Xebec, the West Tokyo-based anime production company known for titles such as Kidou Senkan Nadesico (Martian Successor Nadesico), Soukyuu no Fafner (Fafner of the Blue Sky), and To LOVE-Ru, will be broken up after 24 years in business. The decision, which was announced on Friday, comes just months after the company's core animation business was sold to Sunrise in November.

According to a press release published by parent company IG Port, Xebec will cease to exist as a business entity on May 31, 2019. Xebec's post-production teams, which were not part of the sale to Sunrise, will be broken up and consolidated into several IG Port companies, but Production I.G will inherit the company's assets. Copyright of Xebec's past works will revert to the IG Port group as a whole.

Xebec Zwei, the company's Nerima-based studio which is responsible for photography and compositing of Soukyuu no Fafner: The Beyond, was transferred to the ownership of Production I.G and renamed IG Zwei in December. Xebec's coloring and finishing department was consolidated into anime production company Signal.MD. Industry insiders have also reported that about half of Xebec's original staff have moved to Tatsunoko Production.

Xebec was founded in 1995 as a subsidiary of Production I.G. Prior to its dissolution, the company had been incurring constant deficits. In the fiscal year ending May 31, 2018, it reported a net loss of ¥126.54 million (US$1.13 million). Most recently, Xebec was responsible for leading the production of Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2202: Ai no Senshi-tachi.

Damn, this is not great news. I didn’t watch much of their shows in the first place but it’s sad to see yet another Studio bite the dust.
Goodbye Xebec!

On a positive note though, I hope Production I.G. now takes the initiative for FullMetal Panic Season V.

Never heard of that studio and wasn't a fan of anyone of those shows, nothing of value was lost.

Edit: Just check the list of anime they animated and I don't like not a single one of them, this may sound harsh, but on a business perspective your business is bound to fail when all the titles you create is basically trash.

Now give us third season of TLR Darkness with Production IG budget.
Kickstarter for Rokujouma is fully funded. Good work everyone. Lets wait for the result of our hard work together.

Never really liked Xebec, most of their more known mainstream titles have all been ecchi trash.

Still sad to see a studio go, but it is what it is, just move away and let BASED NETFLIX keep making fighting manly shows, ecchi BTFO.

That was to be expected.. without Production I.G The whole group would've been in the red, as most of the other subsidiaries were under-performing in net profit, and Xebec was the worst offender.

Edit: people seems to think that the company is completely gone when actually it just got sold to Sunrise and renamed to Sunrise Beyond.

Damn, one of the few last studious still making actual mecha series is gone. Their track record is a mixed bag but when they did good, it was very good. USY2199 alone is enough for me to forgive them all these crappy rom coms they made. I wonder what will happen with USY remakes now.

Calm down now, we can't just go losing all of the largest studios.

kind of weird since they have lot of successful titles under their name yet still get huge net loss.. seems like very bad management.

It's actually just the nature of the industry. The studios have it pretty rough. Though they don't all have net losses such as Xebec.

This is unfortunate but all the best to the various staff members joining the other giants such as Sunrise and Tatsunoko!

Nyaruko was a big hit during its airing season while it lasted.

That doesn't say anything that isn't obvious. I'm talking about whether they will continue, and if so, if the quality won't drop.

Well, Invisible Victory abbreviates to ‘IV’ which is 4 in Roman Numerals and Japanese refer to it as the 4th Season too, if I’m not wrong, by counting the Fumoffu Season as the 2nd Season rather than a Spin-Off.

Makes sense, but it's still a spin-off season tho since they are just funny side stories featuring the daily lives of the protagonists at school. But yeah, what you said is correct too, i totally forgot about the Fumoffu season👍

👍
I agree, it’s pretty much a Spin-Off with little to nothing to do with the Canon overarching plot. But it is what it is, I suppose.

Wow...er, this is really sad news, because Xebec is one of those studios who really tried hard at almost EVERY genre they can do.

When it fails, it fails hard (e.g. Clockwork Planet) but when it succeeds, it succeeds best (e.g. their early works of the late 90s and 2000s + some memorable series such as Fullmetal Panic, Yamato)

R.I.P Xebec. You will be dearly missed.

They really missed a chance with Nadesico that was one of the most popular series in Japan.

Instead of making a direct sequel , they went on to make 1 game for the Saturn and one for the Dreamcast, to bridge the events between the series and the movie. Thus those who had not played the games would miss all the events between the series and the movie. Plus two Nadesico movies were canceleed and a sequel series never saw the greenlight.

Would have liked to see a final conclusion. Everything after that really pales in comparison, though Fafner Exodus was decent.

That's such a shame :(

As mentioned in the article, Xebec produced Martian Successor Nadesico, one of the most influential early-modern space operas. It's sad to see a company legacy be destroyed like this. Like all good things, Xebec too has to come to an end.

Best wishes to all the staff who are undergoing the transfer!

Xebec was huge at the beginning with Nadesico which was the AOTY of 1996 in Japan. Same in 2000 with Love Hina but then it failed to became one of the mains studios of the 2000's ... It's a shame as Yamato 2199 was one of the best post-2010 productions but I think the studio had a lot of issues even before that date ...
