For me the yandere and cheerful images don't pop up.
So you're saying Azu-nyan is the cutest character. That is not the worst answer. Second best.
I believe there needs to a certain balance with cute traits. Large eye are cute until we reach the meme from Clannad. Tsunderes are cute when they switch to -dere mode and not the violent tsun- part.

That depends on the character a lot, there is no one definite answer.

The most common thing I belive are characters that are caring and are imuotos, like mikan from To Love Ru.

Misaka Mikoto caters to a lot of what I find cute in an anime girl.

Big eyes and a dot with a shadow for a nose are pretty standard for cute anime. She has a great hairstyle. How strong she is and how powerful she represents herself contrasts really well with how childish she actually is. She's a type of tsundere, but an interesting one which I find really cute. Hinamori Amu is a similar character who I also like.

For me, its usually the happy/cheerful personality (but not a ditzy airhead), typically with the longer hairstyle, and the large (about a foot lower than the eyes).
Cat ears would be a bonus but not mandatory.

There are, and will probably always be exceptions to this, but it serves as a good generic description that would be accurate a majority of the time.
You're never too old to watch anime.
If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead.

I wake up with coffee & anime, I go to sleep with coffee & anime.

Sorry if my sarcasm is bad, it's not my first language.

Cute:
Pretty round slightly big eyes (not too big though)
Pretty hair
Nice and a bit shy personality

Not cute:
Ruining their looks with their abusive tsundere nature
Attaching some word at the end of every sentence (like nyan)
Small but powerful
Delusional in a not so funny way
Narcissistic

I find animals cuter in real life but most animals in anime specially made up ones are not cute at all, they just tend to look like moving stuffed toys and have a very annoying tone if they can speak. The ones from Fairy Tail were the worst. There are exceptions though, I liked Mikage (the tiny pink dragon) from 07-ghosts.

Just the fact of being a loli makes her cute for me lol

Besides that, 8/10 of the ones you mentioned are things I (or most of us) look out for in an anime girl, not all together, can be one aspect.

Azusa is adorable but I still prefer Yui. I guess I find the timid ones cute like Madoka or tsunderes like Taiga when they show their cute side.

Big eyes are a big deal, but in general it's a look of vulnerability that awakens the fatherly instincts.

Yoshino is the ultimate for me. Look how vulnerable she looks. Her colors are warm and soft. Her hair is soft and wavy and she has a big suit to protect her. The best way to react to it is to want to protect her.

Looks don't matter to me, but personalities... Let's see:
-Tomboyish, teasing, cheerful (like Kanbaru Suruga)
OR
-Super calm, slightly shy (like Urabe Mikoto)
OR
-A little Yan- and a lot of -Dere (like Yuno Gasai)

If one of them existed in a show, it's already one of my favorites.

That depends mostly on the personality, but I do prefer if she has short hair, like my Douji :3

I like characters that are cheerful and kind, with a vulnerable side to them that makes you want to protect them from the world.

For me at least...

A sense of emotional vulnerability that one can relate to on a deeper level than just tears or anger that maybe even the character themselves might not be fully aware of.
I think that often leads to cute characters.
So I guess it's personality, but it's a lot deeper than just a trope (like the OP kinda describes).

When it comes to looks which are cute, I sometimes am not super sure about what I consider cute either. It all differs from character to character. There are certain designs which are cute, but it really depends on the artist. Big eyes might look cute with one artist but creepy with another.

Kind of hard question to answer but for me, personality is one thing and maybe appearance too. I honestly don't have a solid standard on "cute" because some characters that I personally find cute do differ from each other personality and appearance wise. But I like a character that is adorable in looks, personality and maybe a little badass too.

I don't think it's just one of these things. Every aspect of the characters appearance mixes with their personality to create an image of cuteness. I think the cutest anime girl personally is Tamako from Tamako Market, because of how her endearing and lovable personality plays into aspects of her design, such as how her adorable pig-tails jump when she gets excited, or how her wide variety of facial expressions and hand gestures are as adorable as her personality is endearing.

It's normally a combination of design + personality. That, of course, varies depending of the character.

it's a case by case basis I guess, can find loud and vulgar cute as much as i find quiet and bookish cute, although i tend to lean towards aggressive/crazy

Although I hardly ever find cowtits attractive, DFC is best chest

and between loli and normal pettan i prefer loli, but i'm loving of all flat chests and am very flexible in this regard

There are things that definitively look "cute" to people. Large eyes on the properly proportioned head look cute. Chibi is designed to be cute. But beyond appearance, there's behavior. It doesn't need a cute design, though that helps; it takes the character itself and brings it to *squeee* levels of adorable. Sometimes it's their facial expressions, sometimes the way they move. They might say something unexpectedly funny in the naiveté of youth, or so show such pure unfiltered emotion that one can't help feeling the moeru.

In my case? I'm not just gonna be a sucker for cute-looking things -- those saturate anime. No, you gotta earn my "aww." For me, the only noteworthy cuteness tends to come in moments. Also, animals are good at being cute.

One character that surprised me by being cute, and thereby left the strongest lasting impression on me, was Yin.

I guess the personality. Often times I find the shy-type cute; especially when I see them trying their best to step out of their comfort zone step by step (say like Yukiho and Naru for example).

Visually all the things that make a character design cute (big eyes with a large gap in betvween, puffy cheeks, small noses etc) and short hair.
Personality-wise I like either goofball type characters or shy ones. Ritsu and Mio are the perfect duo cause of this reason tbh

I am more interested in what makes a male character "cute" to female viewers. Unlike female characters that the majority of the reasons of why they are cute are quite logical (to me at least) and can be listed.
