Is 4k for Psycho Pass considered a failure? Considering the first series' sales...maybe.
Man I sure dislike the second season.
Ghibli aside, I don't care for any of those titles and I'd never ever pay 80 bucks to see 3 episodes of some moe/pretty boyz show.
Japanese buyers be cray cray

You realize the show has basically been running pretty much uninterrupted for decades (save for a one month blip back in 2005 when the original core staff cast finally decided to call it a career) and currently has more episodes than stuff like the Simpsons to it's name. At this point all you really need to know about is that this boy scientist from the future sent a robot cat named Doraemon with 1,000's of wacky gadgets it can pull from it's pocket back in time to improve the life and standing of his great great grandfather or something like that and hijinks ensue as Doraemon continually gets side tracked from this goal for literal IRL decades. If that sounds like your fancy than go for it.
That sounds like a pretty dumb series. Atleast how you describe it.
Well it's a series that started in the very early 1970's aimed at very young Japanese children as it's target audience which used to be the only audience anime producers even considered targeting for a second until stuff like Yamato and Gundam came along and forced producers to reconsider the business model they had been so assured of as the only feasible one and that there might indeed be room for expanding anime/manga's demographic appeals to account for young adults. It's also one of the best selling and well recognized franchises and brand name worldwide to ever come out of Japan.
Anyway of course it's going to sound kind of dumb to a 19-20 year old person living in Germany, it was never intended for said demographic.

All of those ultra super long runners like Sazae-san, Anpanman, and Doraemon can be picked up for the most part without watching the earlier episodes. So if you want to watch the others just go for it.

AKG sales are depressing.
Good! The manga is way better anyways.
So um does anyone know how well Akatsuki no Yona will sell seeing how much the 2nd opening is selling is scaring me. Are there predictions or estimates out for it yet?
Feb 24, 2015 11:02 AM by Roloko
Plenty of 5k-6k~ sellers ranked better than Drrr in release weeks, these bumps are normal.
S1 sold 18k on average. (29.7k for v1, 14.9k for v13)
I suppose that much is true reexamining the timeline of it. I still expect it though in any case. If I'm wrong and it's lower than so be it, it'd certainly be an unexpected change of pace. I mean I never would have thought in a million years that a show like Shirobako with almost no fanservice, no fujoshi angle and really just kind of so far off the beaten path in terms of subject matter with a publisher like Warner Bros on the label would ever evolve into a 10K title in a Fall season so clearly there's still room for surprises and Japan's mind is at least a little more open than I gave it credit for a few months ago. Granted the new packaging for Shirobako also comes with a ton of swag so that might have something to do with it as well.

Free v6 doing decently at 10k.
Psycho-pass 2 v3 at 4k, seems like Japanese aren't buying to the new season (lol).
LL still got a bit more than 1k sale in how many weeks now? 70k for v7 is around the corner
#Niconiconi
Akame ga Kill doing at around 1.6k for DVD BD combined. Seems about right. Japanese still has some taste after all.
All that is to do is to hope that DRRR get at least a 6k sale average.

Currently thinking something like 6.2K for Durarara and 8.3K for Shigatsu volume 1 on account of the event ticket. While I'm at it I'm going to predict Saenai Heroine which is also an Aniplex published title at roughly 6.2K for Vol 1 as well for the week after.
Feb 24, 2015 8:49 AM by PeacingOut
Feb 24, 2015 8:28 AM by Agafin
Yeah well it feels like I've been making the same comments for a while too. Oh this Aniplex show sold at least 7K as expected. Oh what are you people so happy about with this? For me it's like I just don't really understand the rush some people get off of seeing certain numbers because very rarely does anything interesting happen and IMO it has so little to do with the shows themselves. The only really interesting thing to happen sales wise of late was Shirobako somehow exploding into this 10K hit seemingly out of nowhere. Since that happened I've realized they've changed the packaging but that can't be all of it. Then again it's not like all that much has changed in terms of how that show goes about it's business so it's almost like people are just suddenly paying attention maybe.
Anyway as a result of the anime fandom in Japan just being so deadlocked on certain types of shows (ones with heavy fujoshi, moe or historical influences) and especially lately certain publishers (Aniplex, Pony Canyon immediately come to mind as routine) when it comes to what will sell there's almost nothing to comment on most weeks other than that factor. What gets me is how so many people still haven't noticed this trend and think it's all the shows themselves carrying it and getting all happy about it. Every so often you get a trend buster like a Shirobako or maybe a Bandai Visual or Toho title catches on and does better, but not particularly often.
ppl are really upset that their fav anime doesnt sell well
well im glad MY fav anime are selling well lol
No, actually read what people are saying people. The person clearly said that he feels he has little to comment on most weeks because the results are for the most part kind of typical the vast majority of the time. I offered that Shirobako was an interesting anomaly being neither published by the usual suspects or really following the formula of typical best selling media in Japan.
There's no "hurr get taste" about it or any dumb factors like that. Please don't shit up these threads with this sort of inanity and trying to par the conversation down to levels of fanboyism.
There's only one way - get some taste.
Manga is a bit of a different beast in that it's generally seen as more socially acceptable and mainstream in Japan and thus you have different kinds of titles written for different types of demographics that anime rarely targets anymore because there's actually a market for them as far as manga goes. Anime meanwhile has chosen a premium model for itself that arguably even most anime fans themselves who watch or stream anime aren't particularly interested in besides the hard cores of certain genres, fetishes or franchises who will buy three copies, watch one, keep one in a collectors box and have one to loan to friends. Meanwhile with manga you can get that purchase from that kid stopping by the corner store with his allowance looking for something to entertain himself just as easily as you can get that purchase by that salaryman who will read his weekly on the train to work and then leave it there for the next person to read that you'll practically never get with anime outside of something like Gundam Unicorn or the odd Ghibli film just because it's so expensive and only highly devoted kinds of otaku will even buy. This is why you see manga sales in the millions and 7 digits while you usually see anime says in the thousands and 4 digits.
Anyway thanks for giving me something different to talk about and consider. It's nice to see someone without just a typical one liner or dumb comment like "Git taste" or telling people to stop complaining without even beginning to understand what it is they are actually even talking about around these parts. IMO maybe some people should take up more manga like yourself because they can clearly use the exercise in reading comprehension hahahaha.

So Haikyuu, Free and yowapeda keep selling due to massive fujoshi support or at least that's what I assume.

Psycho Pass season 1 didn't particularly light it up that I recall, particularly considering it had Urobuchi script writing credits and the usual batting average such things tend to have on the Japanese market. Definitely not a huge shortfall but considering I believe the second seasons first volume actually did a little better than the first series first volume I think comparing the two isa little more complicated.
