Does this really happen in the idol scene in Japan? Guess so huh? I imagine there's billions of groups formed but only a few make it big...what happens to those who didn't then? :/

Happens in Japan, happens in Korea, happens in Europe, and it happens in the US. Happens everywhere there are "idols". This is actually pretty tame compared to what could happen in Japan, after all where do you think all those new girls in JAV come from? Genshiken had a throw away line once about how Satsuki could be a recruiter for the AV industry, that's how common it is. Even a tame morning drama on NHK like Ama Chan mentions their existence.

Finding a good strong manager is the key to being a success anywhere in the world, Matsuda isn't one (yet), he is weak and spineless, and would have been taken advantage of as he was here. The President, though completely selfish (or more to the point because she is selfish) has the attitude required to make it in the industry (though of course exaggerated for comedic effect), at least it appears on a local level (most of her talent graduate when they head off towards Tokyo, as the songwriter combo showed).

So that is what I meant by this show having some darkness. Think that producer was bad? Honestly he wasn't anywhere as bad as he could have been. Bikinis? That is nothing. Old men being frisky? That is nothing, it could have easily been far worse.

Before the westerners here get all self righteous, why do you think so many "child idols" end up becoming overly sexualized (Spears, Cyrus, Lohan, just to mention a couple of recent ones). If you don't think it happens in Hollywood, you are fooling yourselves. At least this show hasn't yet.

How is the first part simply an anime fan-service if that's what happens in real life too? start up celebrities getting shady jobs early in their career are not uncommon.. do you know how many celebrities started up as a gravure idol or some even as porn actress??

Honestly I don't know if you guys are actually PRUDE or maybe watching too much anime has made you like one of those wimpy harem MC who flinched and grossed out at the slight view of anything barely sexual. Seriously, just go back watching kids show if you can't stomach the reality of idol world.

So you're basically saying it's all right to FORCE girls into doing what they obviously do not want to do (hell, they didn't even know the full description of the job they were about to do thanks to that manager)?

I'll tell you, if Matsuda even read the contract to begin with, WUG would've not accepted the job in the first place. Or maybe you're too blind to see that they're clearly being abused and vandalised, no? You need more ethics and logic on your brain, kid.

Go back to watching some more Hitomi Tanaka on your bed.

Where the fuck did I say that it's okay for them to be harassed? I merely pointed out that this kind of thing is not at all uncommon. I was shooting back at those who hate this series because they think it's all about fan service, well guess what.. the idol industry IS all about fan service. A noob manager and a fresh idol group filled with amateurs are obviously prone to fall to this kind of job. Honestly they weren't in a position to be choosy about their job and they were obviously tricked by that shady producer.

Before calling someone a kid maybe you should go back to school and learn how to read first. And dude, Hitomi Tanaka? your taste is bad

The opening is pretty lazy. Reusing the insert song from the movie and just inserting clips of animation from the movie. It says there will be another one on MAL though, so hopefully that one will be worth watching.

i don't understand how anyone can watch this and see the scenes of the girls being exploited/uncomfortable and think it's meant to be fanservice??? it's clearly making a comment that harrassing girls and forcing them into situations like that /isn't/ okay, and the idol industry is kind of a creepy place - especially for new girls who don't have much of a name and so can be taken advantage of more easily.

even so... i feel like this anime is conflicted, between wanting to be a genuinely 'gritty' show that is making a point, or being a sweet and 'everything will work out ok!' optimistic and cute show...? i kind of hope it sticks to the former and doesn't end with a 'suddenly everything is fine and ok!' happy ending, because that would kind of subtract from the more serious issues it's trying to explore...
Well all said and done, in episode 1, when they danced and showed their panties, the characters themselves even called it fan service. Although episode 2 may have been a bit extreme, it is in fact, fan service. By fan service, I meant it for the viewers. But if you truly believe that the reason the author/artist did it to expose the life of idols and the terror of harassing young girls, not saying it's not possible, but quite a leap in my honest opinion.

Dem asses!

The manager is such a push over ( Most of the girls are too ). I hate the dude. Anyone with a brain knew that Sudo guy was bad news when he comes in looking like a damn pimp.

Also they just let the President back without much complaints. That was pretty annoying considering she ran off and likely just came back because they just happened to bump into her, possibly causing her to feel guilty. Regardless, it was a dick move on her part.

Hopefully that's all over and done with so we can get back to seeing them rise to the top.

I was pissed at the pres, but now I think she'll make up for it.

Loving this show so gar, this is definitely the most unexpected great show of the season!

I hated watching this episode (5/5 btw). I want to beat the s**t out of every one of those sick f**ks. That butt-slap... I'll break yer hand, sicko. I was literally yelling at my screen for them to just walk out, especially for that Miyuu kiss scene (so glad it went the way it did).

I wish their idiot manager wasn't such a pushover. The dirtbag president of their idol company had to save the day... but at least she has the backbone to deal with it.

What about parental consent? Those girls (most anyways) are not adults. No parent would ever allow that.

This series is exceeding my expectations as far as drama. It's not just some happy little idol show. I was hoping they would turn away from this obvious sick scam at the start of the episode... but instead they beat me over the head with it emotionally.

well this anime is slice life so its not the same as those idol anie that have happy episode
for me the author, just give as a view how life as an idol would be specialy both the manager and the idol are amateur. i got a feeling there's a lot more problem in the future.

How much I love the opening song...

Btw, am I the only one who finds the "Wake Up, Girls!" logo to be super-lame? Like couldn't they try harder and at least make it pretty. At least, they could choose a better color than green, anything but green!

Seems like they are not gonna give much attention to background. I am starting to dislike the manager. I feel bad for all the girls, that manager is to blame for that... So glad that the president is back! Miyu is surprisingly mature. I love how it is being realistic.

Glad to see Miyu shining at the performance in the maid cafe. Now those are true fans and not some shitty pervy old fart at the lounge.

Looks like the girls got some real decent job now thanks to Tange. Still dont like what Tange did with the whole running away thing but sure am glad shes back to help out.

Kinda worried that this show is kinda slow because it only has 12 episode and im wondering how the rest will turn out.

I don't know how I should respond to this episode.

On one hand I dislike some of the developments (or lack of, rather) like Matsuda's continued spinelessness and inability stand up for the girls, the old hag's return, etc. It was also greatly perturbing to see how the innocent girls were getting mistreated, and harassed by a bunch of sick fucks.
But on the other hand I like the continued emphasis on the difficulty of being an idol, especially during the short focus on Miyu where she talks about how she's unprepared for all the indirect obligations that the idol industry requires.

I suppose asking for a strong male character is too much to ask for from any anime.. still as spineless as he was from 7-Idols.

I felt so bad for the girls during the first half. You'd think Mayu would've known something was up and questioned it further, but... plot convenience, I guess. (Unless she never had to be in such a situation before, but you'd think she'd have been the most suspicious.) I feel the most sorry for Miyu, and I felt really happy for her by the end.

Guess it's a good thing the president came back and got them something more proper (hopefully), but she was forgiven too easily. I see her doing the same stunt again in the future.

Looking to be a good series so far. I'm definitely sticking around.

Dropped this shit at 16:30 even though the president is back now, this shit is so awful. I don't think we actually need to see these happening even when people tell us that these shits happen in real life.

Idol girls are plain stupid, I can agree with one or two or even three agreeing with that swimsuit shit but all 7 of them are shamelessly wearing that shit and took it as some sort of "work ethic"? Idols' job is to show their skin now, apparently, that's no different than some hooker and stripper. Not looking down on hooker or stripper here, but their main job is to strip, and idol's main job should be singing or dancing or whatever it is, but not to strip.

Realistic idol show? When the characters are so stupid beyond belief? Yeah right. /rant

Its pretty clear on there faces that they're uncomfortable about it. Also it ain't exactly unheard of for an idol to wear a bikini to show some skin, so its not that surprising that they didn't outright refuse the bikinis.

While I wouldn't go that far, the idol business is basically all about the idols selling themselves in a way. While obviously not like the way Sudo was selling em, Idols do use there bodies/looks to attract viewers the same way a model attracts views, in fact modeling is part of an idols career. theres more to the idol business than just singing and dancing.

Didn't like the first half very much but what is good about it is that it showed the darker side of the idol world. That sets WUG ahead of other idol shows, who often just focus on the good and ignore creepy fans like that. I don't understand how everyone's okay with the manager coming back like that. I mean, sure, she got them a job but she LEFT WITH THEIR MONEY and to top it off, comes back with an attitude- not even telling them what she did with their money! I mean, what's stopping her from doing this again any time soon? She's not all that dependable and I'd be on my guard now that she's back.

As for Matsuda, I was really hoping that at least one of the girls would bitch slap him so hard across the face that maybe it'd knock some sense into him for once. What retard doesn't read a CONTRACT and leaves the 'pay' ENTIRELY UP TO THE GUY WHO OFFERED THE JOB? I don't know why or how these girls stayed and continued with the work. I would have thrown a fit and walked out and the worst (or maybe best since the purpose of this show seems to be exposing behind-the-scenes for idols) is that I'm not sure anymore of whether or not it would count as unprofessional. I mean, where do you draw the line? Do you only wear swimsuits or do swimsuit performances when you're famous or do you start off with them? Should you not do them at all as an idol? What morals are you willing to bend backwards when being an idol? Should you have to do that? Where do you draw the line? This isn't just about liking your fans- it's also about dealing with people who violate you whether it's verbally or physically and do it because they 'like' you. How do you deal with those people? Do you pretend to be nice so you don't lose fanbase or do you act honestly and refuse to interact with them?

Anyways, besides that eye-opener, it's definitely interesting how Mayu kept repeating, "It's a job, we have to do it". I wonder if that has anything to do with her past and if maybe that's why she left or got kicked out of the group. Maybe Mayu didn't accept a job like that. However, if that were the case, I feel like she'd appear more conflicted whereas she seemed more resolved and determined rather than disturbed so I'm guessing it may be that she's already used to such work and doesn't find it abnormal at all...It's kind of sad. I know I certainly wouldn't be able to handle it- I only wonder what these poor girls go through every single day with old drunk geezers making lewd remarks =/

And as for the men taking pictures/video of the girls in the swimsuits, that's DEFINITELY going to come up later on when/if they get famous and I'm guessing that'll be a fantastic episode of scandal to watch. Most likely uncomfortable, but a really nice dosage or reality for once. On another note, the animation this episode kind of looked cheap (particularly when they showed people turning their faces) so I hope they fix that later on.

Well-placed my feet on the ground, the plot still gives me a vein of seriousness unusual to other series of the same type. Sliding narrative, the characters begin to be characterized, shame about the unappealing designs and animations very woody.
Very beautiful is the opening to the ending.
How I wish that this series would improve technically and graphically.
I have to say that the episode for my taste lasted too little! ^ ^ "

I don't think I've been this uncomfortably infuriated by anime in a long time. My heart wouldn't stop pounding with rage watching the girls being degraded like that. Seriously die in a fire Sudo and thank you for putting your foot down Miyu. I was also pissed off by Tange's return. I don't care how well connected she is, what she did in the movie was flat out inexcusable and I don't think I'll ever be able to accept her return.

On a happier note, I liked Miyu's maid performance, the way she got the audience involved with her bright personality makes her my favorite so far. It was heartwarming to see that the regulars actually care about her future and cheered her on.
