I prefer short shoujo mangas to longer ones because the mangaka usually drags longer than it deserves like Kaichou-wa Maid-sama.
Don't read mainstream long shoujo manga? lol Plenty of medium length ones that are conclusive and aren't just arcs after arcs (Kaichou, Special A, Ouran, etc.)

If they've already selected a good-hearted alpha male as a character, then acting in such a way is natural. It is expected from a character with such personality. You can probably see it when you first see that character, it's not cringeworthy on its own when a character acts according to his personality later on. I would actually hate it when someone acts out of their character and being able to predict their actions based on their personality is actually something I enjoy.
If you generalize, you're wrong.

Nope quite contrary, the various tropes and quirks within shoujo are appealing to me. I like the emphasis on romance and it taps into that maiden's heart sensation.

Actually I can't even think of many shoujo titles that utilize what OP has described. It's common for a guy to defend the girl, but I don't usually see physical violence for verbal abuse.

Not really, but from the standpoint of a man when women write male characters (especially for shoujo) sometimes the results are amusing, baffling, or sometimes sexist.

Nope, in fact shoujo is pretty much all I watch any more. I'm just a sucker for a good love story. I'm also not overly feminist, so the girl being weak and needing protection does not really bother me. There are Shoujo with super strong bad ass women though too such as my favorite, Peach Girl, or Nana, or Revolutionary Girl Utena. (Though they all have weak moments.)

I mean as a woman myself, I want to know that it's "okay to be weak" sometimes - I also think men can be weak too - but that when you find your "soul mate" this person accepts your weaknesses. And this person compliments your weaknesses, and you compliment theirs. They have strengths and qualities you envy because you lack; and vice versa for them seeing those strengths in you and realizing their own weaknesses.

Someone you can lay your heart and emotions on, a literal shoulder to cry on. Someone that "gently" pushes you to move forward and helps put things back into perspective when you're off the rails or down in the dumps.

Because, just like a "good friend" that's what a good relationship should also look like.

We're all weak sometimes. And that's OKAY.

Women aren't the "weaker sex"; but depicting "chivalrous" men resonates with what the "majority" of women want in their ideal fantasy mate.

I like the topic of romance, innocence, awkwardness, adolescence, youth, etc. - Yeah it's overdone somewhat, but so is all the onesie twosies me toosies shonen action brawler anime you know?

Different strokes for different folks :D One of the best things about anime is how diverse it is compared to western animation.

What so bad with Ghost Hunt main female lead? I actually like their dynamic better than most shounen and romance themed series. They compliment each strengths and flaws. Its like reverse Gosick.

The only bad thing about Ghost Hunt was they didn't answer the crucial answer; who is the guy that kept showing in Mai'dream.
She's a damsel in distress with no personality. Gosick doesn't have a good main male or female either.
Lol, sure those characters are not strong by all means, but no personality is wrong. The female lead of Ghost Hunt would get mad sometimes, that alone proves that she has feelings.
Gosick's male character, Kujou might be a little bit too centered around Victorique, but he is by no means bad, he's actually pretty good, having his own development episodes (going to army, backstory, always staying by Victorique, supporting her) and Victorique is not a bad female lead by all means, she alone carried the entire show for a lot of people who liked the series. Her back story and how she came to be is pretty good. I would go more into detail but I watched these series a long time ago, can't remember all the details.

@OP
Yes, I cringed at some of the more generic shoujo romance, usually unable to finish the series, but with your said scenario where a male character comes to the rescue of a female protagonist, sometimes I would find it kind of cool, not very often, but it puts a smile on my face sometimes. It's lovely how a guy would do all he could to protect the girl he loves. :3

It really depends for me on the manga. If it was well-written and well executed, then even if the manga has some 'cliche' moments (like love rivals or triangles, or bullies, or typical 'what is this feeling' moments), then I can enjoy the manga. For example, if the characters lack depth, and are too one dimensional, then I can't really enjoy the manga. If a mangaka has no idea how humans are, and that each human has their faults and merits, then it can be impossible for them to write something that is worth your time. There are exceptions, for sure. It also depends on the genre. For example, the SoL ones MUST have characters that are realistic and relatable. It is OK if some cliche plot devices are used, as long as the characters react realisticly enough, or believably, based on their personalities.
I can't say that I am knowledgable about this genre, since my muse is BL, but I will tell you about the ones that I liked them a lot, and I considered few of them as masterpieces.
I can name many nice manga series: Fruits Basket (Masterpiece regardless of whether you like Shoujo or not), Koi Dano Ai Dano, Ouran Highschool Host Club, Tonari No Kaibutsu Kun, Takane To Hana, Kareshi Kanojo No Jijou, Kimi Ni Todoke, etc..
See? A person that doesn't read many shoujo already listed many GOOOOOD titles.

The only one that made me cringe was Ookami Shoujo. That shit was painful to watch.

But in general I love me some shoujo tropes. Nice, confident, helpful, normal guys are just more likable and easier to identify with than a lot of the shounen males who are usually either perverted assholes with the minds of a 3 year old monkey, or pathetic losers, or both.

The males are a big part as to why I prefer watching shoujo/josei romance over male-targeted romance. It's more fun to see an innocent romance between two nice, normal, maybe a bit awkward people develop than seeing some harem protagonist choose between a harem of cum dumpsters with both sides being reduced to their most base traits.

I'm really trying to think right now but I don't remember a single shounen romance that I actually enjoyed for the romance. The only good ones are rom-coms where there basically is no actual romance, it's just used as a setting for hilarious comedy. School Rumble and Seto no Hanayome come to mind. Maybe Bokura wa Minna counts, and I'm probably forgetting some titles sine my list is so big but overall 'shounen' and 'romance' in combination make me very skeptical while shoujo romance is almost always a must watch for me. Even though, admittedly, I've gotten a bit tired of some of the tropes lately. Mainly the random rivals showing up. They're just rarely well executed. The tendency for drama in general can get a bit annoying in some cases but I'd still take a meh shoujo romance over a decent shounen romance.
I probably regret this post by now.

If you ask me directly I'd tell you I really like shoujo per se, but then I stare at the most popular shoujo list in MAL and I come to the painful realization it has a lot of cringe-worthy stuff.

That being said, the same applies to all demographics and genres, hence I can conclude that your hypothesis is definitely false.
People avoiding shoujo is most of the time like people avoiding mecha. They've seen just a couple of those, or even none, and from that limited sample they already extrapolate it over the whole thing.

Not necessarily. It depends on how "Shoujo" it is.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena was a great watch, Kimi ni Todoke was cute, and Kaichou wa Maid-sama was overloaded with Moe goodness.

I'm watching Peach Girl right now. I don't dislike it, but Goddamn that anime is Shoujo as fuck.

I love shoujo... but my best friend hates it and laughs a lot at it. I tend not to be as big of fan of shonen and seinen series as time goes on and my best friend loves those things. However doesn't mean I still don't like an ocassional thing... I have just seen a lot of shonen. Shonen tend to get a ton of exposure over shoujo series. I am more likely to find a shoujo I never heard of that is good than a shonen. Kinda in this adventure phase feeling with Shoujo.

I think we force each other to watch what we normally wouldn't. I think it promotes growth as an anime fan.

Those kind of moments make me cringe and I actually have to pause the anime and mentally prepare for those moments.
