Ged Senki

Calamities are plaguing the land of Earthsea and dragons have been seen fighting above the clouds—something which has never happened before. Sparrowhawk, a powerful Archmage, sets out to uncover the mystery behind these concerning events and meets Prince Arren along the way. Arren is the fugitive heir to the Kingdom of Enlad and a seemingly quiet and distressed lad. Wandering aimlessly in an attempt to escape the dark presence haunting him, he decides to tag along Sparrowhawk on his journey.

However, their arrival in the seaside settlement of Hort Town is met with unexpected trouble—Lord Cob, a powerful evil wizard obsessed with eternal life, stands in their way. Forced to confront him, the pair joins forces with Tenar—an old friend of Sparrowhawk—and Therru, the ill-fated orphan girl she took in. But the enemy's cunning hobby of manipulating emotions may just prove to be catastrophic for the young prince.

Set in a magical world, Ged Senki goes beyond the classical battle between the forces of good and evil, as it explores the inner battles of the heart.

This movie does a great job of feeling like just a small part of a much larger fantasy epic. Not many of Stuido Ghlibli's films go for a full high-fantasy feel. Most of them are at least grounded in reality in that they take place in a post-war Japan. The few ones that take place in a completely different world stand out as special because of the sheer imagination on display. It really does feel like an entirely new world has been created here and we get just a peak into it.

The magic system is always a huge part of what makes a good fantasy ... setting. They seem to have used a soft magic system where the inner mechanics are not fully delved into, and what we as an audience know is possible with that magic is only what's shown to us. I like this approach when it's important to the story to make the magic feel more mysterious and powerful. If you don't know exactly what this kind of magic can do you're kept guessing as to exactly how powerful these wizards are, and it can make them seem more imposing than perhaps they really are.

The part where Arren draws his magic sword honestly felt like he was Luke Skywalker coming into the battle with his lightsaber, it was pretty badass. And we got a happy ending, which is always nice to see in what is essentially a kids movie. I had a fun time watching it and I think it deserves a nice 8/10 dragons.

Mixed Feelings

I knew beforehand that the general sentiment regarding this anime was luke-warm at best, but I needed an anime to watch that suited both me and my wifes tastes (so hardcore action animes were out of the question), and this one seemed like a good fit.

It started out pretty well. Since it's a Ghibli-film it's obviously very well drawn and animated, and it set up a pretty interesting set of mysteries and worldbuilding early on. I liked the general set-up of a wandering wizard taking a boy with a strange and tragic past along for an interesting adventure, and the film kept this up ... for the first 30 or so minutes. The city they arrive in was vibrant and felt engaging, but after that they arrived at a farm and the story just stopped for a good while, and when it picked up again it never really delivered on what was promised at the start.

(There's very mild spoilers ahead, nothing that warrants a tag, but still, I will vaguely mention some story beats and characters in the film)

The world suddenly started to feel very, very small. There's like ten or so acting characters in the entire film, not counting background extras (who all pretty much disappear after they leave the city at the start anyway). The evil wizard who's the main antagonist of the movie has a vast and powerful army of... three guys (who are completely incompetent). The leader of these three evil henchmen feels like he walked straight out of Porco Rosso, which doesn't fit the tone of the film at all (except for when he's threatening to rape children, like he does at the introduction of his character). There's also wild swings in the story that come out of literally nowhere and just massively change where things are headed. I think these were meant to be epic "woah!"-moments, but they just felt hollow since there was zero setup for them. The story overall just feels trite and empty, there's no weight to it at all.

Overall, a very "meh" film. Beautifully animated and drawn, but I feel nothing at all for the characters and the story. Can't really recommend it I'm afraid, but I don't hate it either. I'm sure some people will enjoy it more than me though, so I can't really say "this is crap" and recommend that people don't watch it either.

Not Recommended

It was the worst anime I've ever seen, and I watched Bible Black (also not recommended for many reasons, even if you're just horny). At least in BB the creators knew what they wanted to do. Otherwise there was no plan or idea for this movie other than what they already had from the book.
Character sucks, story sucks, character's designs most of them sucks, main villain sucks. At least the backgrounds where nice but it's only good things in this movie. Atmosphere sucks. I love fantasy and they ruined it.
I do not recommend, even if you had to choose between watching it or watching ... the paint dry on the wall
