I have to say, Ayame's store looks kinda fun to spend time in. They even have a maid there!

On a serious note, I do find his relationship with Yuki to be somewhat complex. At this rate, I wonder how much depth well learn more about the other Zodiacs. Ayame on most parts still seems like an easygoing character. Glad to also see a bit of Mine this episode.

Love to see Kyo doing muscle training in his room!

And I'm wondering if the Souma curse which is yet to be revealed will justify everyone's harsh treatment against zodiac.

I'm starting to like Ayame a lot. He really does care about Yuki.

A lot of funny moments in this episode.
Yuki's romance moment... Ayame just had to interrupt it lol.

Ayame is still the best bro. Best bros know how to embarrass their siblings in front of their crushes. Joke aside, both Yuki and he are very lucky to have each other.

By the way, what's the relationship between Ayame and the maid employee? They seem pretty close.

I kinda wanna say he's a great wingman, though, whether it's unintentional or not.
While I don't think how he treated Yuki back then in the flashback will completely be healed, I truly think the way he is right now is his way of perhaps making up for it. Idk, maybe I'm reading the situation wrong :P.

No, you're reading that right. Ayame realized that how he treated Yuki and isolated him was wrong so he's trying to fix that by being there for Yuki now.

This was probably one of my favourite episodes of the show so far. For me at least, season 1 often struggled with its comedy, not just in terms of making it funny but also in effectively balancing it with the show's darker content. This episode, however, pulled off that balance perfectly by using both of those facets to inform Ayame's character and his conversation with Yuki in the shop.

It's plain to see that, in at least some capacity, his overexuberance is a coping mechanism of sorts, a distraction from the realities of the Soma family situation. His ownership of the shop, and creation of the clothes within, is an extension of that, escaping from the control of the Somas by creating and, in a sense, "controlling" something himself. It's a different approach to what Yuki has done so far and that's just fine; Yuki being able to admit that they just don't see eye-to-eye on a lot of things is a crucial step in their relationship and, for Yuki, a crucial step to moving on from his childhood situation.

Also, I think Tohru would've looked better in a more colourful dress. The symbolism and allusions of an all-white dress aren't lost on me, by any means, but I just think it looks too plain on her, whereas something more colourful would really suit her. Not like it matters at all, but that's my view anyway.

So we finally get the Ayame's shop episode (chapter 36), which I thought would be funnier, like in the old anime. They combined it with chapter 47 (and changed half of it, which is sad, but can't be helped since they need to combine and rearange different chapters in order to use 2 chapters in 1 episode). So it had funny moments but serious moments too.

The funny moments are IMO always funnier in the old anime, and the soundtrack is always better too, such a shame.

In the next episode we get to see
again, and it will be chapter 43 (plus maybe another chapter? 48?). After that we finally get to meet
, can't wait. <3 And then comes the Beach arc.

Yet again this anime has both warmed my heart and shattered it! Some hilarious comedic scenes and some that made me choke up.

I think if I was Yuki, there would be a part of me that wouldn't be able to forgive Ayame for turning his back on me as a child, but I'd still accepted that he must have had a tough life too and is trying to make up for all the mistakes he made. There's is a complicated relationship!

Everytime I watch an episode of this show, the more I feel isolated and presume my heart is really cold. Cause I feel genuinely nothing whenever I see these episodes, maybe a little cringe here and there sadly. This episode did not change my mind, and I feel like idk, the start of this season is weaker than the first one.

Much like the past couple episodes, this one combines a couple manga chapters that are at different points of time and integrate their events together to fit the anime episode's narrative for a specific plot focus. In this instance, Chapters 36 and 47 focusing on the strain that Yuki has in his relationship with Ayame. Here were differences I noticed from this episode:

-Throughout Chapter 36, Tohru still had part of her neck bandaged up from the injury she received from Kyo’s true form in Chapter 33. Due to this episode’s events happening a bit later than this for the anime, Tohru doesn’t have said bandage on here.
-Ayame’s tearing and mending of Yuki’s shirt was originally depicted later in Chapter 47. Here, it was used to transition Chapter 47’s events into those from Chapter 36.
-A few changes to note with Yuki confessing to wanting to visit Ayame’s shop in the manga…

  • This scene originally took place as a flashback in the manga just as Tohru and Yuki arrived to Ayame’s shop.
  • When Yuki had admitted he wanted to visit Ayame’s shop in the manga, Shigure was taking a bath before an excited Ayame went into a rambling about the developments.
  • When Ayame went to call Hatori about the news, he called using a landline phone instead of a cellphone.

-The anime had an extended showing of a number of the fetish clothing that Ayame makes for his customers.
-Mine’s reaction to seeing Tohru when her “habit” kicks in was a little more exaggerated for the anime, with small huffs of air coming from her nose alongside her glasses glowing.
-Ayame and Yuki’s conversation for the anime actually combines bits from both conversations they had with one another in Chapters 36 and 47 to integrate Yuki’s hesitance over informing his parents about his upcoming parent-teacher conference and the strain he has in his current relationship with Ayame. Here was how these were different in the manga:

  • For Chapter 36’s conversation, Ayame was inquiring about Yuki recently becoming student council president and Yuki expressing his frustration about his older brother’s self-absorbed attitude. This led to Ayame reflecting on the regret he had for not being around for Yuki when he was being neglected by their parents. This part of their conversation is covered in the second half of the anime’s take on the scene.
  • Chapter 47’s conversation originally was set in a forest when Yuki was planning to go to his “secret base” to get some peas before realizing Ayame followed him. This one focused on Ayame learning of his brother’s parent-teacher conference and the hesitance Yuki had about contacting his parents about it. Throughout much of the scene, Ayame was in his snake form as he transformed due to his body getting fatigued from being out in the sun. A good number of the lines from this conversation were used for the first half of the conversation scene with Yuki and Ayame for the anime.
  • The flashbacks from both of these conversations with Ayame noticing a young Yuki and their mother together, turning away his brother, and showing regret for this to Mine were combined together from both chapters for this episode.

-The scene showing Mine brushing Tohru’s hair was added for the anime.
-Yuki and Ayame’s arguing at the end of the episode was extended a bit for the anime.

I was hoping S2 would have new content, but this is a spitting image of an eps from the original 2001 show. Can't complain I guess as its a nice episode with good character relationship development and feel good vibes while they reflect on what used to be and imagine what can be. Tohru being the catalyst to it all. And looking very cute dressed up.

It is. The content from episodes 20 (Tohru and Yuki's visit to Aya's shop) and 22 (Yuki Fan Club inquiring about female student council members) of the 2001 adaptation were the only ones that weren't adapted for last year's series.

Fruits Basket is at its best when it isn't trying hard to be funny. Ayame himself feels like a bit a much. Yuki said it better than I could, about how he says and does too many "unnecessary" stuff, but I guess I will just have to take it all in like Yuki is trying to do, all this "flair" is part of who Ayame is at this point. Though it makes it hard to take him seriously. I like that Yuki really isn't running away anymore by the way. He is trying to face what he needs to face, even his brother. I understand why they were so distant since Ayame looked away from Yuki and pushed him away when he truly needed him. But Yuki is healing, or at least making an effort to, and Ayame really seems to care about him now so how can I not hope for them to get along well? Indifference does hurt, but it isn't too late for them. I mean, the damage is done, but there's still a future. Mine also seems like a nice person who cares about Ayame, and Tooru looked pretty cute in that dress. I hope Yuki will find out what he wants to do, and muster the strength he needs to deal with his "parents".

Wonderful episode! The usual roller coaster - laughing so much one minute and then the next minute feeling so sad for what these boys have been put through. Ayame is hilarious - I love him! I’m glad he’s determined to support Yuki now, even if he has an odd way of showing it, lol. And I totally cracked up at Shigure dying laughing over the embroidery on the shirt and then lecturing Yuki about it.

I'll make this simple. This episode was the most heartwarming for Ayame and Yuki. The dynamic between the brothers, who are so close by blood but so far in personality, is refreshing to see raw and the episode just goes to show how Yuki and Ayame are opening up their worlds with considerable help by the women by their sides. I love it.

Loved this episode as always! I heard next week's episode will be even better. Anyways, it's always a treat to see Ayame terrorize Yuki. I love seeing Yuki get upset, it shows that he is human with normal human emotions.

LOL at Yuki saying "It's coming! It's coming! I don't know what it is but it's coming!" when Ayame ran towards him in a bridal gown. I feel like this version was funnier than the original since this is more solemn and the comedy that comes out of nowhere and attacks while the original version, although it was also good in its own way, was more comedic with drama thrown in.

Beforehand I didn’t really like Ayame, but i’m honestly slowly liking his character and I really want to see more of what Yuki and Ayame’s past was like.
Also holy shit did Yuki and Tohru have another prince and princess moment or what? Yuki the ultimate flirt. Also I watched the English dub version (Sue me, attack me, I don’t care) and Eric Vale seemed to give Yuki way more emotion than usual in his voice. I don’t know if that was me, but Yuki certainly sounded more different and confident? Not too sure, but we move, episode 4 next week not entirely sure if we are getting a 4th episode in dub, I feel like its going to be delayed, so probably going to have to watch sub next week. The ayame shop visit episode is here and there is finally nothing left to cover from the original !!
I think they mixed the 2 chapters they covered
really well and I especially love how they combined the flashback scene.
However I will still miss all the funny moments (mostly ayame) that had to be cut to fit the chapters together.
One cool detail that I'm kinda disappointed they did not explain in the episode is the fact that peaches and crabs were yuki's favorite foods when he was little and that's the reason ayame brought it to them as gifts. It was another attempt to connect with his brother!

Ayame and the maid would be really cute together! xD Haven't read the manga so i don't know what their relationship is besides coworkers/friends, but i can see it happening!

Anyhow another great episode from fruits, looking forward to the development we'll probably see from Yuki and his parents!
