THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This was a really adorable episode. I really like how Hakumei is protrayed so far with the character's personality.

The animation style also feels very fluid and I'm impressed by how they adapted the setting so far. Not bad for the comedy too as it's not overly exaggerated but just enough for the humor.

Overall, I liked this episode. It feels like the show has a good direction so far with what it has to work with.

Alright, yeah, most anticipated anime of my life. Let's see how this goes. I cried watching the PV, so this could get ugly.

Agenda: push "Potatoes Adventure"

Faederwulf said:
podetus said:

Potatoes Adventure is a kinda a trend now and i like it .

A good bulk of the masterpieces of late have been potato adventures.

I'm going to stop reading the scanlations around chapter 16 and just read the manga as the physical official translation arrives, whenever that is. I decided I want the experience of seeing some parts for the first time in animated form.

Thursday night: freezing rain forecast for 10 AM Friday, could potentially take down power lines. HiDive promises simulcast at 8:30 AM. Better get some sleep.

Friday, 8 AM: went to bed early but woke up every couple of hours. Too damn hype.

I think that the biggest reveal will be the music, both the score by https://myanimelist.net/people/32281/Evan_Call and the OP and ED (assuming both play in episode 1). After saying that something like Flip Flappers' "Flip Flap Flip Flap" would be ideal, and actually getting singer https://myanimelist.net/people/47116/Chima from that song (credited as by "TO-MAS feat. Chima"), I wonder whether to expect further perfection, or assume that was an early cash-out. But I'm reminded of "The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia" -

Samuel Johnson said:
This Rasselas considered as a good omen. "Do not disturb your mind," said Imlac, "with other hopes or fears than reason may suggest: if you are pleased with prognostics of good, you will be terrified likewise with tokens of evil, and your whole life will be a prey to superstition."

Heh, they really come off like Yuu and Chito in this first scene, don't they? They're not really like them - Hakumei, especially, is the opposite of Yuuri's laziness. But they both love to eat.

Normally in any anime I stop and screen capture any scene with insects. Guess I'll have to play it light with this one.

Just absolutely beautiful.

I love that fuzz around beetles' mouths <3 And that Rainbow Connection-like track from the first PV.

HOW DO THEIR FEET LOOK LIKE THAT AND STILL WORK AWWWWW

No OP until next week. Oh well (:

Edit: gif'd Mikochi rubbing her face in Kafu's back feathers. https://imgur.com/gallery/LRQ3K

That was very nice.

The team from ''Kuzu no Honkai'' seems to be working on this seeing the paneling, i liked this already back then.

Pretty artstyle and very relaxing.

Lerche is delivering everytime no matter what the source is.

Hakumei and Mikochi is a pretty good anime so far. The overall presentation is very comfy and the story structure mainly uses world-building as a method of relaxing the viewer. The way these are executed remind me of the creative directing of Disney films like Winnie the Pooh. Personally, I have not been really attached to the world Hakumei and Mikochi offers yet. I would like more world-building, and maybe some integration of that aspect for interesting character development. The atmosphere is amazing, but how far can the anime explore its concept to keep me interested for many episodes?

@BluePikmin11 I think you'll get what you want :)

Something I hadn't really considered before is that the ocean's movement doesn't scale along with everything else. If it did, the harbor would be destroyed by normal everyday waves, and the town would have to be built a long way up because of tides and storm surges.

Cute, relaxing and charming. That's exactly what I was expecting from this first episode and it was what I got. Couldn't ask for a better first episode.
One of my most hyped anime for this season and I'm sure I'll love this.

The characters look fun and the setting has so much potential for great adventures. Definitely looking for more next week.

People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

They're friends and they have complementary living skills - Mikochi is good at (what in recent times have been regarded as) traditionally feminine jobs, like cooking and sewing; and Hakumei has traditionally masculine skills, particularly construction. If there's a detailed backstory, I haven't got to it yet :)

The title card and credits all in English really made it feel like opening a children's book. It's also nice to see a fairy tail-esque fantasy with pixies, talking animals, and picture book artstyle, rather than just the average Tolkien sword and sorcery fantasy.

First pleasant surprise of the season.
Love the art and atmosphere this anime has; just what I needed to fill the hole SSR left. Yuru Camp is still probably going to end up as my favorite SoL of the season; but this one has the fantasy and potential adventure elements that might make me rethink about it before the end.

What a great character establishing episode. We learned a little about the kind of people Hakumei and Mikochi are and the roles they play in each other's lives.

I think what I'm really liking about this show is the fuzzy storybook designs for the characters. It feels like a light fantasy but is filled with enough detail to be a believable world as well. Can't wait to see what this series has in store.

like every season previously, i carefully avoid those popular products like Fate/Extra, darling in the franxxx, overlord 2, 7 sins, Cardcaptor Sakura, some yuri animes, and every kyoto anime(you can check my animelist), and find some shows that i like. after Made in Abyss and Girls' Last Tour last year, i have to treat every anime with this kind of adorable flat faces as a potential underdog. thats the only reason i clicked this anime 5 hours ago. and after 20 minutes there was only one word in my mind:
surpriiiiiiiiiiiise

i wont analyze the plot cuz i neednt. it draws a toon world where to elfs (our main characters) live there daily life. about twenty years ago i was laying in a mat down the stars, listening to my grandmother reading storybooks. this show almost recovered those nice old days. it so warm, peaceful, melodious and relaxing. with no harems, no big tits, no super power, no sword and magic, i can enjoy a pure toon fantasy world. at some point i wanted to question how they earn money and why mikochi has so much knowledge (just like a super power mc), but who cares? the color and artstyle is very good, bright nnd fresh, really perfect for toon.

and occasionly, this show sells two blu-ray boxes, just like Made in Abyss. it seems that the market responses well for the first episode. the amazon limited version of blu-ray box 1 rushed into top 100 of all dvds in amazon japan (currently 98th in all video discs, 67th in all bds) after this episode aired. will it really be an underdog this season? i hope so.

but i really have two questions now. first, whats the official name of this show? the original japanese manga name is Hakumei and Mikochi, but i saw an english title like tiny little life in the woods. and second, is hakumei male or female? in synopsis it said "two girls", but it appears like hakumei has a boy voice(i mean original japanese dub).

final verdict: 5/5

Saw the panels and instantly knew who the director was. He's a good director for Lerche, plus he directed a really funny Gintama episode. Besides Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut and DR1's adaptation, I like all of Lerche's stuff from what I've seen, so I'm glad that this doesn't disappoint. As the potential to be the dark horse of the season like MIA and GLT.

Nice, enjoyable and a very relaxing first episode. Personally, the watercolor animation style is something I adore, and it’s nice to see Lerche get this right on the mark.

Glad it’s going to get an extra special episode later on too, and with all that let’s hope this show proves to be as good as Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryoukou of last season.

That was a simple episode. Simple characterization, simple plot, simple interaction, basically everything was so simplistic. It's so simplistic it's like watching little kids' show. Unfortunate, really.

Probably because many people did not enjoy the first episode.

Though I really prefer if the tidbits of the side characters on the ED, they put it between break instead. Currently, it's kinda hard to see the illustration when they put in on the ED
