"The City of Howls"

Almost sad how it began...but started to make me feel better.

I am watching the dubs (I can switch to the subs if I want). I like them. Very well done.

"In Freeze City, Tsume and the group of thieves he leads find a white wolf lying under a tree. When they reach for it, it wakes up and kills two of them before Tsume draws it off. Once they are away from the humans, his true form is revealed for a moment: a gray wolf. He and the white wolf argue and end up fighting briefly. The smell of their blood causes Cheza to awaken in the laboratory where she is being studied. Later, the white wolf is shot by Quent Yaiden and stored in a cage at the police station. During his questioning by Detective Hubb Lebowski, Quent claims the "dog" he shot was a wolf, even though they are supposed to have been extinct for 200 years. Hubb has Cher look at it and she asks him to have it brought to her lab. After they leave, a brown wolf named Hige teases him about being caught and caged, but the white wolf says he just wanted a long rest. After they escape the police station, with the white wolf now using human form as well, Hige asks him where he is going. The white replies "Paradise" before introducing himself as Kiba."

Been meaning to watch this series since forever, and after listening to the ending theme I finally got my hands on it. I love the English voice actors, there are so many recognizable voices and the subs are pretty solid so far. The scenes where you get a glimpse of Tsume's Wolf form, as he interacts with other people, such as reaching for Gel as he falls is pretty awesome, and makes me wonder how exactly he was carrying stuff in the first place. XD

Also been meaning to watch this forever ^^ But I wont go near dubs personally, so I wouldn't know really.

@xxxHolic_Waltz lol. Good point! How was he carrying all that stuff? XD

For a first episode, it was pretty amazing really. When I say I've been meaning to watch this, I've been hesitant, something about the concept of wolves who hide themselves as humans just seemed a bit, well, weak to me. The Okami thing has never really done it for me. However I kept thinking, ''you should give this one a try'' because somehow anime creators manage to blow you away with their storytelling every time, sometimes regardless of how sceptical you may be towards the content!

I think the characters are really interesting and their designs are fantastic (especially Hige for me at the moment, I think he's quite an original character and very likable ^^)

The animation and style are just breath-taking and the soundtrack.... O.O ....absolutely amazing, well I suppose, it is Yoko Kanno's genius after all.

I'm very eager to find out more about about Cheza, though all she did was open her eyes, lol, she made a huge impression! XD Hmmm, I wonder what the rest holds in store!

I originally saw this anime on Adult Swim. I liked the dubbing but now I'm rewatching it subbed. The storyline is interesting. Oh! And I did NOT know Yoko Kanno was behind the music, makes sense since it's SO amazing!! xD

Everything I was looking for. Post-apocalyptic world, drama and a bit of sci-fi: besides, Kiba's VA is Miyano Mamoru, couldn't ask for more.

It was a really nice first episode, didn't explained too much about the current world or why even the wolves are supposed to have been extinct for 200 years but the idea of them having human form attracts me a lot. Quite a deep plot as well, im expecting lots of this.

Yeah, the thing I don't understand is why wolves specifically went extinct - there was a little bit of explanation (the destruction of their habitats etc) but if foxes can survive outside of their natural habitat why can't a wolf?

the werewolf references are pretty well done - the 'wolf' in Little Red Riding Hood was originally a tiger as it was a Chinese tale; it was replaced by a wolf because of werewolf trials in europe at the time. It's nice to see a reference to that. I get the feeling this show is going to go in the LRRH direction and I look forward to see how they interpret the story.

I'll be honest, I considered watching this series for a while but never really got around to it; when I learned Yoko Kanno composed it (like with Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, etc...), that in itself got me to watch it.

And it looks very promising already.

This first episode got me hooked, like no other. Honestly I just wanted to watch a new anime and didn't really read the details on the dvd I had rented from my local library and I was like 'whoa, what a crazy concept' after viewing it. Tsume's voice is perfect for him, all rough and trugid and ater watching that series I find the voice acter everywhere now. xD

Like a lot of people I was putting this series off for a while. It has a ridiculously high pedigree, from Yoko Kanno's soundtrack to an all-star dubbing cast to the impressive Bones studio. Just bought the whole thing today for like $30 and started on it.

From the opening, the drained (dying?) wolf in snow echoing a tale of paradise had me interesting, but the point at which I got hooked was different. That kid, who was part of Tsume's group, seemed like the type of character to stick around for a long time. Maybe he would break down Tsume's barriers, make him less aloof. Tsume reaching out to save him, instead clamping down with his claws and sending the kid to an untimely death. awesome stuff

Weird. Wolf's Rain caught my eye mostly because Yoko Kanno did the music for it. What I seem to have gathered from this episode is that wolves can talk, people don't like wolves, some wolves can disguise themselves as people, and I'm not really sure what's going on yet. TBC...

Agreed. I thought the same way about the kid. So, that scene pretty much showed me that all bets are off.

Really solid first episode. It didn't go into a lot of detail or anything but it was just really well put together.

Intriguing first episode. Loving the bgm and the characters seem pretty cool, especially Kiba, what a bishie. I'm excited to learn more about their world and why wolves went "extinct." I remember watching an episode of this on Adult Swim too when I was like 8 or 9, and I thought it was too bloody, lol. I'm glad I remembered it and am deciding to watch it from the beginning ^^

I've been watching subbed a little more exclusively lately, but am a bit curious of how the dub is from the comments I'm reading in here. I might give it a shot.

Good first episode. The opening scene was especially inviting. I thought the pacing was good. This idea of the Wolf pride is something I'm looking forward to seeing more of and how it affects future events and relationships between wolves.

At first I couldn't find the Sub version; started watching an english Dub version and all I could think was that I'd never found such shitty english Dubbing. xP I found a Sub version on another site - much better.

So final thoughts on the first episode of Wolf's Rain. I think it's average - 5/10. The start is too slow, the characters aren't interesting enough - except for Hige and Kiba - to make a watcher really want to come back, and the story isn't developed enough. Very little action.

I'm intrigued and I want to know more, but I still think the first episode could have been developed much more.

I think late late 90's (we're talking like 1998 here...) to around late 2004 are undoubtedly some of my favorite years in terms of anime visuals.
Bebop, Planetes, GitS: Stand Alone Complex, FMA (2003), Champloo, etc.
I just look at stuff like that ^ and think "yeah visually they've got it right".

Mid 90s is a bit more derpy and 2005-2008 starts heading into weird eye/hairstyle proportion territory.
Unless i'm talking right out of my ass here ahaha.

Starting this show again after basically forgetting to watch the rest because of my lazy self. I remember I really liked the first ep and I still do, but something that I noticed and that'll probably never be answered is why was Gel (the kid?) able to see Tsume in his wolf form, then back to human, then when he asked for help he saw his wolf form again which basically resulted in his death?
I mean, I thought the wolves were able to control their forms - otherwise Tsume wouldn't have been living in the city for so long, I guess. Maybe Gel was able to get a glimpse of his true self becaausee...? I can't come up with anything. Maybe it was falling apart because of the Maiden? Maybe it'll be answered later on. Next episode!

Was about to drop the show due to boredom until Hige appears. Kinda dig his chemistry with Kiba. I hope he sticks around.

One part got me curious, Hubb should not have been allergic to human form of Kiba, if he didn't get the itch from Hige, so I wonder if that's the 'not-so-serious' part of the episode.

You're very impatient. It's not going to get action packed in the first episode. All animes have a progressing start. I thought you should have known that. For a developed story, you need to have an introduction to all the characters first otherwise everything is rushed and you barely know the characters at all.

Not sure how to feel about this yet, world seems cool, premise seems interesting but none of the characters really stood out at all in that first episode. I do like how there wasn't a clear main character though and do hope that keeps up although Kiba will probably take over soon enough. Interesting but not enticing first episode.

This series is now being aired by Funimation. I think it started 18 Jan 17 with the first three episodes posted. I don't know how quickly they will release them.

Anyway, I thought the first episode was very good and am looking forward to watching the entire series. It really surprised me when the one human (?) kid got killed (?) during the raid near the end of the episode. My assumption was we would seem him evolve. Maybe he isn't dead, but ep.1 sure makes you think so.

Slowly re-watching this now that I own the Blue-Ray/DVD combo, really glad Funimation rescued one of my favorite all-time series & gave me an affordable way to purchase it. The first episode really holds up too.

I love how Wolf's Rain begins with an internal monologue delivered by our main character, Kiba, about his aspirations of reaching the mythical Paradise. I love essentially everything about this opening minute from the vocal performance (in both tracks), the dialogue, the sweeping orchestral score, and the visual storytelling. How the scene pans over the tracks Kiba has traveled, emphasizing the sheer length of his journey already, hinting towards his drive. All while our white wolf is passing out in the snowy landscape. The zoom out where the barren environment is transformed into a vision of paradise, with sparkling water and lush greenery serves as a great visualization of Kiba’s goal, while contrasting his intended destination with the world he must journey to get there. Not even a full minute into the episode, and we’re already treated to a glimpse of the show’s mission statement, and that visual transition at the end helps inform the post-apocalyptic world our cast inhabits.

But overall the premiere of Wolf’s Rain demonstrates the series capabilities of using the unique premise surrounding the main characters for some neat visual techniques and devastating moments but that’s far from the main take-away. Just about everything in “City of Howls” is an impressive feat. From the brief scene hinting at a possible motivation for Quent’s wolf hatred, alluding to more depth for him than a simple adversarial role. Or just how well the series presents Cheza as a symbol of intrigue. But most importantly, how it was easily able to establish most of the main characters dynamics and personalities effortlessly. A quick line from Hubb detailing the reason he and Cher broke up or the difference between the similar conversations about pride that Kiba has with both Tsume and Hige establish a lot about the relationships of the character and their individual stances as well. Hindsight certainly helps evaluate this episode with a clear frame of reference, but the amount you can gather about these people and the world they live in from one episode alone is impressive.

Most of these last two paragraphs were lifted directly from my own analysis of the episode, which you can locate here if you're so inclined. & no, I'm not going to be bringing this up in ever episode discussion thread, I'm probably done self-promoting until I reach the finale. Regardless, love this series and I'm hoping the rest of the series holds up for me as well as this one does.

After watching the subbed version I decided to check out the dubbed version.
Dubbed kinda fits the show and from what I've heard so far it's really good, apparently it's also known as one of the few good dubbed anime.

Had this anime for a long time in my PTW.
Definitely not disappointed, pulls you into the story real fast.

Wolves being able to disguise as humans, the convo with Kiba and Hige in the cell was good, already think I can kinda see where they're heading with this.

An interesting, albeit bland, start to this series. Apart from the opening heist sequence, the rest was pretty slow - to be expected of an opening episode, of course. At least you know the type of show you're getting into with this opening episode.

Quent has caught my attention. I can't wait to see his backstory.

Maybe it's confusion on my part, but I feel the show didn't properly indicate if the wolves could turn into a human via transformation or if it was a mere illusion. If it is just an illusion, that raises a hell of a lot of questions, tbh. However, I'm leaning towards it being an illusion, mostly due to the fact that their shadows remained as wolves even in human form.

I wonder what makes the wolves so scary that humanity would drive them to extinction?

A child death to start this off. Swell!
