THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Whew, the wait is finally over. I've been hyped for this one since they announced it.

Overall a solid start to the series. I don't want to say it was overly violent, but they surely didn't tone down the Go Nagai-ness for this at all. The modernization was done quite well, same way it was handled in Ping Pong.

My favorite aspect was how cinematic a lot of Yuasa's shots were for this episode. His use of lighting, angles and wide panning shots really gives it a high budget feel overall. I hope the non-TV workload for the production is enough to keep the animation and art above average.

HOLY SHIT ITS HERE

First few minutes is a great way to introduce our main characters through a flashback showing us their traits since an early age. Lmfao Akira is such a crybaby. The character interaction with these characters are so great with a sense of realism even within "out there" dialogue. Ryo's intro was fucking insane as an adult. I am glad we got this much progression in the first episode. WOAH NIPPLES. SEX AND GORE THIS IS DEVIL MAN!!!!

Music, story, direction, visuals everything for a first episode is perfect man!

Yooo what a crazy late Xmas present - holy cow :-D

E: very typical Netflix OP. Really digging the Tatami galaxy like art style + champloo vibes. Wait wtf they're done by the same director :O

plot wasn't really what I was initially expecting, the start is completely different to the OVA.

I loved the style of this and how over the top it was at some scenes in particular the second half.

It was strange but very entertaining at the same time to watch through the episode. I'm also impressed by the music and animation style as it has a very artistic way selling its presentation. As violent as this turned out to be, I did like the overall direction of this.

Nice way to introduce the main characters too. I'm interested about them.

This episode alone is already better than the entirety of the original 1972 anime (which didn't follow the manga) and which I loathed.

If this episode is any indicator the rest is going to be good as well.

It was incredible. Went into this completely blind without any prior knowledge about Devilman and didn't expect the first episode to be this good.

If the quality keeps up, it might very well be AOTY contender.

THIS IS SO GOOD

I'm a little bit disappointed they didn't use this as the opening theme, but this is still the best anime of the year already.

Thank you Yuasa.

First things first: the prologue scene is the worst possible version of it we got ntil now. It isn't worthy to be compared to the first (coloured) chapter of the manga or the long mute scene of the Tanjô-hen OAV. Better to show nothing than that.

The drawing style actually worked in a great way to depict the grotesque scenes, but not with actual human drawings (or bean plants?), where it sometimes even succeed at making Nagai's pages look good. How can you skip drawing characters faces at such a short distance in those days?
As I thought, the heavily redesigned characters (not "Devilman") all lost any likeness to their true self (like it was a live show with real actors), apart maybe from inhabited Akira.
The "big" moments got nice scenes.

While some changes could be needed over the course of the story (example: the weirdly placed disco in the manga), others seem unnecessary (the professor being another foreigner) or weird (Ryô being a researcher himself, Mr. Asuka's existence erased). What's the purpose of fully reengineered Miki? Wasn't a martial artist good enough for today's standard?

3/5 That was very fast. 1st tome in a single eps?y fast. 1st tome in a single eps?

First episode and already miles better than the manga. Had me grinning like an idiot from beginning to end because of Yuasa's marvelous, yet confusing, sense of style. There's so many things this first episode did better than the manga. We get a glimpse of Akira and Ryo's childhood, establishing their characters better. This prevents Ryo from feeling an "out-of-nowhere" character as he was in the manga. Now I know why they call this adaptation "Crybaby". They portrayed Akira as a gullible crybaby, which overall makes him accepting Ryo's offer much more believable, more than it was in the manga. Miki's much more interesting too. The manga literally starts with her being sexually abused, but in this adaptation, they made her a famous person for her athletic skills and portrayed her as a stronger character. The info-dumping works much better in this anime. Since we get to see Ryo first experience devils by himself, his proposal makes all the more sense, something that the manga failed. That rave party was more extreme than the manga, but because of the stylistic approach, it works much better. The modern take on the character designs work well too. I don't expect old-school Ryo and Miki character designs when the anime's supposed to take place in modern era. Transformation scene was done well too.

5/5, better than the manga.

Wasn't huge on the changes to Ryou's character (both design and the backstory), but I do think it might make some later moments work a little better. I also found the new artstyle to not work great for the demons, but towards the end of the episode it started to get a lot better and I feel that later moments in the series will benefit from this style. It was also good that the Sabbath didn't take place in Ryou's basement. Wasn't huge on the episode, but the decent start and well done end give me hope for the rest of the series. Also good to see that it isn't shying aware from violence and nudity present within the original.

tbh it's not even on the edge any more, literally just soaring off into the abyss with the winds howling in techno-pop. I'm loving the changes from the manga, it's a refreshing take on a classic series, playing with but still honouring all its cliches.

7/10 could have hammed it up more.

He was voiced by a Russian guy (: In Ping Pong the Chinese/German were both voiced by native speakers too, Yuasa pays great attention to these little details as a director.

Binge watched all the 10 episodes. Got to say was satisfied. I haven't watched the original 39 episode anime series but did see the OVA's. I love both the OVA series and this new series. Both, have it's pro's and cons. And, they were things I liked and disliked in both of them. Although, I wished in this new series they had Akira fight and struggle internally with Amon like in the Amon the Apocalypse of devilman OVA. Nonetheless, was satisfied with this adaptation also.

I liked the first episode but the art style is ugly as fuck.

I think it works pretty well when the characters are demons, but if there are humans on the scene they looks silly and deformed.

PD: Nice visuals on the opening, but horrible music

why they can't do an opening theme like this?

Wow, a lot happened in this episode... Where to start?

Okay, so, as children, Akira and Ryou had seemingly diametric personalities: Akira was the pessimist who was quick to cry, and Ryou was the nihilist. Flash forward 10 years later, and we see Akira on the high school track team; he's lagging behind Miki, the school track star and model, who's also his roommate—apparently. Later in the day, she's cornered by a group of rappers??, and Akira rides in on a boat to save her. At this moment his childhood friend, Ryou, leaps in with a machine gun, and whisks Akira away in a car that he's not licensed to drive.

On their trip, Ryou gives a lengthy explanation about devil possessed people before heading to the most debaucherous club I've ever seen. Hell on top of hell breaks lose, and it's glorious.

This should've been a mess, but Yuasa somehow found a way to make it coherent. And I loved the OP. The morphing rorschach tests over the pulsating trance beat was cool.

Strong start: 5/5

The directing definitely saved the first episode. It could've been too edgy or too over the top, but it's just right.

Some human character designs on the party scenes were definitely over the top at times, but I think they're deliberate to make the scenes more intense. Still not to my liking, but I understand why the staff did it.
