▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Interview #156 - @Skittles ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Slower than Miura

"After a million years, the lord of penguins have graced us with his presence. Seizon Senryaku!"

Interview conducted by: @Scarlett_ryuken
Reviewed by: @neekoneko

Tell me about yourself

I’m Skittles, formerly known as CheekyKunt and CheekyPenguin. I dedicate this piece to my dear interrogator interviewer @Scarlett_ryuken since he's been keeping up with me for these past months. But in all seriousness, he's done a fantastic job in digging me for stuff worth sharing, so I hope you all enjoy the interview!

Growing up in the bustling metropolis of Jakarta, I was an excessively energetic boy who was bursting with life. I was raised by strict but loving parents, and the inseparable bond between my younger brother and I put the Elric siblings to shame. The concept of 'seriousness' didn’t register in my cognition, and because of that, I used to play the stupidest pranks imaginable during my childhood years. I remember giving my English teacher the good ol’ whoopie cushion, finding crickets in the school parking lot to scare my classmates, and launching paper planes from the school rooftop with the intent of hitting someone below (bonus points if it was a teacher; another if it hits their face). This mischievous attitude of mine persisted through high school when I was awarded a shiny trophy inscribed with 'Class Comedian' as a collaborative birthday gift from my classmates. I was practically a hyperactive troll determined to annoy others with the most kek-worthy antics for all eternity, but there were times when I wanted to change and become someone else.

I traveled to the United States and studied in Indiana University after graduating high school. My time there was great...at least starting from the second year. I won't go into detail on what made my freshman life a hot mess, but I'll throw in the three main culprits: awful time management, lack of motivation, and more awful time management. Burdened with poor grades and concerned parents, I thought I was destined to drop out until I met a longtime friend who was in a similar situation—before turning her life around by launching what now became the most successful pudding brand in Indonesia. Inspired by her success story shared over text messages and cups of coffee, I began to look for ways to pull through my college years. I sought advice from my cousins, reconnected with my good ol' gang back in primary school, and even consulted a psychiatrist to discover if I was still mentally competent to graduate. Come sophomore year, I managed to get my life back on track using all the aid I've received. To call the following years a massive leap is an understatement—I managed to maximize my productivity by enrolling in the student newspaper, the varsity swimming team, the Sigma Beta Rho fraternity chapter of my campus, several internships, and very nearly Bernie Sanders' campaign team in Indiana. It goes without saying that my final three years in university were the most pivotal moments of my entire life.

Today, I work as an associate producer for the largest news corporation in my home country. Most people believe that working in the media industry requires exceptional writing skills—but writing is actually the easiest part of my job. While writing bulletin scripts can sometimes be a hassle, it's still more preferable than tinkering with hundreds of studio equipment and learning a gazillion different computer programs. Still, I was able to meet new friends and become a few dollars richer, so at least I have that going for me.

I honestly don't know how to best describe myself since my personality varies depending on the place. I'm a super casual fellow on MAL and act like a total dumbass on Discord, but I can be dead serious when it comes to important work. I'm an extreme perfectionist when it comes to writing, and my standard for the craft can be somewhat high though I absolutely love receiving feedback from terrific writers like @Mirorin and @Kineta. I also have a sky-high drive for things I want to achieve, which enabled me to pass the moderator exam, become a MAL Rewrite and MAL Articles editor, run MAL Interviews, and enroll in my current postgraduate program. On the other hand, I love helping people to an unhealthy degree, and my modus operandi in making friends both on MAL and in real life is by assisting others. I've helped many users with writing reviews, making graphics, and lots of other stuff; I'll keep doing so until who knows when.

That's about it on my backstory. People on Discord often address me as "Kunt", "Fagkunt", "Cheeky", "Shittles", "Penguin", or "Penguinshit", so I think I've been getting along with some fine people on this site.

How did you choose your username?

Most people assume my username comes from my love of the candy... but it doesn't. In fact, I've never even tasted Skittles in my entire life (ewww candy). I actually chose this name since I'm a semi-unironic fan of Tekashi69, both the best and worst rapper I've ever heard in my entire life. Even though his "songs" aren't even fit to be called dog turd, I can't help but envy his energy, spirit, and dedication to his craft. He's like Lil' John's illegitimate son who fell off a rainbow and landed in a bag of crack cocaine. If you've never seen how he looks like, just do a quick Google search and you'll understand his connection to my name. Make sure to mentally prepare yourself if you're sensitive to jump scares.

Could you give us your brief history of your time in MAL?

When I joined MAL in 2009, I used the site exclusively to track my anime and manga journey and discover new titles. I was a longtime lurker of the forums, but I never found the will to post something. Eventually after a few years, I tried to become active there—and landed my job as a small-time shitposter. I still don't exactly know how that happened, but I'm guessing my boredom in freshman year got the better of me. To make my days more lively, I'd open the MAL forums, find a topic that sounds stupid, and either post the dumbest response possible or make fun of someone random. I changed my name to CheekyKunt, and my profile picture became an irritating-looking penguin that I found after googling "rustling jimmies". I was like an unhinged serial killer, but instead of guns or knives, I'd use the "a", "r", and "z" words to attack others.

Eventually, I dove into Forum Games to find new stuff to do. Right off the bat, I noticed that the demographic was really different from that of the more popular boards. People were nicer, there was less trolling, and the atmosphere felt lighter. I had a fun time playing the games, but most importantly, I befriended some of the friendliest users I've ever met. I spent a long time getting to know lots of cool people there before I took a long hiatus from MAL to find work after graduating college. Although the break severed my connection with most of my FG friends, I was luckily able to catch up with a few guys who went on to become my longtime pals in this site.

I joined MAL Rewrite after returning to MAL—and little did I realize it was the best decision I've made since I started using this site. I went in as a writer, but after churning out a crapload of synopses and studying the guidelines, I took and passed the sufficiently difficult test to become an editor. Aside from the writing, becoming a club member has acquainted me with some of the friendliest and most hard-working MAL users I've ever met. MAL Rewrite is—and will always be—my online family.

Another club I was briefly involved in was Metacritic for Anime, a small group of MAL reviewers aiming to create an aggregate score for the site's entries. When my good friend @Taz_ invited me to the club, the group consisted of only five people. Despite its small size, I had fun learning and discussing with others on the fundamentals of writing a great review. To complement my work in MAL Rewrite and strengthen my own reviewing skills, I also volunteered to proofread and edit reviews for a few people. I'm no longer active in the club because of my piling workload, but I do wish everyone there good luck in their future endeavors!

At the same time all this was happening, I also successfully applied to become a MAL moderator. My time in MAL Rewrite and Metacritic for Anime made me realize that I love nothing more than to contribute to this site, so I tried for an official position. Since I had experience in writing and proofreading reviews, I initially applied to become a review moderator. This was around the time I got my first job in real life, so I took advantage of my entry-level workload to optimize my application. All this effort was for naught, however, since the more concrete offer to become a news moderator appeared during the middle of the year. I applied to that instead, and sure enough, I was welcomed to the staff team.

Nowadays, I usually kill time on MAL with my newfound hobby of creating graphics. I couldn't even draw a line in Photoshop at first, but by studying the work of the meisters at Enchanted Pixels, I'm slowly able to create my own stuff to a certain degree. I love creating forum sets and profile pictures, and most of the time I use my own creations. Above all, I love helping people who are interested or just starting out in graphic design. Don't be afraid to ask me for help with Photoshop!

Any users you dislike/like?

There are a lot of people on MAL I've befriended over the years, and I'd like to call them out for making my time in this site enjoyable.

Chum Buckets
Longtime friends and hands down the most entertaining people I've met on MAL.

@code - The quintessential user. From our time trolling a random Discord server with @Malarkey to more serious moments such as discussing writing technicalities, we did a lot of things together that were truly something else. His articulate list tags, laidback attitude, affection for penguins, and creative shitposts are only some of the reasons to like him. What's more, we even share the same life motto: "I only pretend to know what I'm talking about."

@Gridley (a.k.a Loli-Sazanami) - Resident loli lover, JRPG fanatic, and Gundam guru. The user I've talked the longest with on Discord, and the king of debauchery and all things immoral. His MAL interview is the best shitpost I've ever seen on the internet, which I enjoy reading whenever I'm feeling down. Please continue succing my penguin flippers and giving me saucy doujinshi, senpai.

@Malarkey - The most cancerous piece of filth I've ever met on MAL. To this day, I'm still fascinated by how someone so vile can be so entertaining. Likely permabanned for good, but I'll always remember your wicked sense of humor and the fun times we shared.

@Ana - My role model who inspired me to take on the mantle of moderator. Hard-working, determined, and politically incorrect, she has all the necessary values needed to become a vital asset of this site. Let's hope we can finally hunt down this 'Lyle' guy for good.

@neekoneko - The Confucius of MAL. She offered me more pearls of wisdom in our private conversations than all the TED talks I've seen combined. Easily the one user I'd trust on virtually anything.

@Harrymanhunter - Chillest dude in this site. My longest conversation chain on MAL is with him, and we talk about everything that catches our fancy. I wish you success in your newfound career as a wrestling journalist!

@Taz_ - Nana Osaki on MAL, rap aficionado in real life. One of my earliest pals in this site who befriended me when my profile still looked like a spam bot. Very easy-going fellow who's fun to talk with. With such rich taste in music, his favorite artists likely include Lil' Pump, Lil' Xan, and Lil' Windex.

@bmoore07 - Otherwise known as the 'Thinking Piccolo'. I met him through his Hunter x Hunter review, and we've been close friends ever since. We share a lot of interest outside of anime and manga, the most noteworthy being Dynasty Warriors and 90's rap music. Above all, he introduced me to the best anime in history: Kaleido Star.

@acchonburike (a.k.a origamimissile/Oregano) - Guy so random that I'm pretty sure he's an advanced bot or something. I long for the day we hold a conversation like normal human beings, but the dinosaurs will probably come back before that ever happens.

Yuni - Top waifu material. Alice Carroll from Aria was initially destined to be my number one, but then Yuni came along and made me rethink my dreams and sexuality. His beautiful mosaic and profile layout was what sparked my interest in graphic design. Wud yu liek sum nuddles wit dat? or meybi sum dim sum?

MAL Rewrite
I'd like to thank the amazing people of MAL Rewrite for being such terrific friends. Each member played a huge role in improving the anime and manga entries here, so y'all better be grateful to these fellas!

@julyan @yahzee @Ren-chan @Mirorin @Glacialis - The other club coordinators responsible for keeping Rewrite afloat. Their effort to recruit new writers and editors, coordinate with the database moderators, and enforce the club's Discord server can't be thanked enough. The Powerpuff Girls of MAL.

@Shymander @toblyvikku - Them two friendly Aussies. Always nice to have internet pals who only live like six hours away from you by plane. Shy lent me a hand in many of my problems; vikku edited my hentai synopses when no one else wanted to touch them. Such great role models, these two wombats.

@Cito - He's on the same wavelength as me, which automatically makes him rad. Despite his devotion to a shit-tier Persona waifu, he's managed to save his reputation by becoming a fan of White Album 2. Best dad confirmed.

@TheCobraSlayer @Coddlington - My earliest friends when I was a new member of the club. I respect them from the bottom of my heart, so I'll refrain from saying negative things about them here. Please let me know the best time and place where I can criticize you guys.

@Watchin4Plot - His name sounds like he loves ecchi and hentai, but there are none in his favorites. I'm praying that he reaches Challenger in League soon, but that's honestly wishful thinking.

@joe_g7 @AlexPaulLEWZ - Both are entertaining, energetic, and a bag of laughs. They remind me of a balloon pumped with too much helium.

@Impossible - Like a shadow, he supports me from behind the scenes while remaining elusive. A better English instructor than any of my former teachers and professors.

@Manjuu - https://i.imgur.com/FKCphfy.jpg :'(

There are still other MAL Rewrite members I have yet to mention, such as @uberguber @SoftGoat @Daisuki and @LSPI, but let me just say that I love you all the same!

Metacritic for Anime
For heightening my appreciation towards reviews and being wonderful friends, I'd like to credit several members of this club.

@Momoka- - I respect her for establishing this club and its primary goal to create an aggregate scoring system. She also favors traps like Astolfo, which is a massive plus in my book.

@NothingReally - I became his first MAL friend when I greeted him in the Introductions board. One of the most well-spoken users I've met in this site. Whenever I feel like being serious, I always turn to him for productive conversation. Someday, we should make everyone on MAL acknowledge the ultimate greatness that is Kaleido Star.

@Konakana - If MAL was a union for chefs, then this guy is Gordon Ramsay. Bolstering a taste for anime and manga equivalent to a three-Michelin-star dish, he seeks to discuss the sweeter points of the medium while continually refining his own exquisite palate. Despite all this, he holds no arrogance or contempt and is actually one of the chillest guys in this site. Honestly, I don't even know what I'm saying.

@sterl1 - Friendly lad who's always open to discussion. Bonus points for being one of the few people I know on MAL who appreciates the Legend of Heroes series. Estelle best girl.

@PizzaOnPineapple - A new member of the club, but the way he connects with everyone is so natural it feels like he's been there since forever. Pineapples are ewww and pizza makes me feel like an elephant, but I'll have to rethink my opinions just because he's such a kawaii guy.

@CodeBlazeFate - Another new member, but I recognized him from long before—if you haven't read one of his reviews, you're probably living under a rock. His steadfast devotion to Code Geass is as strong as his willpower that was on display when he stumbled upon my MALoween room.

Forum Games
Some old-time friends I was able to reconnect with. Great chaps all of them.

@Tiramisu - The most underrated shitposter on MAL. Instead of being a low-effort troll, he confronts others with such verbose ferocity that I'm convinced he's the disturbed spirit of a murdered poet. Using a juxtaposition of needlessly complex arguments and senseless fallacies, he strikes down even the smartest users without any trace of mercy. Please come back to MAL, I miss our enlightening conversations together ;_;

@VIKINGUBERMENSCH - Loudmouthed and brash, I initially thought he was a disgruntled chap with a permanent roid rage. As I got to know him better, I realized he was just a pure, unbridled force of GAR since the day he was born. Thanks to his blog and sound advice, I was more prepared for my first trip to Japan. Always a fun guy to talk with.

@Otoshi-Ko-Reli - The biggest Souls fan I've ever met. Be it about the lore, technicality, or criticism of the series, he's your guy. Also a fun person to discuss anything with. Oh, and thank you for getting me into the superb Mawaru Penguindrum!

@Animoos - From a part-time troll to the admin of a large Discord server, what a legend. Other than both of us being massive fans of Penguindrum, we have identical taste in weeb games. Tales of Graces f is indeed the best title in the series, so all your opinions are automatically correct.

@TheMariqua - Connoisseur of ultra-niche games. The only person I know on MAL other than me who worships the almighty masterpiece that is Stella Glow. Probably dreams to be a Prinny someday.

Indo gang
Fellow Indonesians and some of the most random people I've ever met. Pilih Jokowi untuk pilpres 2019 okei gais!

@You - If you open any dictionary and locate the term 'shitposting', this guy's name should come up. Responsible for some of the most ludicrous threads in AD that you can't help but crack open to read his outlandish points. Funny perverted guy who's actually super nice once you get to know him. I think many people take him waaay too seriously.

@UpperCat - My boi right here. Not sure if he's a smoker in real life, but his pro-cigarette forum sets and profile pics are permanently engraved in my mind. Great taste in anime and the user responsible for introducing me to Memories.

@karambia - Awesome taste in Asian films, but most importantly, another Patlabor fan! I know the Ladies Database is a dead meme club, but I'm hoping to see you develop it into something else in the near future.

Others
@Maffy - Pancake Ghost is nothing but a fluffy bag of kindness, and I have only respect for Pancake Ghost as a senior moderator. Pancake Ghost is indeed the best review moderator, but the only problem with Pancake Ghost is that she keeps losing to me in Discord fightclubs. Have I mentioned her real identity is Pancake Ghost?

@Kineta - Very understanding with the other staff members, and coordinates the moderator teams with great efficiency. Evidently wants to make MAL a better place. I love the feedback she gives to my writing. A+ boss lady!

@CandyDragoness - One of the best writers on MAL as shown by her stellar reviews and synopses. Has the potential to reach greater heights in this site.

@EcchiKnightDarek - Chill, interesting guy and a fellow fan of slice of life. The day he became an Ariafag was indeed beautiful. I really enjoy reading his semi-aggressive posts in AD.

@Robiiii - The more I talk with him, the more I find myself being fascinated with the marvels of ecchi and hentai. We're both patiently waiting for S3 of Spice and Wolf—which will likely happen far into the future after humanity gets wiped out.

@Mikayrawrrz - Admirable gal whom I befriended in the Introductions board. Currently, she's the reigning champion of MALoween for several years straight. I'll always remember her crushing my game room effortlessly as if it were a puzzle for preschoolers.

@hysterical_ @RedInfinity @Intelos - Nice fellas all around. They know a lot about the stuff they watch, so it's always interesting to hear what they have to say. @RedInfinity is lowkey one of MAL's greatest reviewers. I really, really need to find the time to see Doremi and finish Tsuki ga Kirei someday.

@Scarlett_ryuken - I called you last since I love you the most, no joke, officer! But in all seriousness, it's nice to see you become an interviewer for the club. If you're ever coming back to MAL Rewrite, just inform me and I'll tell @Ana to throw a welcome back party. You can write ten synopses to cover the costs later.

Dislikes
Not sure if I've ever disliked anyone on MAL honestly. I love hardworking people, lazy people, sane people, crazy people, moderators, shitposters, the alt-left, the alt-right, and @code, so I'm not sure where that leaves me.

How did you get into anime/manga?

My first exposure to anime was during preschool when my parents bought me DVDs of the original Digimon and Spirited Away. I wasn't aware of the difference between Eastern and Western animation at the time, so I merely considered them to be enjoyable regular cartoons. The same goes for stuff in local television such as Dragon Ball and Crayon Shinchan—I only cared for their entertainment value.

When cable television was introduced to my household, I happened to come across this channel called Animax. Barring the internet, Animax was historic in Indonesia for being the first source for undubbed anime. Since the stuff airing in Animax were mostly Moe and Slice of Life series that differ from the usual fare shown on local television, I came to believe that most anime were the same recycled ideas. Over time, this prejudice faded away as I became a loyal viewer of the channel. I continued to watch Animax religiously until high school when I switched to the internet as my primary source for anime.

My history with manga is less complicated. During elementary school, my friends and I would often frequent this mall that housed a large popular bookstore. Like most young customers there, we liked to drop by the manga section and read stuff that caught our eye (the books there weren't sealed back then; that changed a few years ago). The earliest manga I've read in this bookstore was the first volume of Rurouni Kenshin, and I went on to read many different series after that. One thing I'll never forget is the fellow customer who introduced me to Pandora Hearts, the best manga I've read until today.

What are your hobbies outside of anime/manga and MAL?

Other than being a weeb, I like to hang out with friends and jog with my closest buddy. On Sundays, I usually go biking with my high school friends because of a weekly event in my city where certain streets prohibit cars for recreational purposes.

If nothing else is going on, I usually just sit back and play video games. I've been a fan of Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) since roughly the same time I started liking anime and manga, and I play just about everything in the genre. For most JRPGs, I usually aim for the Platinum trophy. Some of my favorite JRPG series include Atelier, Tales of, Hyperdimension Neptunia, Persona, and Legend of Heroes. I used to like Final Fantasy before it turned into expired fertilizer.

I listen to all kinds of music, but my most preferred genre is easily hip-hop. I breath, eat, drink, and sleep with rap music ever since I left my mother's womb, and I listen to old-school kings, trap artists, and even the widely hated mumble rappers. Rock and metal are next in my hierarchy, and I admire so many bands that it'll probably take forever to mention them all—Slipknot, AC/DC, Dire Straits, RHCP, System of a Down, the list goes on. I'm also fond of Japanese artists, and I've been a fan of Namie Amuro and Bump of Chicken for as long as I can remember. The only genre I actually dislike is K-pop because is that shit even music like damn son it just doesn't click with me.

What do you think of MAL as a site now that you are admin?

Because I'm still a fairly new moderator, my opinion of MAL hasn't changed since I was a regular user. I still think MAL is a great place to hang out, meet new friends, and discover things to watch and read. The forums can get a bit hostile from time to time, but I think the forum moderators are doing their best to keep them under control.

If I remember correctly, MAL is currently in the process of hiring graphic designers. I hope they put up a team soon because the site could really benefit from having one. The general layout of the site is fine, but I'd like to see the minor aesthetic features like badges get some much needed love.

So yeah, I'll currently give MAL a four...out of ten five.

Why do you always roleplay like a penguin?
from @Gridley

They're cute, innocent, friendly, and can slide with their bellies. They fraternize well with their colony, are brave by nature, and stay active even in the coldest weather.

In other words, what I'm completely not, but always wanted to be.

What's your favorite place to go on MAL and why?
from @Mirorin

My primary hangout spot is the Games, Computers & Tech Support subforum. Video games are one of the things I love discussing with people about, so I usually spend my time on MAL there scouring for interesting topics. It's fun to discover the latest titles people are playing.

I'm also big on graphic design, so I like to kill time in Creative Corner. I love seeing the work of others, giving feedback, and also receiving feedback. My criticisms sometimes make me sound like a know-it-all jerkass, but rest assured that my artistic skills are still below shit. Nowadays, I'm always open to teaching others on how to use Photoshop.

I rarely spend time in clubs, especially since my main group—MAL Rewrite—is mostly active on Discord. I'm an admin for the Indonesian Anime Lovers Club, but I rarely do much there other than admit or decline newcomers. The closest thing I've been doing resembling a club activity is lurking at Casual Discussion 2.0 and Chat Club, both of which are goldmines for interesting conversations.

Do you actually eat skittles? If so, which kind is your favorite?
from @CodeBlazeFate

I actually don't. Whoops, busted. I've never tried them during my four years in Indiana, and it's too late for me now that I'm back in Indonesia since they're not even sold here. But if I have to choose which color I'd try first...none honestly, because candy nauseates me for some reason lol.

Do you enjoy so called "guilty pleasure" anime? You know, ecchi/loli/anything that's controversial?
from @Robiiii

Damn good stuff. You know, I used to stay away from them for the longest time, but after listening to the recommendations of upstanding, moral individuals such as @Gridley , @You , and @Robiiii, I began to develop an interest in them. Nowadays, there's almost nothing I like more now than seeing Onii-chan's 747 crash land into her imouto's crater. I'm actually one of the leading writers for hentai synopses in MAL Rewrite; in fact, the synopses for Euphoria and The Rapeman were some of my finest works for the club (NSFW links don't open if you're religious).

What is your writing process like? What advice would you give to other writers?
from @CandyDragoness

This is an interesting question because my writing process is random. In school, most English instructors would probably tell you to write an outline or plan out before writing something. Unfortunately, this rarely works for me. Whenever I try to create an abstract before starting my draft, the end result will often be worse or different than I expected. Yes, visualizing a clear path for your writing is critical, but not when you'll inevitably stray from it.

So what do I do at first? I just...scratch my head really hard. Like really, really hard until "snow" starts falling out and my scalp becomes warm. Before I start writing anything, I'd always clean my head first in the most literal fashion. I'm not sure why, but providing rough stimulus to my head always gets the ideas circulating throughout my brain.

As soon as the subject is clear, I frantically assault the document with words and terms while using only a small fraction of my focus to string them into barely coherent sentences. Without paying attention to grammar or structure, I draft all my ideas quickly before they become forgotten. The end result is something that even a first grader would laugh at, but it doesn't end there.

Now that I've filled the document to the brim, I basically have a word salad that needs to garnished. To complete the writing, I need to perform the essential process of proofreading. When you proofread, you shouldn't only be tidying your sentences, but also identify words that can be exchanged with stronger synonyms. This will make your writing better, but don't get too carried away or you'll end up being one of those smartypants thesaurus lads instead. Also, remember that proofreading only once is never enough since new mistakes come up every round.

On that note, a personal advice I'd give to writers is to prioritize using simpler words. I know many people like to pepper their writing with "smart" words to make them appear more colorful, but unless it's a poem or a song, most works of writing read better when it can be fully grasped by the general audience. What truly makes a piece of writing great isn't the flashiness of your vocabulary, but the way you convey your ideas. So yes, the structure of your writing is what's most important in my opinion.

What sparked your interest in writing?
from @CandyDragoness

The first time I was truly invested in writing was back in primary school when my class had to do a personal project for the final grade. While my friends came up with cool ideas like making dioramas and writing songs, I was stuck with absolutely nothing. One day while waiting for my parents to pick me up from school, I spotted a friend of mine reading an issue of Captain Underpants. I read it alongside him and highly enjoyed it, so I decided to make a comic for my personal project. I can't remember what title I gave the comic, but it was about a janitor who gained superpowers after an ant-looking kaiju invades the school he works in. My English teacher loved it, and he told me that I had a knack for creative writing. Since then, I've partaken in and won various writing competitions, ranging from short stories and poems to essays and newsletters.

What about anime specifically appealed to you?
from @Taz_

For starters, anime is easy on the eyes. I'm not only talking about newer anime, but also much older stuff like Yu Yu Hakusho. Be it the character designs or backdrop visuals, nearly everything about the medium's aesthetics just rub me the right way. Call me a weeb or whatever, but I can't for the life of me enjoy the look of most Western animation, especially superhero series. South Park is an exception since its crappy artwork is part of the show's humor.

I also like how anime explores lots of different genres. I restricted myself to shounen and seinen series back then, but it didn't take long for me to exit my bubble and try out other stuff. Because of my friends, I started liking slice of life, fantasy, romance, and many other genres. I always keep an open mind on what I watch, and this allows me to meet and chat with a wide range interesting people on MAL.

Finally, anime has given me a reason to test my writing skills, which ties into my editorial roles in MAL Rewrite and MAL Articles and my news moderator position. I've always loved writing throughout my entire life, but my affection for anime took it to a whole new level. Contributing to MAL is probably one of my top hobbies right now, and writing is never a painful task when it's on something you're passionate about.

What go you into hip-hop, and why the fuck do you like Desiigner?
from @Taz_

I actually got into hip-hop because of my dad. During a month-long family vacation in Bali, I was lounging in our hotel room's balcony when he passed me his iPod classic. I randomly shuffled his playlist, and the first song to grace my ears was 'Ghetto Gospel' by Tupac. I was so hooked on the song that I probably replayed it a hundred times that night before I fell asleep. The next day, I searched his playlist for more hip-hop tracks; soon enough, I was enjoying 'I Shot the Sheriff' by Warren G and 'Big Poppa' by Notorious B.I.G. From that point on, I began my journey listening to everything the genre has to offer. What's funny is that my dad isn't even a fan of hip-hop—his playlist was actually ripped from an album containing some of his favorite 90's tracks, and those songs just happened to be there.

As for liking Desiigner, one only needs to look at his Pokemon GO video to understand why I worship this celestial entity as my god. As the first ever human in recorded history to speak cursive and wingdings, Desiigner is an inspirational man who brings nothing but happiness to all. Seriously, how could you hate someone who sacrificed his ability to speak for our greater good? To call him my spirit animal is delusional, since his brain operates in a plane of existence that no mere person could even imagine. Opera, Joe Biden, Hillary, or Trump again for 2020? Not gonna happen when Desiigner still lives.

How small is yo' Indonesian dick?
from @Taz_

It could be bigger, but sadly it keeps shrinking since I ate too much KFC. Daddy always warned me the chemicals in their chicken does no justice to a man's livelihood, but I ignored him anyways.

What is your favorite memory of college?
from @bmoore07

I have many fond memories of college, but the one I'd like to share was during the peak of my reporter internship when I was sent to cover the rallies of Bernie Sanders in Indiana. He had many notable things to say, but what made it worth sharing were the events that transpired in the rallies.

When Bernie was rapidly gaining ground in the 2016 presidential race, he decided to campaign in Indiana to promote his popularity in the region. Because my campus was one of the few blue spots in an otherwise red state, he chose to host his rally in Indiana University. News of his visit spread like wildfire throughout the campus. I was doing a reporter internship and a final video project for one of my classes, so I thought I could kill two birds with one stone. After pleading with my executive producer to give me the chance, I was granted a press pass that would allow me to bring my camera to the rally. I was so hyped for the event that I used my entire week's allowance to buy myself a new suit.

On the day of his visit, I interviewed people attending the rally. I was able to talk with students, teachers, and citizens waiting eagerly in a line that extended for several kilometers. I talked with police officers guarding the scene, staff members organizing the event, and also anti-Bernie protesters. I took a lot of good shots of Bernie with my camera, although my seat placement in the auditorium couldn't be any worse. I loved every moment of it, and I wish I could experience it all again.

After the rally was over, I left the auditorium—to find a brawl happening at the university plaza! Apparently, there was a scuffle between a crowd of Bernie supporters and anti-Bernie protesters. I saw a bunch of empty beer bottles scattered not far off, so I assume there were several intoxicated people mixed into the crowd. The two groups were only pushing and shouldering each other, but within a minute, fist fights erupted and some guys started using their protest signs as assault weapons. I think I even saw someone's teeth flying onto the pavement, but maybe that was just gum.

So did I try to interfere? Lol! Knowing this was a golden opportunity, I revved up my camera and started recording the whole thing. "Goddamn, Skittles my boy! This be your chance to win that Pulitzer Prize and land your dream job in National Geographic! Keep those teeth flying, fellas!" Although the fight lasted for only a minute before the police and secret service intervened, I was able to sneak in plenty of impressive shots.

Clips of the fight became the highlight of my package, and I was able to impress my executive producer and receive a stellar grade for my video project.

What shows would you recommend to newbies of the idol genre?
from @bmoore07

I think you got me mixed up with someone else, probably my waifu @Yuni. I'm not a big fan of the idol genre, but I'd still recommend everyone to watch Love Live! because it's an entertaining show. My favorite idol series is Idolm@ster (half of the reason being Chihaya) but it's not something I'd tell most people to watch because of its slow first half.

Actually, everyone should just watch Perfect Blue since that's honestly the best idol show ever.

Would you consider ever getting a pet penguin?
from @bmoore07

Nah, that would be fucked up. I'm already a cute penguin myself, so getting a pet penguin would be some sick form of self-inflicted slavery.

When will you accept that shiba inu dogs are superior to penguins in every way? What is your least favorite thing about penguins?
from @code

B-but cody, I thought we were eternally destined to be penguin buddies :'(

Shiba inu dogs are super cute, sure, but for them to be more adorable than penguins? Hmmm...nahhh. Do shiba doggos have the ability to fight back killer whales? Checkmate, scumbag dogfag.

My least favorite thing about penguins is that they only live in the Southern Hemisphere—which means people living in the other half of the world will never experience true joy.

How do you think your long list of friends see you as a person?

I'm very nomadic when using this site, so I rarely stay with one group of people for too long (with the exception of MAL Rewrite). Adding the fact that I've changed my username several times already and taken long breaks from the site, I'm pretty sure that 75% of the people in my friend's list don't even remember who I am. However, I love getting to know fresh faces in this site, so I always go out of my way to reach out and make new friends. Since I've mostly had hilarious and fun conversations on MAL, I think most of my friends see me as an approachable person... I hope.

Is there something unasked you would like to talk about?

If you guys ever need help with anything (writing, graphics, reviews, recs) feel free to consult me since I love helping others. I've assisted many users in their projects, and I've also been helped by many awesome people here in return. Don't be afraid to hit me up just because I'm a moderator. I mean, I don't even have access to the holy banhammer. Even if I do, the only person I'd ever consider banning is @Scarlett_ryuken because he tricked me into believing he was a hot chick for the longest time.
Interviewer's comment: I didn't tho =/

Any feedback on the interview format?

Not really, it's all good, mate.

Can you recommend us 3 members who we can choose from to interview next and briefly explain why you would love to read their interviews?

@code - Honestly surprised why the best MAL boi doesn't have an interview yet. Probably got more dirty secrets up his sleeve than the US government.

@Taz_ - Very approachable guy who's friends with a lot of users. MAL needs to be blessed with his god taste in music.

@neekoneko - From her exciting background to her time directing MAL Rewrite, she possesses stories worth sharing. Best candidate for the next moderator interview.

Also, keep bugging @Ana until that lazy ass releases her interview.

End of the interview. Thank you for your time.

Heheh, and those reviews of mine ain't over yet (even though for IRL reasons I had to take a few hiatuses and this current batch of reviews overal had taken double the length I expected).

I'm actually headed to college next year so it's interesting to hear a story about someone who has been through all 4 years and manages to go from not having a good time or a reason to keep going, to someone having the time of his life. Gives me some hope for myself.

Drat. Welp, at least your lack of eating Skittles has been exposed. Shame you don't like candy; I'm almost the complete opposite

Thanks for the shoutout, my man!

Overall, this was easily one of the best interviews I've seen in ages (and that anecdote of your college years was absolute gold).

[Also, I never really heard about this "Tekashi69" guy before so I googled his name and LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. I can really tell where you got your username from (as well as the quality of this mans music) just by looking at him]

@Malarkey - The most cancerous piece of filth I've ever met on MAL. To this day, I'm still fascinated by how someone so vile can be so entertaining. Likely permabanned for good, but I'll always remember your wicked sense of humor and the fun times we shared.

You should try listening to his song 'Gummo' on repeat. I did that when I was doing the news mod app so I could stay awake. More potent than a hundred can of Red Bulls.

This is a great interview. So, you're working on news corporation huh? I guess you are partly responsible for shite quality news lately.

Also, although I doubt that you actually care about this but just for the record, I don't smoke irl. And if you pay a closer scrutiny into my set, you will see that it is actually more about 'No-Smoking campaign' and it is rather anti-cigarettes if anything.

I was practically a hyperactive troll

I would love to have that kind of energy honestly.

If you've never seen how he looks like, just do a quick Google search and you'll understand his connection to my name.

Yeesh, it looks like he made dentures out of candy.

landed my job as a small-time shitposter.

RIP CheekyKunt. Those were the days...

VIKINGUBERMENSCH - Loudmouthed and brash, I initially thought he was a disgruntled chap with a permanent roid rage. As I got to know him better, I realized he was just a pure, unbridled force of GAR since the day he was born. Thanks to his blog and sound advice, I was more prepared for my first trip to Japan. Always a fun guy to talk with.

Aw stop, you're making me blush~
And what gave you the impression i was disgruntled?

because candy nauseates me for some reason

It doesnt nauseate me but i dont like candy either, the exception is chocolate.

>upstanding, moral individuals
>You

Pick one.

As soon as the subject is clear, I frantically assault the document with words and terms while using only a small fraction of my focus to string them into barely coherent sentences. Without paying attention to grammar or structure, I draft all my ideas quickly before they become forgotten.

The problem with me in writing is that im far too obssessed with getting it right the 1st time and that i always 2nd guess myself. I should do what you said, but fucking ingrained inhibitions always stop me.

anime is easy on the eyes

I agree for the most part, its also easy to tell who is who unlike in live-action shows where you're always trying to figure out who is who. Looks at Game of Thrones

So did I try to interfere? Lol! Knowing this was a golden opportunity, I revved up my camera and started recording the whole thing.
