Gunbuster coming out of the hangar and flying through space with arms crossed = EPIC.

"When you do spill milk, just pour some more." Coah, you're such a badass.

Seriously, every time Noriko calls Amano "onee-sama" I can't help but think of MariMite. Jung Freud = Touko. MariMite in space lmao!

Okay Gainax I can see how your work in this may have provided the "roots" for TTLG.

Nobody believed in her exept the coach. Glad to see a good looking mecha. And that battle was nice. Now "one-sama" became less bitchy.

Noriko finally decides to woman up and launch in the Gunbuster. Kinda badass how it came out with its arms crossed. It kinda reminds me of Gurren Lagann which is a later Gainax work.

So, Noriko actually did something for a change.

While still not great, this is the best episode so far.

still can't get over that she got this far in the show, given that much responsiblity, and she's never done a single thing of note up until this point !

It's made very clear at the end they were told to finish up the story in two episodes, shame.

The best episode so far, it feels like the mecha space battle royale that pays off the first half of the series buildup. Knowing the brevity of this OVA, it's hard to stop yourself the first time from trying to predict how far we'll go in each episode. I was kind of worried at the beginning we were just going to spend a whole episode with Noriko broken. And truthfully we do, she spends the majority of it a disheveled mess. It seems like she's getting it together, but her breakdown during the attempted duel with Jung and the subsequent scenes of her in her bunk were harrowing to watch.

At this point if you're along for the ride, it's hard not to feel some empathy for Noriko here as she is at her lowest. It once again calls to mind EVA to me, with Shinji's avoidance of the robot meant to reflect his burgeoning depression. Here it's just supposed to represent a plot related trauma but it's effective in much the same way. I particularly keep thinking of her frantically thinking "will I be next?" as Amano and Jung argue over her. And her scene at the vending machine alone made me well up a little, again impressive for how little screen time Smith had.

In the big finale she suddenly finds the courage to defend her loved ones and the Earth itself. She steps into the experimental giant mech the Buster, which Coach had been subtly grooming her for. As a Gainax fan it's a really exciting scene to watch, as the hitherto unseen mech wooshes to the surface of the ship striking the signature Gainax pose for the first time. The birth of an era man, that it's followed up with the most impressive mech fight in the whole anime and a cathartic hero's ending worthy of Top Gun just adds to the excitement. I was a little disappointed that we'd only seen variations of the same alright mech until now. This beautiful bastard blew those complaints out of the water.

My hair was on end when Amano gleefully lands in Noriko's palm while the "I love you" part of the OP drops. It's a jaw dropping and extremely cinematic ending scene, one that feels worthy of a finale. That I doubt they'll try and top the sheer exuberance of this one interests me as to where the series is going now in its last 1/3rd.

Thank god Jung didn't turn into Kashiwara 2.0. I didn't realize there's so many girls in this series that are thirsty for the Coach lol.

I was wondering when the Gunbuster was going to appear and I can tell you that this episode did not disappoint!

The Gunbuster is kind of ugly. xD

Don't get me wrong because I liked the episode but... what about the Gunbuster?

Is she able to pilot it because her training? Or it was fear what restrained her? She was scared but just because she isn't anymore she is able to ride this? Could someone else do the same if given the chance? Is the Gunbuster made even for newbies? Haha. I'm not going to put much thought on this but at the same time, why? Besides she being the main character.

Edit: The only thing I didn't like is the red-haired girl getting mad because? She wants coach d?

That was the first time the gunbuster was operated in the series and I must say its one huge ass machine. Also I am proud of Noriko for destroying that Space monster leader with it, but I wished Kazumi was with her though. I think I love Noriko's character now.

Ok, this episode was good 80s mecha shit. I see where Gurren Lagann got some inspiration from. But I wasn't expecting that form of attack. I'll just wait until Gunbuster development is complete.
I wonder what's coming up now. A mini closing arc?

Also got finale vibes from this. The staff roll and the way they dealt with previewing next episode made me think if it was planned to be the last episode. It also took several months for the last 2 episodes to be released.

Unless there's something I misunderstood, this is some rushed development right there... I mean, Noriko's character has always been about how she isn't strong (physically and mentally) enough to be there but also how she wants to fight against adversity, here we were discovering a quite interesting aspect of her character with her having ptsd and being terrified by the idea of dying in space... And all of a sudden she's the ultimate badass ? Come on, it just came out of nowhere, especially given that her relationship with Smith didn't have much impact due to them barely knowing each other.
Plus, Noriko said her old self had died... But I'm still not sure about who this "old self" was outside of her ability to cry all the time. There has to be more to a character you know. (And yes I know she's naive and all, but it isn't enough to provide her an actual personality.)

I don't want to criticize because it's a classic and people are gonna get mad at me, I definitely consider the fact that I might be in the wrong... But for now it's really how I see it.

The Exelion sure is vast and luxurious, a lot of echoes from Macross here.

And thus we see the titular robot in action, gotta appreciate how all of the detailing was drawn by hand.

And there it is, folded arm pose that has a legacy to even this day.

The drama before the conflict kinda ruined this episode for me.

The battle was alright. Noriko's a bit crazy going for a potentially dangerous manoeuvre like that.

Makes me wonder tho, why does the pilot of Gunbuster have to be Noriko or Amano. It seems like anyone could pilot it, and there's sure to be more experienced pilots. Power of youth, I suppose.

ifyou look at the control system, it's entirely different from all the the mechs we are show. A much more natural style. The other control scheme looks like rock 'em sock 'em robots by comparison.

Looks like this ova is more action focused rather than focusing on characters. It might just be the fact that it's late but my eyes started to shut through most of the fighting. Characters are decent but most development is limited to the main few

The cinematography of the show never ceases to amaze me. Her development was a bit sudden, and the way the story structured is pretty cliche (maybe not back then), but this was a fucking cool episode. So much hype when Gunbuster popped out, that shit is so fucking sick.

God this episode was so awesome, Noriko went from grief stricken and getting scared of going out into space again because of Smith to ultimately kicking ass in the Gunbuster! The way it came out of the Exhilion with it's arms folded was so cool! Man Noriko just became a badass in the span of an episode just like that! God this anime is so good!

It was a pretty sweet battle scene. But it left a lot of questions up in the air for me personally. For one how did Noriko even know how to access the Gunbuster? We barely even saw it in the previous episode for a few seconds, now all of a sudden she just knew how to automatically use it. She went from being completely in tears to confident in a microsecond. I don't know, I hate to sound like a broken record in all my posts on this anime, but everything feels very rush though.
