I do enjoy them, my favorite being the mix of 3D environment with 2D sprites of the decade, as seen in games such as Breath of Fire 3 and 4, Grandia, Xenogears, etc.
I assume you're mostly referring to "early 3D with a fuckton of Z-fighting", which I still find nice, but not as nice as the former.
You're correct that I wasn't around for it, but I met people who were, and you can still read discussions, blogs and videos from that time.
The fuckton of 2008 reviews for lesser known anime here on MAL? From people who either watched the DVD or torrented it back in the 2000's.
Anime avatars and signatures? 2000's anime internet culture, I was there.
There's the whole thing about anime blogs at the time that somewhat formed a certain "canon" and "what is considered good" (Read: Was the anime community smarter in the past?)
There's the fact that I was heavily influenced by videos from people who WERE active back then.

My first years in the community still put me in contact with a lot of "remnants" of all that. I always like to use this as an example: https://web.archive.org/web/20070209041114/http://www.moetron.com/2007/01/31/nanoha-strikers-slated-for-26-episodes/#more-660
So it's just like I've told you, /a/ is really the closest thing to that: An honest and knowledgeable discussion for people who like anime.
No "hype culture", no "layers of irony", no "r/animemes" Gigguk-slop, no "Aura-farming".
This is the thread I was referring to: https://desuarchive.org/a/thread/277289461
