyojin manga.
Forced myself to read through the kidsketching chapters after the anime's ended. At least from now on, I only have to go through the hell once a month.
Patiently awaiting SNK TV/movie/OVA anime-sequel.
The 2015 SNK live-action movie would probably suck.

Yay, the OP isn't just recycled animation anymore.

Holy shit Smile is a boss. That humming and data input, oh man. I get the feeling that by the time the series is over he'll be on my fave character list.

I love the dry humour in this too, looking at you Ocean guy and Kong's 2nd opponent.

This is blood pumping in a whole different way to the usual sports series.

I really don't know what to say that hasn't been already. Something that only I seem to be loving (or people probably forgot to mention) is how Yuasa is constantly playing with perspectives with the fiery direction along with the help of the excellent art direction. The Panelling of scene showing parts of the crowd, the opponent, the coach, Smile's friends which gives a different perspective on a single match/event. Not only does it add a certain quirk to the show, but also adds a layer of depth to the side characters in a different way. One might argue that different doesn't always equate to good, but in this case, Director Yuasa Masaki handles these scenes so fluidly I can't help but enjoy them and look at the show in awe.

Also, after OP there was another scene where perspective would constantly change every time the ball was hit and the tournament was introduced to the viewer. During that time an upbeat tune was played which consisted of ping pong balls striking the bat, ground and the table at the hands of different players. I personally thought that was another stroke of genius, at least on the part of the music director.

Smile's constant humming during the table tennis match not only showed his self confidence but also created an eerie atmosphere which put China's nervousness on the spotlight compared to the calm and serene nature in smile. Way to bring about contrast between the two characters! I'm really surprised people think that Smile actually lost due to the lack of """"skill""""..... Kinda makes me sad, that people aren't even paying attention while watching the show.

Oh! I also love the slo-mo effects during the matches. Reminds me of Hajime no Ippo where punches would become slo-mo to intensify the atmosphere, and this works here really well too.

Welp, I'm enjoying this show quite a lot for now, and I hope it certainly keeps up with my expectations.

It will probably be the best anime we'll get until July-godlike-ammount-of-great-nihongo-animations-season-premier. This one and Mushishi, of course.

Yeah, Smile definitely geared down after Kong's coach gave that little speech. I think that Smile let Kong win, knowing that the match meant a lot more to Kong than it did to him.

You could definitely see it as soon as the coach started talking to Wenge, it focused on Smile's face. And everyone else knew what was up too, the old lady and his coach mentioned it. All because Gorilla told him about Wenge's position. You could see Wenge was sad after the match.

OT: Did anyone notice the weird guy in the crowd before bald gorilla talked to Smiles? Hat, glasses, mask, the only one who moved. Definitely going to show up later.

Oh definitely, remember that Smile thinks of himself as a hero, a hero doesn't beat the weak. That was what Kazuma's whole speech about how Smile thinks about his opponents was about. Smile proved he could have won, and then turned it off. His opponent's know that he did that (though they don't know why), but the spectators don't understand.

You are not alone. The direction of this show has been perfect from the start. Not just the art, but everything. Loved the humming Smile did during his match, hero theme music time.

-Surprised Smile went to go check on his coach so soon after he gave him a cold blooded beatdown. The old mans chatter during their set really did hit Smile close to home.

-I like how the politics of sports is being portrayed. There is pressure on all of the "good" players in one form or another.

-Likewise I really like how we're treated to a piece of each players psychology. Their approach to the game, what they think of their opponents, and why they play. Even if they might not all get a lot of screen time.

-Loved the scene where Peco hands Smile some water. At first Peco is towering over Smile as he sits on the step, but then he decides to sit on a step below smile. Very nice visual symbology there.

-Fantastic match between China and Smile

Great episode. Can't wait for next week.

This episode was godlike! Such a build-up for the final match... and such a match!!! Everything was just perfect: the script, the conversations, the timing, the art, the music... oh my, I want another episode now...

Really like the gray/coloured manga-like storyboarding for clips that have already played and that have not played yet, because you can already see the face expressions in black-and-white static on the left, and you know that they are the future reactions to something that's only happening in the right part of the screen.

Possibly, maybe it's a girl.

And Wenge can still get better and there's also baldy and his friend. And possibly Peco.

I'll be very disappointed if this match doesn't happen at some point. I doubt Peco is either simply going to ignore what he has seen here and go on his merry way, or too dense to figure out that Smile has been holding back. I'm interested in seeing how this will affect the dynamic of their friendship.
Yeah it's definitely affecting Peco already. He might be who he faces fully seriously for the first time.

I'm not 100% confident but I think it comes from peko-chan which is famous character from fujiya; candy company
later episode peko call himself poko which is also character of fujiya(peko's boyfriend)

girl with red ribon is peko and boy with blue hat is poko

^^^ YES ALL OF THIS!!!! very well said.

im loving this show so much and its only been 3 episodes its such a shame so many people were turned off soley based on the direction, animation, and character designs.

i love smile's personality laid back, calm, cold, brutally honest at times honest, but at heart truly compassionate. it was such an awesome moment when even though he couldn't speak cantonese he knew exactly what the coach was yelling at kong about and threw the game knowing that it meant more to kong than it did to himself. i loved his quote about how he hate people staking their lives on table tennis it's so cool to have a character that's so naturally gifted but only plays out of pure enjoyment and expression rather than competition.

Completely agree except that the episode went from 10/10 to 3/10 for me with him letting Kong win. I know, he mentioned it, its in his character, doesn't want to ruin Kong's life by beating him but... if it is going to be THAT sort of sports anime then I may be out of this one.

I get it, I really do. He just wants to play to have fun. He doesn't want to skunk people and make them walk to the sea, maybe walk INTO the sea with their mouth open... but ... if its going to be 8 more episodes of trying to convince him to play seriously AND WIN then I don't know if I can take it. Expected from the first episode or not...

Yay, finally a real OP! And it was glorious! :D

Damn, that episode was really intense. I had chills at the end.

Smile became a robot. An unbeatable robot, that could overcome everything. But that manager said the word that would break him. ''It's stupid to state your life on ping pong'', Smile have no ambition, but he see people that bet their life on a single match. He may have an insensible apparence, he's exactly the opposite. He can't stay insensible to the outside of his shell.

Props to the creepy song Smile was singing during the match, definitely raise the tone.

Kon will probably know that Smile let him win. He already saw before that he had the habit to let people win. It will surely hurt his pride even more than if he would have lost.

Peko will probably lose to that other guy. If he doesn't take the advantage soon, he'll probably end up in a fall.
