Another great episode. After the strangling an old dog tease from last time I expected this episode to be a lot more dour. It had a lot of great humor in it though. The old man instinctively trying not to lose was a pretty interesting scene. I felt some small tingling in my heart, when he gave his "I don't want to lose" speech and it turned to snorting laughter when he reveals he just wants to keep playing so he doesn't have to help out around the house. Last but not least I'm glad they brought back the shogi cats one last time. My friend and I commented they hadn't done the bishop and King yet but I was unsure if they would.

This show has less and less of a plot direction with every new episode.

What was the point in the history lesson? The retirement thing turned out to be bs as well. Only like 1-2 minutes of the episode could be said to have made any sense

I was initially leaning that way as well. But then I think I got it. The old man, in his crazy ranting and emotional swings, finally managed to break part of Rei's self-imposed limitations. Did you notice? He was not frowning every scene. In some scenes he even smiled. That was a breakthrough! Being willing to associate with and accommodate this old man, added to the friendship of Nakaido and Akiri's family, is allowing Rei to start to live outside himself.

Kyouko just makes me cringe every time she appears on screen. She's such a despicable character. I hope the writer makes sure that she gets exactly what she deserves eventually. Her torment of Rei can't last forever ... at least I hope not!

Matsunaga ... such a funny, adorable, asshole.

for me, this is personally the best episode!
so many funny moments like Kiriyama so concerned about his old opponent.
He has total respect for the old man because of 40 years.
After the win, its total awkwardness but as soon as Kiriyama treated the old man, he realized they would get along a lot!
And very good thing is Kiriyama didn't let that bitch Kyouko dictate/demotivate him and actually old man isn't retiring! as opposed to what Kyouko said.
5/5.

I love Matsunaga-san, he's such a sweet grandpa TT__TT he reminds me my own grandfather who passed away over ten years ago. They even look alike but my grandfather was skinnier.

I am so glad that he's not going to retire. I believe we should have the choice to do things we love until the day we love.

Son took only a few minutes from the narrative, to get an overview of the new opponent of Rei, this goes to show how amazing it is in the set of script and dialogues. Again, the story is based on a balance made of sad moments and almost dramatic, and brackets where smiles and laughter made to hilarious situations and bizarre excuses. Mr. Matsunaga Shouichi is a character, as well as graphics characterization behavioral level, that's fun! The thing that made me happy and satisfied, you know that Kyouko has not got its way on Rei; what was the best moment of the whole narrative, as if we refer to the entire episode, the most comical part is during the shogi game. If we seek the most touching part, I would say that is when they float the feelings of Matsunaga Shouichi when he was facing the end of his playing career. Excellent soundtrack, but the rest is not far behind. The wait was so much concern and to find myself facing a very sad episode was just as high, because of the words of Kyouko, I would say that its purpose has reached this anime, but has also achieved the goal not to make sad and difficult to watch. Yay!

How did this show manage to take such a nosedive? It's become agonising to watch. Stop churning out drab bits of 'comedy' and go for the serious stuff. That's what made the show so strong in its early episodes.

"Such a young, beautiful Grim Reaper."

That elderly shogi player sure was entertaining. Particularly his motivation for playing the game... After 40 years, though, I can't blame him...

A Kitoge-approved episode:

Wow. I'm left with no words. To be honest, the first half of the episode, I was getting disappointed cuz I thought the last episode was hyping this up to be some dark emotional game. Of course we get the deeper picture of what happened during the humorous interactions. Reflecting over the episode, I feel like the humor was huge; the humor was a mask for the confusing bittersweet emotions that Matsunaga had:

- fear of losing
- pain from realizing that he'd lose
- love for shogi
- admiration for Rei
- unwillingness to retire

That really just blew me away. Lol that last scene was so heartwarming. Even through the comedy, one can tell that the old man's real reason of continuing shogi was because of his passion for the game that was rekindled by Rei.

Mr. Matsunaga is such a wild character. haha.
Couldn't help but laugh when he talked about his family, and how he'd be forced to help out. And Rei just standing there telling him, "THESE ARE THINGS YOU SHOULD BE DOING!"
Just funny stuff.

The stupid unfunny manga humor in this anime constantly keeps ruining the show for me, but at least it was tolerable until now. Whatever drama was built up during the scene with Kyouko in the previous episode was completely destroyed and trivialized when the shogi match turned into something out of Gintama or some other comedy manga/anime. At least adapt the humor properly for tv ffs, so that it doesn't feel so jarring.

But when we got that emotional monologue from Matsunaga after the match, and when Rei was going to accompany him to tell his family that he wasn't quitting shogi, I thought the episode had somewhat redeemed itself. Then it had to go and ruin even that by immediately shoving the stupid gag about Matsunaga not wanting to quit because he hates doing chores. Needless to say, this was the worst episode yet for me.

At first I was really relieved when Matsunaga said he wasn't quitting but when I heard his reason... geez, man! Stop being lazy and help your family sometimes, haha. It was great that Rei got to spend the evening with him though, apparently that unagi (eel) shop is based on a real shop near Tsukishima.

Rei's sister is so poisonous though. I guess she's trying to psyche Rei out so he looses... she needs to find her own path in life and let bygones be bygones. I know it's not easy and she probably needs therapy but I don't think she'll ever be satisfied even if Rei looses or quits.

Can't believe Rei actually took Kyouko'ss word at face value.

Matsunaga was built up by Rei to be a venerable veteran shogi player, but instead he was a drunk who didn't want to do chores as his main reason to continue.

Him being so passionate about the little history discussion they had made that scene funny for me. I haven't had a long chuckle for a while.

Although I'm not a fan of the shogi song they put between, it was still a good episode.

Is the cat shogi song going to be in every episode from now on? I could understand if they were trying to teach kids about shogi, but this aired at 23:00, which is more of a teenage/adult viewing timeslot.

Also, if kids were expected to be in the audience, they would've added a "Good boys and girls don't do this" disclaimer to a 17-year-old being dragged around with a drunken 65-year-old man he barely knows.
"No, son, you may not have your body pillow at the dinner table!"

The comedy really hurt this episode. In the previous episode, Rei and Kyoko's interaction built up such tension and the payoff here was severely hurt by the humor. The shogi game felt like a joke and just pissed me off. I understand how the grandpa's drunkenness ties with his outburst at the end because he uses alcohol as escapism but the rest of the comedy was just bad.

This also made Rei and Kyoko's stand-off anticlimactic.

2.5/5. I'm pissed. Every time the show becomes serious and 9/10 level, it just has to pull this shit.

Not a big fan of the comedy but whatever.

Maaan, Kyouko reaaaally improved this series "Oh, you won, huh? Well, I'll go to your flat to screw with your head" Rei's response was amazing.

Kyouko's VA voicing the title card was the coolest of them so far.

Eat shit Kyouko. You tried your hardest to put Rei down, and I'm so glad he was able to overcome her malice. This episode was much funnier than I thought it would be, with some great touching moments thrown in here and there. I'm glad Rei is finding people like Matsunaga and Takahashi that he can relate with. I'm sure it was really eye-opening for Rei to see someone respond to his question exactly as he would have. Matsunaga was hilarious the entire episode. I loved him getting a bad fortune and wanting to continue playing shogi purely to avoid doing house chores. TLDR: Get fucked Kyouko. Rei is best boy. I hope we see more Matsunaga.

Mr matsunaga is a pretty funny guy, the match was amazing

Interesting to see the perspective from someone who wasn't blessed with the same kind of genius as Rei, having played 40 years without anything much to show for, bit sad but glad that he doesn't retire yet....at least he should help out in his household

This episode sucked. Flat out.

And the shogi cat interludes are so out of place now that it's becoming off putting.

Sigh.

Idk if that was supposed to be comedic relief (because nothing in that episode was fun/funny). Idk if that was supposed to have a point. But it feels like the show lost focus. And I thought the show had a general direction, but now I'm not sure it has any direction at all.

I still generally like it (7/10), but it's trending down.

Eh, throwing isn't really a deed of a good guy..
I only don't get the part of finding the king.. Is it same as in chess?.. Or he can't be found at all, like even checks aren't allowed?..
I don't know, but Kyouko feels a bit lame.. I mean, if she wanted to do something bad to Rei, and just decided it to do in giving worries about someone else, who Rei would outplayed.. It is kinda lame.. There are much better ways to hurt person, if it's your goal.. Not like I'd want to see this, really.. But what Kyouko wants at all, really?.. Why she reappeared in Rei's life?..
