| I thought something very different was going to happen on the car ride (something supernatural). Anyway awesome episode and wow he is a player, just like every other male in this series (Miki of course being the exception to the rule). |
| i'm so disappointed in Utena.. first was Touga.. now Akio.. lool.. so Utena's type are playboys who manipulate others.. cool having the protagonist favor guys like that regardless of who Utena ends up with in the last episode, i'm already disappointed in what has happened with her love life.. i feel like i'm forcing myself to watch this now that i'm only a few episodes away to complete this.. hope something changes big time.. not just Utena realizing what Akio's been doing with Anthy and all.. but something more.. hope that happens.. if not i'm going to be sad.. |

| It just keeps getting stranger. Some bits made me think of David Lynch. Like when Akio was kissing Utena and Anthy appeared in the background with the candelabra, only to disappear suddenly. Kanae also disappeared very suddenly, just leaving her mother there. And all that candle symbolism, whatever that was. Ah and then there was Akio talking about Utena's wish to be a prince with a frog perspective of his tower being shown on-screen. |

| Akio is a magnificent bastard - he may be a terrible person but you have to admit that he does he evil deeds in style. Still, I don't like to see Utena so uncertain - she wavered a bit over Touga as well but that passed relatively quickly. Hopefully that will be the case here. |

| I really missed the symbolism and creepiness. I hope it stays for the rest of the episodes, especially now that we're so close to the end. I used to be really creeped out by the shadow girls, but now, their segments are one of my favorite bits in the series. |

I think she is just genuinely confused about her feelings and why people have such an interest in her. It's daunting and a bit scary when smooth talkers approach you. Her confusion just shows what Utena is: very naive and driven by a single goal. If something sways her and drives her sight away from the prince, she has a hard time figuring out what she should feel. |

| This was one of the best episodes of the show so far and absolutely punishing to watch. Akio is front and center this episode as we see just how twisted and manipulative he really is. Right as Utena is beginning to question her feelings for him, Wakaba shows up and exacerbates that situation by spending a lot of time with Akio making Utena jealous. Thus begins Akio's seduction of Utena, a visceral and unpleasant to watch display that ends with her implied deflowering. If Utena's ever going to realize Akio's the puppertmaster behind all this, she's first going to have to unwind herself from around his finger. I think the most interesting part of all of this is Anthy's reaction. She seems accepting of Akio's apparent seduction of Utena, but we see her somewhat unsettlingly watching them get busy in the car. Clearly Anthy is unhappy with the situation, but who she is more angry at and how it will manifest itself is the more pertinent question. During their bedside scene this episode, Utena questioning her faithfulness to the memory of her Prince asks Anthy if she has a prince of her own. It's unclear whether she means Akio or Utena, but either way she's surely feeling betrayed right now. I have to say despite being central to her character, I've never been a big fan of Utena's attachment to her memory of the Prince. Mainly because the show will go for long stretches where it won't even bring it up, and then suddenly she's again talking about how he's all she cares about. It almost feels wrong for a character who otherwise shirks gender and romantic norms. Still I really liked the recurring imagery of the chandelier to show her wavering faith in that ideal. It was as clever a visual metaphor as any in the show. I feel like this episode expanded on Akio in a lot of interesting ways too. We're starting to see kinks in his seemingly impenetrable facade. Little things like Utena noticing that his car is the one she's been seeing lately. But the biggest of course is the revelation his entire vaunted position at the school is dependent on his marriage to Kanae. Not only that but it's a precarious arrangement as he's also seduced her mother into letting him do whatever he wants. He's built his empire on a house of cards, and the ways in which it will come crashing down are more and more apparent. This was a great episode, and one that really broke the mold of this arc while advancing the story more than any previous episode had. It also had a really cool Shadow Puppet scene that likened Utena's sexual awakening (or perhaps Akio's lustfulness) to the red shoes of lore. As ever can't wait to see what this show does next. |
