Great episode, really touching.
The space battle fights were really amazing, and the idea of using a black hole to kill all those aliens was quite interesting.
Only the emo moment in the middle with onee-sama pissed me off but apart from this it was really a great episode.

Amazing episode, crazy mecha action! And have you seen the quality of the visuals?? Outstanding! Only 2 things bothered me, the overuse of "ecchiness" and GUNBUSTER SHIELD! wtf was that?

yeah i thought that was a little out of place too, but overall this episode was amazing, the production values are ridiculous for something made in the 80s. did anyone else catch the classic anime references in this episode? in noriko's room she had a Totoro and Nausicaa poster and you could see a small bit of what looked like a Space Battleship Yamato poster also. Also Coach without his glasses wtf

I said wow.. Seriously, this anime has been absolutely godly and its only been 5 episodes!
I used to be all gung-ho about the idea of living in the Space Age where I would be able to go on a journey across the universe and explore the stars and all that, but its made me realise how brutal the reality of it all would be.
Kimiko had aged 10 years! I cant even imagine how depressing it would feel if you were gone for a couple of months and everyone you knew had already moved on with their lives.

Something has got me thinking. If on earth pass 6 months while they get to the enemy fleet, doesn't that mean the enemy has 6 months to attack the earth? If when moving at light's speed you accelerate time it only affects you, the one moving at that speed, then for everything else, not onlythe earth, but the enemy ships as well, much more time would have passed. I guess they haven't thought it out too well.

The homing laser was awesome, but aside from that, the anime has great ideas, but the execution is poor, I have a hard time believing half the things that happen...

Wtf? The shield is a cape. Right........and those weapons...lol...

At least Noriko has finally stopped being the whiny bastard she was. She finally became the one to support Kazumi. Using a black hole to kill the enemy was pretty freaking awesome though.

And another important topic was brought up in this episode. The reality of light speed travel and the harsh consequences that come along with it. Damn, 10 years passed. I just realized that apparently, none of these girls have any other family.

Definitely got better last episode and this episode. Hoping it ends just as well to even out the horrible first 3 episodes.

Yeah that was lame. By progression of the attacks, the Super Lightning kick was one hell of an opening salvo, that incredibly long ranged, unnamed head laser attack, then the Homing Laser was awesome, after that the Buster missiles coming out of the fingers was batshit crazy it was spit like bullets out of a machine gun, then it pulled that cape...WTH was that?!! o_O

Still it was a great fight if you can get over the outrageousness of it all.

lol that gunbuster cape reminded me of something from g gundam.... sooooooooo glad noriko's character has changed so much. and alas! oneesama is a real human being...and whats this? coach is too!!!! yea id say this episode and the fourth realllly made up for the beginning which i utterly hated.

this whole show leaves me with a feeling of "star wars" which i gotta say i really like. usually epic anime get a higher rating with me :)

and that gunbuster has a really amazing style for the 80s. even the gundams in later series looked far inferior to that

So much fanservice in the beginning.. And I think that fight might have been tad too ridiculous :D And although coach is awesome I didn't really see Kazumi's feelings for him coming.

strong lack of character development. Unless of course Kazumi has some sort of mental disorder, but then again.... don't all females do? (yes joke) (not srs) (maybe semi-srs) (derp)

And for those dissing on the cape, shame on you. It may look like a cape from afar, but it's probably made by ultra rare extra-terrestrial metallic type materials none of you could ever dream of having. Y.Y

that was quite over the top (pun intended)
i didnt know that the Japanese knew van halen, i doubt that anyone in the 2030's still knows him but still nice.

also the black hole if they were too close, the event horizon, shouldnt they be cought too?
and you cant see a black hole so what they should have seen was the exact same 'frame' what happened before the black hole and alot of nothing. but from an animators point of view thats quite lame :p

The mc comes back and her 'childhood' friend is all grown up with a child. Damn it's painful to see the time passing by so fast... A lot of aliens are attacking the Earth and the only salvation are these two girls.

Holy shit. This episode made watching those other four somewhat average episodes worthwhile.
The dramatic moments in the beginning, the incredibly cool dramatic action scene at the end, all done with masterful animation, and great directing/cinematography.
Definitely the high point of the series thus far.

This episode contained so much hype it's unreal. The Totoro and Nausicaa posters were also pretty neat. And it felt like they went a little over the top with the titties. Titties here, titties there, titties everywhere and some badass fighting at the end so I guess this is the perfect episode of anime.

Holy crap, this episode gets really real. Despite it having been mentioned before I totally did not expect them to come back to an Earth where significantly more time has passed. Noriko's friend is all grown up! She has a kid! That was really sad to me, a realistic conflict in a series like this few would explore. There was something powerful about Noriko having saved the human race, and still coming back and feeling like an inadequate kid. Also I loved her very 80s wall posters including Van Halen and Totoro. The human parts were a riveting and emotional respite from last episodes uchuu kaiju bombast. None of it moreso than Coach.

I think it's fitting this episode abandoned the OP altogether. It was really cute and enjoyable for the first three episodes, and was perfect in the final scene of four. But here so much of it's cheery first episode has just been torn down it would feel inappropriate. I never expected Coach to die, I did not see that foreshadowed anywhere. And that he gets a death sentence here, and in a very brutal way at that is a saddening indication of the darker tone of Gunbuster's ending. At least he survived to see their triumphant return though.

The finale of this one was to me a bigger but less engaging follow up to the previous episodes. This time Noriko is piloting Gunbuster with a lovelorn Amano who sympathetically has never had the sweet emotionally sincere moment with Coach she always wanted. She and Noriko must come together to fight off this latest and greatest alien invasion. And they do and it's pretty awesome. The influence of this series on Gurren Lagann is even more apparent here in this scene. Noriko has come so far from the beginning till now. I have to admit this show has me under it's spell, and I felt proud of her watching this.

This episode was pretty damn dark, maybe the darkest so far. But it still ended in a big triumphant and pretty Hollywood fashion. The sheer will power of our heroines, allows them to overcome impossible obstacles. I'm excited and a little trepidatious to see where we're going to end up in the finale now.

Very OTT stuff, I can see TTGL and NGE tracing its roots back to this, and that makes it more fun to watch.

The black hole looked amazing and was a fairly realistic rendition.
