For some context; I decided to start watching precure. I picked a season and I’m having fun with it. There is a problem though. Maybe this is because I grew up as a boy to man but I feel like I’m a creep for watching and enjoying such a juvenile piece of girl’s media.

My question is do or did any of you feel this way when you watch/watched magical girl anime?

You do you my man, don't feel weird about anything you like, that's part of you so embrace it, show it with pride at the end other people will admire that about you trust me. Sailor moon for life.

I don't since I am a girl, though I suppose I am a bit too old for most of them, lol. They still make a lot of merch targeted at adult women for the older shows, at least, so I don't feel too weird.

You shouldn't feel ashamed though, there's a lot of excellent magical girl anime (and shojo in general) and you'd be missing out otherwise.

Yeah there are some really good magical girl anime out there. I remember as a kid I would sneak and watch do re mi and Tokyo mew mew on Saturday mornings. Good times.

Fun fact, I’ve never seen sailor moon, lol. And the thing being I end up watching anime in public a lot so that’s where my worry comes from. People already treat me like a pedophile for looking at power ranger toys and buying Pokémon cards.

People’s perceptions can be rough but I atleast know my friends and loved ones probably won’t think poorly of me for watching precure.

Yes unless it's madoka magicka. Madoka is a gem and deserves all the praise it gets.

I'm not a believer in artificially limiting oneself by making all of your speech and mannerisms, thoughts, actions, hobbies and behavior and lifestyle conform with whatever arbitrary standard set for whichever biological sex or age. I think that just impoverishes humanity by making us all like robots. We should strive to rise above our coding and not always reinforce it. I possess and want and intend to exercise the free will to like whatever I like, pursue whatever I want to pursue in my life. I felt that at eight years-old, I feel that at 28, and I'd like to feel that at 78 if I'm alive. Age and male/female has nothing to do with it. Why willingly handicap my free will?

Well truly, I don't feel any weird as I just watch it as some other normal girl.

Yeah, kinda. That's why I have a bit of trouble sharing Madoka/Sailor Moon posts on Facebook or even saying I'm watching a shoujo anime, although those are related to how others could see me.

Still, I sometimes feel strange...

I consider it unhealthy to be bound by thoughts like that. If you feel like there is enjoyment to be had watching something then you should let yourself fully enjoy it. It doesn't matter what the image of you watching it would like to anyone else, It's only weird if you're enjoying it for reasons you think are weird.

I'm watching Precure and I'm loving it because it's got really fun and colourful characters that make my day and there's nothing wrong with that.

In that sense you should feel also creepy for watching Transformers, Pokémon, Yugioh, Beyblade etc or any animated medium
You'll be considered a manchild

Kids TV is now full of Barbie Princess movies and series like MLP:Friendship is Magic and magical fairylands, rainbows and unicorns. They also show Glitter Force (Smile Precure!)

We had Candy Candy, the most popular anime ever broadcast here, and it was a 100 episode shojo drama
Watched also by adults and families.

No TV program will tell you not to watch it

If you feel weird watching Princess Tutu, that just means you're not man enough to appreciate its greatness.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

True and precure is really nice after work. Simple stories with colors and positivity do good for the brain.

This is definitely a well written response. I hope to more comfortable with my hobbies some day. Well my living situation has helped me be more open about them but that was a different thread, lol.

Nah, I just watch what I want; you shouldn’t let other people’s opinions get to you. If you enjoy watching something then that’s what matters! :) I’ve had lots of practice because I’m a brony and I’m pretty open about the fact that I watch My Little Pony. But I get it man, sometimes it can be embarrassing but whatevs.

Can’t say I’ve ever felt that way for magical girl shows though. I saw a Precure show a few years back; it was actually the first anime I ever watched. It wasn’t so much that it was girly but what bugged me was the simplicity and repetitiveness. Just recently I watched Madoka Magica and I thought that was incredible! I’ve always liked the genre but Madoka takes a kiddie genre and flips it on its head. I’ve been meaning to watch Sailor Moon but haven’t gotten around to it yet. If you go to anime conventions you’ll see magical girl stuff everywhere so it’s certainly nothing to be ashamed about.

Nah, I don't.

Maybe it'll feel odd in a "what if other people see me doing this" way, but once you understand that you're watching it for your own fulfillment, that feeling will go away I guess.

Besides, there's quite a few non-creepy reasons to watch Precure. Precure shows have nice action and also a number of great character moments, some of which can be pretty emotional.

Honestly it's sort of a shame that adult stuff, particularly for guys, tends to eschew bright pretty colors.

Yeah, quite understandable. Can't blame you if you find the characters likable enough to keep you watching and enjoying the said show.

Such reasons why My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic also attracted an older demographic than it was initially intended the audience for. The show's wholesome.

Hey, I also enjoyed Cardcaptor Sakura and Fancy Lala, man.

I don't get what the OP is talking about.

Is there are a written rule that 100% of the time you should associate yourself with the MCs?
You don't need to even remotely relate to them.

In the case of mahou shoujo you just watch some kids doing magical stuff, how can this be weird?
Maybe boring and uninteresting if you don't appreciate such shows but weird in which way?

And yes some shows like Prisma☆Illya does feel unconformable because of all the yuri and other unnecessary and stupid sexual fanservice stuff...but I think Percure shouldn't be one of those.

You're the one who knows what your intent is with watching it. Do you just feel like a creep, or are you actually being a creep? If you're just watching them just to have a good time then don't worry about it, just have fun. Your opinion is what matters most when it comes to entertainment, doesn't matter what others think of it. The public perception of just watching regular anime is already piss poor and correcting it is an uphill battle, enjoying something like a magical girl show isn't really that much different than the usual to be quite honest, at least not to others.

No, but I felt a little weird while watching sansha sanyou, tamayura and kiniro mozaic. There are no boys in the anine except for one guy in sansan, I watched it because it had some sort of a nice atmosphere and all was good in the world, no depression, no bad stuff. So the anime did its job.
I grew up watching sailor moon with my sister and her girl friends, those were fun times and I'm currently rewatching it since 2016, now I'm on the final season (when everything went garbage imo).

Magical Girl anime is just as legit as any other genre. There's a lot of variation within it, and not all magical girl anime is the same. To each their own, y'know? I like magical girls a lot too. People who insist no one is allowed to enjoy media outside their demographic have huge sticks up their asses. And though this doesn't really apply to Precure, there are plenty of magical girl series out there created specifically for teens/adults.

Saying dudes can't like magical girls is like saying girls can't like sports or shounen. Genres are for everyone and nobody should tell you what should/shouldn't tickle your fancy.

Not the slighest. I'm an old, male, straight fart and people consider it weird that I watch anime regardless if I watch stuff for 13 year old boys or 13 year old girls. I'm decades too old for either, so the original demographic target group is irrelevant.

Actually, as per MALGraph, my highest ranked demographic genre is (correctly) Seinen, but then in order: Shoujo, Josei, Shounen (the latter with a huge rank gap). Yup, I was suprised too.

Nah fam. Everyone close to me pretty much knows that I am fan of Precure. Even when my sister ordered some Japanese candies and there was Precure one she gave that to me lol. Anyway I watch also magical girl shows with my younger relatives and if anyone is ready to talk about Winx club I am here for that too, because I am unshamefully long time fan of that series.

Yeah and men have been creating magical girl shows since the 60's. Even in the 70's there were magical girl shows that targeted both girls and boys.

Not really. I liked Pretear, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Princess Tutu and Flip Flappers. However the magical girl series that I found tasteless were magical girl ore, Cute High Earth Defense Club series and Is This a Zombie?. Not that I have offense on dudes taking over the magical girl genre which is good. However I find that they don't take the dudes trying out the magical girl roles seriously.

I'm a girl, grew up watching a lot of Sailor Moon, but I'm twenty-two and just starting to get into precure. It's a really cute, fun show, but I would rather die than have any of my family members know I watch it... I also feel weird for watching/enjoying a show meant for little girls that I didn't grow up with. I wish there were decent English dubs so that I could at least make the excuse of watching it with my younger cousins.
Like I love shoujo and mahou shoujo so I don't intend to stop watching precure any time soon but I do feel a certain amount of embarrassment over it.
