I've been trying to decide on which anime to get. I've narrowed down my choices to Eureka Seven and Mysterious Girlfriend X. I'm going to try to convince myself to buy one of those next year.
That Keijo ad is hilarious when you think about it. It's a giant poster of an ass on the side of a building, lol. Something like that wouldn't get a pass in The States. Too many people would complain about how sexist and objectifying it was.
A high school battle harem or four isn't so bad as long as unique shows are still being made. I'd have to give up on anime otherwise.
Yuri on Ice is a testament to how brilliant Sayo Yamamoto is as a director. I have literally no interest in figure skating, and yet she made that story more fun and heartfelt than many shows that are about things that I care about. I gave it an 8/10, the same rating that I gave Flip Flappers.
While the "love conquers all" was laid on a bit thick, it didn't hamper my overall enjoyment of Flip Flappers. I gave it a bonus point for imagination, and for never being dull.
How did you feel about these shows? Are you looking forward to anything this Winter?
Happy new year! ^_^
I heard that Flip Flappers and Keijo aren't doing well in Japan. :( Japan used to bask in their weirdness, and now they seem to be adverse to it. Anime is probably destined to become more normal and formulaic. It was fun while it lasted. RIP.
I saw that Keijo scene in full, and I don't understand what they're doing either, lol. It was a hilarious scene, though. The girl on the left had a butt that acted like a homing missile. XD
Black Jack is outstanding. It has a few hammy moments, but as a whole it takes itself very seriously. Our mutual friend Shocked essentially described it as a series of mini-movies. That would be a fair assessment. It's episodic, so you can watch it at your own pace without pressure to finish it.
Are you still enjoying Yuri on Ice?
Anyways, I can tell by your praise that Fune wo Amu is your favorite of the season but do any others stand out to you? I have to say that The Great Passage is my favorite as well haha. I might have to see the live adaptation once the show is done.
Here's some classy Keijo action that you've been missing out on.
I re-watched Haibane Renmei a month or two ago. Yeah, it still holds up very well. It's still a 10 in my book. I finally started Rose of Versailles, which had a very strong first episode. I'm bracing myself for the impending tragedy train.
Girlish Number is a strange one because I do love satire, but all of the characters are less than stellar human beings and I can't watch one episode without wanting to punch at least two of them.
To my astonishment, a remastered Blu-ray of Oniisama e was recently released and posted. The quality is stunning*. I ended up re-watching the whole thing over the last few days, and moving it into my favorites. If an anime is good enough for me to watch three times now, it deserves to be in my favorites.
Yuri on Ice is soooo unabashedly gay. I figured that it might turn out that way after the OP, which had one of the gayest songs I'd ever heard. I'm glad. Anime needs more non-violent man love. As long as no one tries to sexually assault anyone, as they often do in yaoi, I'll be fine with it.
I really hope Dr. Salt doesn't turn into that one character who makes life hell everyone, breaks bonds that take 4 episodes to rebuild, etc. I dislike these types of characters the most. I just want every episode to end happily. No cliffhangers!
My inner social justice warrior has been dominant lately. When I look at titles like Udon no Kuni, my knee jerk reaction has been, "Blah, everyone is the same shade again." I know that Japan is 98.5% Japanese, but the lack of diversity is getting monotonous. I want to see more kinds of people doing more kinds of things. Basically, I want another season of Space Brothers.
Since I've already completed 30 episodes of JoJo, I figure that it would be a waste for me to drop it now. Only 9 more episodes and a few more contrived stand users to go... The last episode had a stand-user cat... Nearly everything has gotten a stand at this point.
The girl in that Keijo picture can move so fast that she can create holograms with her body. Keijo is starting to grow on me. I laughed pretty hard a few times during the last episode. Their teacher is amazing.
Yuri on Ice is growing on me, too. I'm curious about how the rivalry between the two Yuris will play out. And I chuckled at the behind-the-butt shots toward the end. Ass is getting a lot of attention this season.
I don't think we have to worry too much about Flip Flappers getting bogged down with plot. After watching the second episode, I suspect the plot will be very simple, which, as you pointed out, is fitting for such an freewheeling show that's literally about fantasy and adventure.
Ugh, I have to watch JoJo today... I can't wait to be done with this season.
An anime that came out of nowhere is Gi(a)rlish Number. I watched it, and inside of the typical vapid idol/seiyuu show, it's a huge critique of the "rotten" anime industry. Totally caught me by surprise.
And yes, I'm very excited for Shouwa 2 :) Same thing when Mushishi 2 was announced.
New Years will be sweet. :)
