The adaptation definitely felt off though. Instead of cutting some less important scenes, it seemed like the anime was trying to overstuff the time it had, resulting in bizarre pacing jumps like seeing a character in a new context for the first time transitioning to an emotional death scene not ten minutes later. I can't say I didn't get a kick out of the melodrama though. I had to switch to the dub five episodes in because I could no longer stand Daru's voice and the actors do a good job selling the scenes. I do wish that 0 ended up being anything other than a very conspicuous midquel. It robs the story of any tension when it's all headed towards a foregone conclusion, and the meandering comes across as just pointless filler. |

Usually when something is like this it's because they are trying to cram more story than they should into a short time frame, but that didn't even seem to be the case here as it didn't really seem to be skipping any story or anything. It was just disjointed and choppy for no reason. I tried making sense of it by at first thinking that they were attempting to mimic the style of a couple Japanese film directors but failing, but even that didn't make sense as the anime went on. I'm not sure what the hell they were thinking. |

The shounen tag really only seems to play a role in the very beginning with the rest playing out more like a shoujo show. It's also somewhat boring with them alternating an interesting episode with a boring one. Near the end it gets pretty wild.
