Finally someone stands up to Haruhi over all the crap she does. Thanks to this episode, my dislike of her turned into hatred.
Jealousy over a guy is NO excuse for harassment.
I just wish Kyon had taught her a lesson (i admit a punch might be too much, but a slap i would have totally been okay with) and at least made her apologize for her behavior than just waltz in there later and encourage her more.
Even if Mikuru agreed to it, drugging her drink? Really? What the f-. Most of the crap Haruhi does is totally illegal. She needs to learn limits, regardless of how godly she may be. Being 'human' is no excuse for her mistakes because she's done more than the average human for the sake of her enjoyment. If she knew of her powers, she'd be a tyrant anyway with that behavior.

Having dependence on Kyon is pretty ignorant as well. JUST because he's Kyon, Haruhi automatically thinks she can do whatever she wants and he'll just follow. No Haruhi, it doesn't work that way. Everyone has a mind of their own, and it's being considerate of their opinions that makes relationships.

Okay, Haruhi rant over.

Making Mikuru drunk and then hitting her was just too far. However kyon should learn to let out anger gradually then exploding and learn from the esper to let things out nicely like saying mean things with a smile

This must've been what the future Mikuru was trying to avoid in season 1. She told Kyon "Don't get too friendly with me". She was trying to avoid the rage of Haruhi's jealousy

Never breed. People who say this... Should seriously never breed..... Ever.... She didn't hit her very hard..... Honestly it was akin to tapping a dog with a newspaper... Really... If you think THAT is hitting.... your kids are going to get picked on for crying because the person sitting next to them poked them......

Anyway.... Maybe it's because I don't like Mikuru that much, but I really wasn't affected by this scene at all..... Mostly when Kyon was about to hit Haruhi.... You could see how much it hurt her to see Kyon take that stance... Poor girl =/.

This time Haruhi is some spoiled little brat. And very annoying person, at least after this episode.
One would need some nerves to stay calm in such situation. Haruhi had finally been told what she could do and what she couldn't do.

And I hope for some sort catharsis in the end.

Agreed. I understand how some people are trying to make Haruhi seem like not a terrible person because she cared about her members a lot but doesn't show it, but still, that doesn't excuse her for being selfish all the time. Aside from that one episode in season 1, we still don't get a real good reason for why she is the way she is. I get that she is bored by how normal her life, or the world is, but she's not the only one. And what kind of high school student says stuff like, "I am the director so you have to do everything I say."

Hm as for the putting some sweet sake into Mikuru's drink, I think that other girl should've been smart enough NOT to, it was equally her fault. Still, it was Haruhi's idea.

Finally poor long-suffering Kyon tells Haruchui off! I was cheering. For all her strong and sometimes positive attributes, sometimes Harauchi behaves like a pure asshole, never letting anyone or anything get in her way. Kyon was the perfect person to take her down considerably.

Ok, here's the thing; I'm not a 'Mikuru' fan boy, cause I could care less about her. Hell it actually annoys me how jealous and annoyed Kyon gets whenever something happens with Mikuru, though I understand he likes her and is attracted to her, that's fine. However how irrationally Haruhi was acting towards her had reached an all time high. Nevermind making her do silly stuff, nevermind making her dress provocatively in public to Mikuru's embarassment, nevermind forcing her to act in awkward ways...

Here's the problem 1. telling her to get thrown into some nasty lake for the sake of the movie AND getting her way cause 'oh she's god, so if we say no we're fucked' and 2. spiking her drink and telling her to get kissed against her will, all of this NOT COOL. On top of the constant hitting her on the head, especially when she was drunk. I'm no expert on psychology but anyone can tell that Haruhi is jealous of Mikuru in terms of her looks and perhaps even Kyon's affection. I don't like Mikuru's personality much but I'd have to be inhuman to be happy with how she treats Mikuru, like a 'toy' as she even confirmed herself. Kyon hitting her seems bad but honestly ANYONE, guy or girl, who goes SO FAR to manipulating everyone, practically breaking the law, acting like a total asshole to YOUR OWN FRIENDS deserves just as much as getting hit.

So obviously in the end he didn't do it, and we've all speculated the reasons why it was good he didn't do it and it was good they made up. But real talk, Haruhi definitely deserved it. I don't hate Haruhi and I find most of her stupid schemes to be funny, but as much as I don't like Mikuru it wasn't right how she was getting treated to that extent. In the end Haruhi felt dejected cause she thought Kyon would always support her, which he did by making up, against his better judgement. Thus the show goes on and entertainment continues. However we can't ignore that her actions were absurd and immoral, and while hitting her seems 'harsh', anyone who treats someone like that is just bad. There's some lines you shouldn't cross and she definitely did.

Edit:
To expand I will say this; Kyon's actions were primarily motivated by seeing Mikuru abused like that and it did seem selfish on the surface. However you can't blame him for finally snapping after all they'd been through; bossed around, forced to pay for food, made to carry stuff, made to go along with whatever absurd idea she's got 'cause she's god and shit will happen'. But when you start throwing people into lakes, spiking their drinks and hitting them on the head while they cry then saying 'she's a toy i can do whatever i want', a simple shaking of shoulders isn't enough. If i was in Kyon's position i dunno if I coulda controlled myself. Is punching her the 'right' thing? No. But did she deserve it? Yeah, she had it coming

People keep saying it's the bobbing on Mikuru's head that made Kyon snap, but I think it's all the stuff she forced Mikuru into doing and the way she's treated her since they first met that finally made him go "enough is enough".

The problem with Haruhi is what others said before: she gets away with everything, because most of the SOS members fear it will have grave consequences if they oppose her. I think it's pretty obvious that Mikuru doesn't like the way she's being treated by Haruhi most of the time, but of what she believes Haruhi to be, she swallows it. No one dares to step up and tell Haruhi to tone down her erratic behavior and as such, she keeps pushing the limits. Kyon is watching all this go by without anyone doing anything and it pisses him off and eventually, all that built-up rage has to go somewhere - Haruhi's face preferably.

I don't really care what Haruhi's motivation for treating Mikuru as a toy is. If she's jealous of her, especially considering that Kyon seems to be quite fond of her too (though that might mostly be mere sympathy for her being treated as a toy rather than true affection), she could've found better ways at showing that than abusing her in every possible way. What Kyon pretty much wanted Haruhi to understand is that there are things she can't get away with, even if all the others don't stand up. And if the scenes after that are any indication, I think that message got through to her quite clearly.

Yes, Haruhi is the product of her own environment. But that's because no one ever gave her any backtalk, let alone a slap on the wrist if she screwed up and as a result, she doesn't know her own limits. It doesn't serve as an excuse to justify her behavior whatsoever. She does more harm than good to those she supposedly cares about (and Mikuru in particular), so there HAS to be someone to put her back in place and that role has befallen on Kyon. His reaction (to me) is perfectly understandable and justified.

And the "guys should not hit girls" statement is a load of bull, but I won't go into that.

Exactly my point. Pretty much said everything else I was thinking of.

THIS SCENE! Damn! this Kyon x Haruhi thing really bothers me to some extent because Kyon is always drolling over Asahina, and why does he do everything Haruhi tells him to do? Sometimes it seems like Kyon is this secret love for Suzumiya, then it seems he is soo deep into the friendzone, but then I remember I was a teenager once and say oh shit so whatever, fuck this series

One of my favorite moments in the series. Haruhi thought she wanted everything, but realized it was all pointless if she didn't have Kyon. She's in no hurry to make their relationship romantic, but when she thinks she's about to lose him, that's her last ditch effort. The movie, the Brigade, aliens, time-travelers, espers... none of it matters without Kyon. So get the ponytail going, girl, and hold on to Kyon any way you can. That's what that scene means.
The light novels expand on this concept nicely, if not overtly.

Also, yes, Haruhi was exhibiting Spoiled Child Syndrome very strongly here. This is what a lack of discipline does to a person. And if my analysis of Haruhi's character is anywhere near correct, the simple fact that Kyon, in that moment, hated Haruhi was much more painful to her than a punch or slap could ever have been.
Kyon's motivation in this scene is much clearer in the novel, as well. He straight up tells the reader that if someone doesn't hit Haruhi she's going to grow up to be a worthless person that isn't good for anybody. It's literally what he is thinking at the height of his anger. Yes, he's upset about Asahina, but even at his angriest, his concern is for Haruhi. Interesting, eh?

When Haruhi called Mikuru a thing ("i don't have to tell you how i use things"), and later toy (though thing may actually be worse than toy..) she defintively deserved a slap. Not a fist though. And whether boy or girl doesn't matter. Neither does age when everyone is the same, or once you're an adult.

why the hate on Kyon? he's just concern on how Mikuru is treated...if you were in here place..would you like to be treated as a toy? He's just pointing out to her...that there a limit to everything...I don't mind from the previous episode and from the previous season that she's pushy, bossy and a bit annoying, but her what she is doing is too much...but if she goes on like that..she'll be an asshole for the rest of her life... Kyon just wants her to be considerate a little bit...if she doesn't realize this...this will make her a dis-likable character to the end...I was expecting Haruhi to apologize to Kyon for her behavior at the end, nothing happened...i guess she is a narcissist after all... Kyon was the one who approach her, it's like he was the one to apologize...meh..nevermind...that was lame....

To defend her, she IS God so she doesn't really know it but things have been going her way just because she wished for it.

From what i understood (forgot some info) the reason they are making a movie is because she wanted this weird group together, so she probably wanted a "toy" and it just happened.

But yeah she is selfish.

"Taniguchi, you bastard! Thanks to you I've realized something, and I'm not happy about it!"

lol

Anyway, the drama in this episode was WAY overblown. The scene Tsuruya's house was somewhat understandable; Haruhi was legitimately going crazy and had been mistreating Mikuru for awhile. I would've gotten pissed too, though Kyon almost knocking her ass out was most certainly extreme. However, that scene at the lake was dumb as bricks. Why so much drama just because Mikuru needs to fall into the lake for a movie scene? It wasn't even remotely a big deal.

Anyway, despite the overblown drama, this was definitely the most engaging episode of the season since episode 3.

I also noticed I'm a good bit like Kyon. Always grumbling and bitching inside my head, but kind of leaving it exclusively instead my head.

Yes, that's what it is. Haruhi's probably the most cringeworthy character I've ever had the displeasure to see in an anime. Not a punch, that's too much, but a humiliating slap on that egocentric face would have been nice to see.

damn I must be watching this show in chrono instead of aired order b/c the episodes i watched the numbers aren't corresponding to the ones on the forum xD (I'm supposedly on episode 9/14 but this thread says the episode is ep 13/14)

Well whatever thats the order that it was labeled where I watched it so I said to hell with it and just follow the numbers already there.

I originally decided to watch this show because its so famous and so many rave reviews of it (I watched Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebeop for simular reasons).

But anway, yeah, Haruhi has been very bitchy and controlling most of the anime. I don't like her much at all, its odd that so many people were raving about how unique and awesome she is when I first started considering watching this show .. guess its a matter of personal opinion.

I've liked Kyon a good bit, but the other characters and most of this anime are fairly forgettable in my opinion. Not nessesarily "bad" but nothing that great either, especially in light of the glowing esteem much of the anime community holds this show up to be.

Haruhi is a tyrant in this episode. Seriously, giving Asahina alcohol, hitting her consecutively, throwing her in a lake, calling her a toy... that's way too much. Sorta made me hate her in this episode, but nonetheless, she's still an interesting character.

I like what Kyon was trying to do, make her learn a lesson, but i disagree to physical abuse.

The extremely slow, tiring pace in following them solve every technicality about making that stupid movie from the first season after all that Endless Eight stuff? Haruhi DRUGGING a character so she can film someone taking advantage of them because they wouldn't otherwise agree to do the scene? Kyon literally wanting to beat her up for it?

Surprised so many people in this thread don't realize that a slap can be worse than a punch. Also - it's hard not to wince when reading all these "boys should not hit girls" in today's world. Equality means equality, so please do everyone a favor - don't set our progress back 50 years.

Also - Haruhi is a bitch in Sigh, contrary to people objecting, because that's exactly author's intent in Sigh, to teach her (and the readers) the lesson that people cannot act without bounds.

People also seem to have challenge understanding that just because a character pisses you off, it doesn't make that's a bad character. On the contrary, characters that generates emotions, whether good or bad, are good characters. She's on my fav list precisely due to every facet of her, including her bitchiness.

Excellent tension in this episode. 5/5.

The best Haruhi episode so far, and one of the greatest in anime if you'd ask me. Not much was actually said outright, but it told you so much about the relationship between Kyon and Haruhi.

I was genuinely shocked when he was about to hit her, and quite sad to see how shocked Haruhi was as well. Unlike some, I don't think he should have. She was a downright bitch, but trying to hit her said more about him than about her.

Actually the last episode of season one took place before this one. Haruhi about to make a ponytail in this episode was to show that she wanted to get Kyon to look at her again, but he beat her to it and "apologized".

True, but most off all though, I think Haruhi was really upset about how he undermined her jealousy. He's identified her flaw even though he probably doesn't realize it's jealousy because of himself.
