Yet another brilliant episode! Man, Minimori's flashback was really good, I love her character and it was nice to see her business-mind seemed to have came from a pretty wholesome spot, the way it was colored and animated was lovely too. In general this ep had some really lovely and expressive animation, especially towards the end when Asakusa had her "eureka!" moment. Can't wait to see how the girls' next project shall fair, once again this show never fails to make me feel happy and charmed thoroughly.

While i see the logic behind the invisible laser, i can't still accept it. Lasers are COOL.
If you want to make it more realistic, you can have a middle ground. Lasers can be seen if there's particles in the air and you can also see it shine on the lends it comes out of and where it lands.
So the first shot might me mostly invisible, but as soon as there's some destruction the air would be filled with smoke and other particles and the lasers could be seen.
Also, since it's meant to be extremely hot, you can make the air around it warp.

Finally, the coolest laser effect there is is when the beam bends because it hit some kind of special surface or an energy shield like in Akira when they shoot Tetsuo with lasers.

Kanamori's origin story would be a great opener for a revenge story. 'They ruined my family's store, now I ruin their business empire.'

Them scouting the new location was really interesting to watch. The city already looked nice and mysterious in its own way and then they created all this extra lore. My only question is: why UFOs?

I think something that sets this anime apart from most others is the way the main characters interact with the world. They can draw attention to the architecture of the city, note how it's changed, discuss why it was made that way and draw inspiration from. Theres a lot of thoughtfulness in it that I don't think other anime have for the place where characters spend their everyday lives. There's also different characters doing their own thing, different locations and businesses that don't revolve around the main trio. Then theres all the other bizarre clubs that don't really need an introduction but are just coexisting in the same space. I think this sort of world building is what makes it appealing. Nothing feels like a backdrop, just complementary to the experience.

THIS. The setting is amazing and how they interact with it and constantly draw attention to it makes it a very unique anime. Love how it's slightly surreal, too. Like the whole architecture of the school and the city feel almost dream-like. The school, particularly, falls into this "realismo mágico" mold, with all the crazy clubs, the school council's private army (???) and the school grounds being almost like a fortress/laberynth of different buildings, stairs and tunnels.

Reminds me of Fellini movies or Moebius comics.

Some of the shots in the episode the long panning shots specifically were some of the best I think I've ever seen. The detail in that sort of sketch style they use in their imagined world as the camera moved stayed so perfect. Every movement smooth as butter. Really made my eyes to wide at how incredible it looked.

Kanamori has the greatest business sense of anyone ever. As the episode played out showing how she set up this whole plan to go to the ramen shop guy so he'd get them funding from the Chamber of Commerce of all people. That's insane. She goofed them hard. Laughed so much as she said that near the end.

The flashbacks with her were great too. Back then Kanamori had the business of making money in mind. Having her uncle's store open in the snow as the only ones. Knowing the value of money when she got that extra pay she didn't take it for granted and worked harder to properly earn it. Broke my heart when the uncle said it was going to close, even though Kanamori said at the beginning the store closed.

Hit the nail on the head saying no one is coming to a store they don't know about. Which is why her idea to dupe all those officials so they can put an anime out at, what is basically Comiket but they can't call it that of course, is genius. The perfect plan to advertise all their unique ideas.

a Kanamori focus episode and the business of anime lol

that explanation of Kanamori about school jurisdiction limiting the animation clubs profit is spot on the problem with the current production committee system on the anime industry speficially with anime adaptations that most profit is not felt by the anime studios since they are just payed a fix fee for being a hired contractors only and when it comes to anime adaptations the anime studios are usually not part of the production commitee or rights ownership of the anime

and the whole selling merchandise stuff ye a lot of times the anime studios does that too, like selling t-shirts with drawings from their in-house animators

For some reason, I found Kanamori's backstory more endearing/touching than expected. I'm not sure why tho... it just gave me a mix of nostalgic feelings I can't really explain.

Anyways, this was another spectacular episode. I think I didn't mention it before but man I'm totally amazed by this series' world building and the amount of details that was poured in it. And to think it will now become the girls' play ground for their new project... boy, I'm so excited for the final product now!

I'm really loving the passion that went into this project. You can tell it's a love letter to the craft and to the industry and I hope someone out there is watching this and becomes motivated to create their own project. Wish the mainstream anime community off Reddit and MAL would check this out, definitely a masterpiece.

Kanamori's backstory is crucial.

Now we understand just why she's so focused on making sure there's a profit in the end, after all the expenses; she's seen what happens when that isn't the case.

It's not that she's necessarily a money-grubber by nature, but she learned some vital lessons early on. Although it's clear she did have a good idea regarding marketing and opportunities from an early age; as the one chap commented, she has a very good head for business, even if her maths weren't so good at that time.
Although I'd say that her grasp of mathematics was just fine; realizing that she could sell single units at a significant mark-up compared to multi-packs when the need was such that people would purchase them that way, for a businessman that's just the type of math you need to grasp.
Understanding when you can do so, and when you have to rely upon multi-pack sales, is crucial.

In addition being able to analyze the situation on the fly and modify your marketing isn't shabby: "I need gloves." "Here are gloves." "They aren't the gloves I need." "Combine them with what you already have, and they'll do the job better than anything else available at this time."

And, yeah.
It wasn't chance that led to their having lunch there when the creative types were looking for their next project...

Kanamori may appear brusk and unfeeling, but she loves that town.
She wants the businesses to survive, she doesn't want it to become a ghost town and all of them be forced to move away.
The only way to make that happen is to change the outside world's perception of their city, and get them to come there and spend money.
It's no longer on the normal travel routes.
They have to get people to want to go there despite the inconvenience.
To change perceptions such that what they are coming for makes it not inconvenient... (man, that phrasing is awkward.)

Love her character from the start of the first 3 episodes. After seeing her making a huge amount of effort to make her friends passion a reality literally. Even though her motives are clearly to earn extra buck is reasonable enough to get in the gig but the amount of effort and consideration the product will go through is commendable enough that it isn't the money anymore. And for the record, their efforts worth is not 20k yen it supposed to be 1.5 million which is true because the amount of time, effort, quality and investment for the project is something to be worth a huge payback and not something to joke about.

Fantastic episode!

Animators certainly deserve more money than they get, right? 1.8M is quite the stretch though but I hope that'll to fruition one day.

Kanamori's backstory was pretty powerful, I've to say. Now, we know where her incredible negotiating and "thinking two steps ahead" skills come from. Minimori's disbelief in finding about the closing of the shop though, heartbreaking.

Damn, that's some enticing project (leave it to Asakusa to come up with these gold ideas) they've come up with! And fully funded even, it can't possibly get better than this! Can't wait to see the end product!

And with this episode, Eizouken just confirms itself as a great anime.
I loved Asakusa's realization at the end (and her basically turning into a literal gremlin was priceless), but the higlight for me was Kanamori.
As much as I always really liked her, I didn't really get the hype, but here, I'll admit that she is truly great.
This show does such a good job at giving life to its characters.
Also, was Chibi-Mori voiced by Asakusa's va ? That is so cute ! I like this little detail as generally, young versions of anime girls are voiced by the same actress as their older counterparts, which sometimes makes for awkward moments where the va doesn't manage to modify her voice enough.
And the animation was paryicularly good in this ep, I loved it !

Got a question: Anybody got any idea why the revenue split for the club is only 15% and the robot club takes the rest?

For an anime that takes some focus on the production side, business, etc; they skipped that part and brush it off just because of "they're the client". It's honestly frustrating for me, coz the robot club really don't do that much. Almost every production stuff is done by Kanamori anyway (connection, outsourcing, etc).

In a real world, sure the client/producer might take a lot in the revenue split. But that's because they paid an agreed upon price for the artists in form of salary (they had to invest something). So they'd only take the profit after that. Here, they don't pay anything (zero investment), done so little, and yet takes a lot.

It's not even comparable to a manga-artists getting their works adapted by an animation company, coz in that scenario they got an important asset: manga. Meanwhile here, the concept, the robot, the story, everything really; are all coming from the Video Research club.

Kanamori's been all about the business and competitive life since she was really young, and it shows how much she's learned throughout the years of experience to implement it into the club - from dealings and negotiations, to building up attention and hype in various manners, etc. I liked the style of backstory they went for Kanamori this time. Also an anime utilizing the whole town in a way is a nice idea, and a stepup from the school setting they went for last time.

Good episode again as a whole, although it did feel a bit boring before Kanamori's backstory kicked in midway. Narratively this show has been a bit average and sluggish at times, but when it comes to backstories/screenings, this show mostly does really well with them.

The way Kanamori says "DVD" just kills me xD

Interesting parallels between production commitees (de-facto school clubs) and anime studios (Eizouken). They got even less pay for the work than for selling the video of Asakusa falling.

In the first few seconds after the opening I'm pretty sure Tsubame opened her mouth several times with no sound lol

Didn't expect the student council to find and confiscate the money since Kanamori seems to be pretty conscious about cash/cards.

The transforming UFO kinda reminded me of that thing from Penguindrum (though it's probably just meant to look like a jellyfish)

Comet-A = Comiket?

I doubt such relatively big projects (30 minutes??) can be done in such a short time with 2 (and really 1.5 given Asakusa's other responsibilities) animators in reality though, even with cooperation from other folks (audio, art, etc).

P.S. There's a real twitter account @eizoukenn and it was there before the account for the anime lol. Amazing.

The flashback puts in focus how Kanamori is different from the greedy corporate character that's often portrayed in media. The passion she displays for money isn't because she's a dollar signs eyed character, but rather she seems to genuinely love business because she recognizes that it's a place  you often make the most experiences and connections, and if that special place happens to be dependent on how much monetary gain it makes, then why wouldn't you put your all into trying to make the most money out of it?
