THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I read "The Old Man and the Sea" years ago when I was a dumb kid in high school as part of a summer reading assignment. I didn't think much of it then, but HOLY SHIT this episode was a revelation! Poetic, poignant, and relevant to every person who has ever lived, only now has it been made painfully obvious to me what took Hemmingway 10 years to put to pen: to be human is to struggle against all the obstacles life throws at you. Where strength fails you, and when hope seems fleeting, you can still find the courage in your heart to face the challenges before you.

Hemmingway's the star, but the way this episode presented the story, the subtle narration, piecing together tidbits of the tale, constructed in a way applicable to average people with 9-5 jobs, simply brilliant. I still tear up thinking about it.

Yes. That's why Bartender is such a good anime.

For a second, I thought you meant that your friend had to read the Bartender manga for school.

tsk, an overvalued writer, Hemingway.

Anyway, I'm happy for the business man. "A man might disappear, but never lose."

This anime has more style in one episode then most have in entire seasons.

Really good episode, it showed a new side of the 9-5 workers and the hardships they face sometimes... really well done :)

Honestly, It didn't do a whole lot for me. I get the message but, I just didn't enjoy the episode personally.

Old Man and the Sea, I hardly see this book mentioned in media, let alone anime, so it was a pleasant surprise. I might not be able to connect with all the emotions and morals in Bartender, but I recognize that they're there. This show is certainly something special.

He is tending to their hearts.
I'll never think of Bartenders the same way.
Though, I want backstory on him.

I read a manga for school work before and it was glorious. As for this episode, glorious is a word to describe it.

Favourite episode so far. I wasn't familiar with the Hemingway story so was curious right until the end about how it would end and how the guy in the bar was going to deal with his work transfer.

I thought that all the elements in this episode - the character's story, "The Old Man and the Sea", Hemingway's personal story and the drink being served - were seamlessly put together. Although the animation in Bartender remains very simple and not as beautiful as other things that I've seen, I'm constantly surprised at how inventive it is and how effectively it brings to life each story.

An okay episode.

Shibata is way too insecure, and that doormat attitude isn't going to inspire trust and respect from anyone (a lot of Japanese cowardly characters are like that, eg Shiniji Ikari). Anyway, he got his nerve built up okay, and even his boss could respect him.

Using the Hemingway connection to the daiquiri was an interesting real-world idea to use, and works well as a metaphor for not giving up.

This episode was good but I think it's the weakest episode so far imo. Enjoyed the previous four episodes more.

Dumb kid in high school, I know what you mean :) The way you described the episode and its message was very well done. I also thought about how this episode in particular felt very poetic. It is definitely relevant to most people, as I especially understood what it's like to be Shibata. My personality is like that as well, so it felt like Ryuu was telling the story about Hemingway to me. The drink also seems like something I'd like to try...sounds so refreshing.

Not as bad as the previous episodes...but still a major yawn-fest.

I have to finish this series for the 2018 Anime Watching Challenge, other wise I'd drop it.

Very relatable tale here. The framing device is well ingrained and seeing the business guy take his transfer into his own hands as well as his confidence is gratifying. I still think it dragged but I think these stories have so much thought executed into them.

Pretty well done episode, but didn't leave much impact on me.

Not as poignant as previous episodes, but this one is a common annoyance: bullying in whatever form. The bartender gave that bloke the much needed wisdom from Hemingway: that man cannot be defeated.

I do remember getting bored reading 'The Old Man and the Sea' but I got some appreciation for it thanks to this episode.

Ah that poor guy struggling with his job and his boss... I liked how the barman helped him with Hemingway's story.
