I'd say romance, because sex can be sexier when there's romance on it.

I love ecchi but if it's paired together with harem it's cancerous.
I would say shoujo ai or gender bender. Or even magical girl.

Comedy.

Definitely not action or anything that is meant to take itself even remotely seriously. And especially not magical girl.

Slice of Life. I don't mind if there is comedy, but a serious plot with ecchi hints is also enjoyable.

Comedy, probably? Definitely not harem, cause I hate harems so no matter what you pair with them, I won't be into it.

Ecchi also works well with romance of course, in titles like Futari Ecchi.

Plus I can see it work in certain kinds of slice of life anime, like Golden Boy or HenSemi.

It can also be okay in action shows like Killing Bites.

I generally like it less the more serious the genre, but in the end it mostly depends on the execution. You can make a bad and cringey ecchi comedy, or a hilarious and clever one and the same thing goes for pairing it with genres like action. It's just a matter of making sure the various genres match each other and don't result in a lot of conflicting tones and the likes. So it can probably be implemented well with almost any genre, it would just have to be done in non stereotypical ways because imo it doesn't work to just take the ecchi tropes of a harem rom-com and insert them into a psychological drama. It needs to be a different kind of ecchi for different genres.

e: I second mahou shoujo as well. Really, probably the only thing that could make me watch traditional mahou shoujo anime.
Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou Ii Desukara was great and while it doesn't have the tag, it probably should cause it was mostly loli fanservice. I mean she just changes into a swimsuit when she transforms xD.
I probably regret this post by now.

Ecchi can work with anything, the only genre that I wouldn't pair it wth is Mystery or shows with dense dialogs.

Comedy and action are great with it.

Action adventure?
I think erotic flavour goes well with adrenalin pumping situations and sporty looking young people doing heroics.

Shoujo Ai.

Ecchi sucks when its the only outstanding part of an anime, it only works as a support genre for me.

PS: I just noticed Cross Ange doesnt has the ecchi tag (?!) otherwise I would have said mecha
"This emotion is mine alone.
It is for Madoka alone." - Homura
or how I would descripe Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica.

The only palatable ecchi I've seen is in the Monogatari series.

Of course there are good ecchi series such as Prison Break,Shimoneta or other series where the ecchi is the steel beam of the entire construction such as Highschool DxD or Highschool of the Dead, etc.

The problem is that ecchi is easily interpreted as perverted or immature, obstructing whatever happens on the screen before or beyond the ecchi, so most story based series will not touch it. Immature only works with immature so that means low-tier comedy for the rest of eternity.Harem only tags along because of the obvious logistic problems with having only one girl could do to a series.

but Monogatari proves how great it works with dense dialogues. Gives you something to look at while you enjoy the dialogue :>

I'd say ecchi kind of works well with more or less anything as long as it's not too dark.
Not really sure about what is the best tho. Maybe romance?

COMEDY

Yes, sorry

But I don't mean it as in just another element, or as in the usual ecchi scenes with just comedic undertone and a plot somewhere. Honestly, most ecchi series goes like that and it doesn't work for me.

What I mean is turning the ecchi into the sole driver of the comedy, by making the situations so utterly ludicrous and absurd you can't help but laugh at it — turning itself into something of a parody. And throw away the plot, you don't need that. EveryMost plots are just an excuse for the ecchi to exist anyway.

I don't consume a lot of ecchi, but the one that made me realise that was this one:

https://myanimelist.net/manga/100274/Nande_Koko_ni_Sensei_ga

A manga, with an anime coming in April, so stay tuned. The ecchi situations each chapter are so absurd and over the top I started reading it solely for the humour. The characters are also oddly captivating as well. I expect the anime to cause quite the uproar in the coming season, for various reasons.

Fair point, but the ecchiness of monogatari it's not the usual one I think, it's more refined? Or something like that hahaha. Ecchi is actually pretty complex and it can be done in a lot of ways hahaha, I assumed the simplier one with this topic but it can be used anywhere if it is well executed I think. So I agree, lol.

Depends on what we're talking about.

There's two definitions of "ecchi" that I've run into -- one is that it's just sexual fanservice in general, like a good lot of it, and the other is that sexual elements (possibly but not necessarily fanservice) are a focus.

There's also two meanings of "best" -- as in getting me personally to watch it, vs. as in what I think it'd most appropriately fit.

I didn't mind the sexual elements of Yosuga no Sora or Cross Ange, because in both those cases, the sexual elements were very much incorporated into the story. Both of those I enjoyed as dramas, basically. So, for "sexual elements are a focus" x "getting me to watch it", I'd say drama.

As for "an ample amount of sexual fanservice, in general" x "getting me to watch it", I find that fanservice basically doesn't really fit well anywhere, unless it's subtle. Like, if it's just panty shots in passing, then that could go anywhere I guess, but if it's "hey look giant bouncy tits" then that basically doesn't go well with anything. I guess I'll volunteer some sort of fantasy/sci-fi action drama thing because it's the kind of stuff I'd want to watch regardless of fanservice anyway. I still wouldn't think the fanservice fits -- particularly in the more emotional scenes -- but, well, I'll put up with some if it gets me other stuff I want.

As for "an ample amount of sexual fanservice, in general" x "what it'd most appropriately fit", then, sorry, stuff like "hey look giant bouncy tits" is pretty much just gags and thus only fits with comedy. It won't get me to watch it though, and I also don't like anime comedy that much, but I guess it'd work out since I wouldn't feel annoyed at the show for being halfway something I wanted to watch and then annoying me the rest of the time...

As for "sexual elements are a focus" and "what it'd most appropriately fit"...well it could be a number of different things, depending on what kind of story you wanna tell using those sexual elements. I favor dramas so I'll just say "drama" again.

There especially needs to be more ecchi series with actual romance, but comedy and action mix well with ecchi too depending on how it’s executed.

I guess ecchi would flourish with romance, as the scenes would be sexier and hotter.

Have you read Darling's manga? Now that's the full potential of ecchi romance mecha.

Not yet, but i plan on doing so eventually.
I've read the manga's ecchi is way stronger and that it's taking the story in a different route.
Hopefully, it'll have a better ending that the anime's.

If the first thing you are looking for is ecchi then go look for something else.
I mean, ecchi is OK but it's not OK to just look for ecchi anime. you'll get loads of crap anime.
