Ghibli is a studio that's known for consistently making well praised films but it's inevitable that they will screw up at least once. So, what do you believe to be their greatest mistake? For me, I can't answer this question because I've literally seen only 2 Ghibli films.

I'll be honest—I didn't really care for When Marnie Was There.
Kinda felt like it was a bit longer than necessary and tried a bit too hard to pretend its' plot twist wasn't super obvious.

I've seen almost all of them (except Goro Miyazaki's tales from earthsea and that jc staff collab one) and I don't like Ghibli AT ALL. Easily one of my least favorite studios and I dislike the very large majority of all their movies but undoubtedly, Aya to majo is the worst.

Aka the worst anime and movie ever created. I would give it a 0/10 if I could

My lowest-rated Ghibli film is Ponyo.

It's just so much nothing. It bores me to tears.

...But Tales From Earthsea is probably worse, not gonna lie. I bailed after only, like, 15 minutes.

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

I can't say anything other than Tales from Earthsea. When I ranked the Ghibli films that I'd seen, even the second to lowest Ghibli film on my list was one I still enjoyed (Castle in the Sky), Tales from Earthsea is the only Ghibli film I've watched that I just did not like at all.

I feel kind of bad saying it because it was Hayao's son's director debut (also because Hayao was kind of a cunt about it). I don't remember which movie he directed after but I remember finding out a modern Ghibli movie was directed by him and was actually well liked, so hopefully that was just an issue with his lack of experience.

I'm sure Aya to Majo is worse seeing as it's basically half the answers in this thread, but I haven't seen it yet.

I haven't watched that many Ghibli movies. But from their movies I have watched, I can tell that I'm not a fan of their works because of the story or the characters. I still need to watch more though. The worst Ghibli movie for me I think between Princess Mononoke or Grave of fireflies. I rated them quite low.

I would say Gedo Senki but I had to rewatch that. Just saw a little bit of the movie some years ago in TV.

I've been told it's "the saddest" but it's pointless and not half as touching as people make it out to be.

I've watched most Ghibli films save for a handful of them and I'll have to say that The Wind Rises was the film that I took the least enjoyment out of despite the fairly interesting concept. Hideaki Anno's voicework in that movie made it all the more "eh" for me.

Wouldn't even bother watching Earwig and the Witch by Goro Miyazaki lmao

It has to be Tales of Earthsea but I’ll give it a pass since the director wasn’t Hayao himself but in fact his son!

Earthsea is terrible and I haven't even read the book so imagine the book people were even more disappointed although apparently my favorite ghibli film (howl's moving castle) is also a "terrible" adaptation.

I find Ghibli or at very least Miyazaki Hayao's catalog in general pretty middling, at least from what I've seen so far though I do have a better opinion of Takahata Isao's work as I think Hotaru no Haka is pretty decent and I like Kaguya-hime no Monogatari quite a bit. If I had to pick my least favorite from what I've seen, though, it'd be Mononoke Hime. I find it somewhat pretentious and uninteresting in the implementation of its environmentalist themes, and I find both the characters and narrative to be bland and boring. It is visually competent, however.

I've seen only one, Sen to chihiro no kamikakushi, so I can't judge. I don't even care about this particular studio coz if all the other movies have the same kind of plot and story from what I've seen in spirited away, then these all are just kids' movies, nothing else.

I've watched all 21 official Ghibli feature length films. And the loser is:
https://myanimelist.net/anime/1829/Ged_Senki

Runner ups:
https://myanimelist.net/anime/597/Neko_no_Ongaeshi
https://myanimelist.net/anime/415/Tonari_no_Yamada-kun
https://myanimelist.net/anime/42143/Aya_to_Majo

Of those movies which usually are considered "good Ghibli", the one I like least is
https://myanimelist.net/anime/21557/Omoide_no_Marnie
because it feels like a UK teenager novel story, not like Japanese Ghibli at all.

If not counting the recently made works, it's Grave of Fireflies. Characters are unattractive, annoying and unreasonable.
A guy literally lets his sister die and dies himself just because he didn't want to work or do anything to help the situation. Just slacking till you starve to death yeah.

I get that this is opinion-based and many people have only seen their big films but the amount of people responding Ponyo or Howl...... gotta watch more, guys.

Anyway, I think it's Tales of Earthsea. I fell asleep within the first 30 minutes or so and seems like everyone who did make it through didn't like it. Interested to watch Earwig and some of the other less famous ones (My Neighbors The Yamadas, Pom Poko) to see if they'll take that spot

TALES FROM EARTHSEA

An overly stoic, pretentious, boring, unimaginative trainwreck that just happens to have been made by some of the greatest animators in the history of Japanese anime.

I have watched almost all of Ghibli films. If I have to pick the worst one it would be The tales from earthsea. This movie don't have anything to hooked you the character story everything is average and bland. Only the animation and the music makes it worth watching. The movie is very dumb there is lots of stupid moments you will gonna find in this movie.

The only part of Tales From Earthsea I remotely enjoyed was the fact that (I believe) one of the random henchmen side characters had the same voice actor as the Shredder from Ninja Turtles in the English dub. That movie is dreadful and probably the only reason that movie is even remembered is because it's a nicely animated movie by Ghibli.

Haven't seen the new Earwig one yet but that one seems like another horrible pos by our hero Gorou.
