Kekkai Sensen

Supersonic monkeys, vampires, talking fishmen, and all sorts of different supernatural monsters living alongside humans—this has been part of daily life in Hellsalem's Lot, formerly known as New York City, for some time now. When a gateway between Earth and the Beyond opened three years ago, New Yorkers and creatures from the other dimension alike were trapped in an impenetrable bubble and were forced to live together. Libra is a secret organization composed of eccentrics and superhumans, tasked with keeping order in the city and making sure that chaos doesn't spread to the rest of the world.

Pursuing photography as a hobby, Leonardo Watch is living a normal life with his parents and sister. But when he obtains the "All-seeing Eyes of the Gods" at the expense of his sister's eyesight, he goes to Hellsalem's Lot in order to help her by finding answers about the mysterious powers he received. He soon runs into Libra, and when Leo unexpectedly joins their ranks, he gets more than what he bargained for. Kekkai Sensen follows Leo's misadventures in the strangest place on Earth with his equally strange comrades—as the ordinary boy unwittingly sees his life take a turn for the extraordinary.

Kekkai Sensen (also known as Blood Blockade Battlefront) isn't just an anime... it's a vibrant, loud experience that demands to be enjoyed. While many series build to a single, climactic narrative, Kekkai Sensen understands its true strength lies in the moment-to-moment immersion that it offers. This is a show that invites you to breathe the strange, polluted air of Hellsalem's Lot and simply exist within its chaos.

-A World Brimming with Style:
The first thing that grabs you is the sheer aesthetic brilliance of Hellsalem's Lot. This former New York City, now a porous gateway between Earth and the Beyond, is a mesmerizing blend of modern metropolis ... and otherworldly anomaly. The anime leans heavily into steampunk and dieselpunk-like elements, creating a unique visual language. Flying contraptions, grimy alleyways, towering structures of improbable architecture, and characters who look like they stepped out of Lovecraft universe... It all comes together to form a setting that is as much a character as any member of the secret organization, Libra. Every frame is loaded with details, rewarding viewers who pause to appreciate the layered complexity of the background art and the city's inhabitants.

-A Universe of Little Mysteries
While the series may not have a rigid, overarching 'plot' in the traditional sense, it thrives on micro-mysteries and contained stories. Each episode is a new window into the life of Hellsalem's Lot, presenting a bizarre scenario, a menacing threat, or a personal dilemma for one of the Libra members. These 'little stories' are often standalone gems—a high-stakes diner dash, an encounter with a body-snatching entity, or a simple mission gone spectacularly wrong. This structure liberates the anime, allowing it to explore its themes, characters, and world-building without being shackled to a continuous, stressful goal. It’s an anthology of the absurd and the profound.

- The Irresistible Aura of Libra
Perhaps the most crucial element to the show's success is its cast. The main characters, the operatives of Libra, are all immediately likable and unforgettable. They possess a potent "aura" that makes them cool, mysterious, and deeply human all at once.
Leonardo Watch, the meek protagonist with the "Eyes of God," is the perfect lens through which to view this madness. His earnestness and determination ground the fantastical elements.
Klaus von Reinherz, the imposing, gentlemanly leader, exudes a quiet strength and moral center that anchors the group.
Zapp Renfro, the loud, volatile, but fiercely loyal swordsman, provides the necessary comic relief and explosive action.
Their chemistry is electric. Watching them banter, fight, and inevitably save the day is the core pleasure of the series. You don't just root for them; you want to pull up a chair and join the madness.

It'll be such a shame to miss on this gem 💎

Mixed Feelings

A lot of fun (had no idea what was going on)

Pros: Overall, I had a great time watching this show. The series has the great character expressions, aesthetic visuals, and great animation I’ve come to love from Studio Bones. The world — set in a post-supernatural-disaster New York City — is immersive and interesting, well-crafted to show how two very different worlds have begun to coexist, though not without the expected strife and prejudices from both sides. There are some really cool surrealist scenes woven throughout, reminiscent of those in Soul Eater. Though most of the characters aren’t very developed (many are one-note, including the ... main character, and some major players don’t receive a backstory/have their motivations revealed until close to the end), they still have great interactions and play off each other nicely. The comedic gags are often absurd and well-timed, the serious scenes appropriately intense, and the heartfelt character moments tug at your heartstrings. It’s chaotic and silly and the vibes are immaculate. Plus, both the OP and ED are peak.


Cons: I began this show about 6 years ago and dropped it after episode 6 because I had no idea what was happening. More recently, I picked it back up from the beginning, remembering how much I liked the elements listed above, and watched it to the end of its first season. While I enjoyed it all the way through this time, I was also on the edge of my seat, especially during the finale, because I was desperately trying to figure out what was happening and why it made sense for the show to execute in the way it did, based on the pieces I was trying to put together.


One of the major issues with this show is that it can’t decide whether it wants to be a serious supernatural mystery/action series or a slice of life in a supernatural setting. On the one hand, you have a Men In Black-like story, with the main team of characters battling villains and trying to protect the city from the evil creatures that threaten to destroy it, all while a mystery brews. All that is paired with low-stakes character and comedic scenes and stories that have little to no relevance to that main action. In my opinion, these are some of the show’s best moments: three characters go out for lunch on their break, only to find every restaurant inhospitable to humans; the main character (Leo) and a friend sneak out to see a movie; Leo befriends a burger-loving mushroom.


Now, this dichotomy in itself is not a bad thing. The interesting worldbuilding and plot keeps the watcher hooked as mysteries and information are revealed, while the lighter moments add levity and fun. The problems arise when you consider how much time the show devotes to each part. Its non-plot essential elements vastly outweigh the ones that move the main story forward, to the point where what would normally be the A-plot becomes the B-plot in favor of a wrestling match or pizza delivery attempt. With the story this show is trying to build and the conclusion it eventually comes to, the scenes important to that story are sprinkled here and there, often changing to a more serious tone — which is good, since it helps differentiate these scenes from the others — and leaving you with more questions than answers. This especially hinders the “main villains”, who only show up a few times, often just to comment here or there rather than actually do something. They don’t reveal their motivations for what they’re doing beyond a surface level and barely play a role in the final showdown.

So, as much as I love the more episodic, comical elements of this show, I think it could have benefited from cutting some of them down in order to give the A-plot more time in the sun.


TL;DR: If you’re looking for a show with interesting worldbuilding and fun character interactions, this is for you. However, don’t go in expecting a plot.

There is a bit too much *Baccano!* in here for my liking. *Kekkai Sensen* gets overboard with having too much fun in its rustic soulfulness, which though befitting the chaotic milieu of Hellsalem's Lot and for the benefit of creative direction, is too magnified that it forgets it has a story on a grand scale and characters playing different roles to progress it. Speaking of its characters, every one of them rather feel more like proxies for different types of comedic humor (with *straight man* the main filler of the uneventful minutes as always) than organic vessels of unique and entertaining personalities. They can ... be further simplified as try-hard badasses with unexplained sources of combative capabilities of which sprouted skills named in the spirit of a *chuunibyou* done tastelessly, with all the coolness extracted due to how serious it's making itself to be in that avenue. In those 12 episodes, only a really small handful of them was shown to seem relevant to the narrative, with said narrative somehow distilled into the story of the Macbeth twins, and of the said really small handful, none of them come off as characters with enough substance to solicit attention. Each and every one of the cast is a bland Xerox copy of already existing, highly stereotypical, oversaturated anime traits without an imaginative twist to at least make them refreshing to watch for a single cour. Sadly, such a troupe under an episodic anime that hinders the progression of its own plot, worldbuilding, and character development, and whose main character ends the season with one of the cringiest acts I've ever beheld (a feat in and of itself, truly), could really only feel like a drag, could never elicit responses entertainment creators wish to impose.

P.S.: Amagranaf Rozontam Uv Li Neji, or Nej for short, is leagues ahead of the recurring characters in quality. For someone who only appears in a single episode to be considered as such compared to everyone else who keeps on filling up screentime, it tells a lot regarding *Kekkai Sensen*'s abysmal writing.
