When ranking your favorite anime....how do you deal with series with multiple seasons?

Ok, so....my favorite anime of all time is the "Monogatari" series.

And by that I mean the ENTIRE Monogatari series....this includes all the seasons, the OVAs, and now the Movies.

However, I know not everyone does that....in fact many of you people will only rank ONE season.

Which always makes me a little confused since most anime that have multiple seasons means that the first season was simply the beginning....and the story is simply going along in the following seasons.

Also, what happens when season 2 sucks?

If you're like me that likes to rank the ENTIRE series...the that means the series just took a blow and maybe is no longer in your "top 10" or whatever...

Also....do you rank arcs?

For example, almost EVERYONE says the first arc of Bleach was the best one and is the main reason why Bleach became so popular....but the show went downhill after that.

So....if you have Bleach in your top favorite anime....do you rank the ENTIRE series?

or do you rank the first arc?

I mean...IF Bleach did have "Seasons" then maybe the first arc was simply "Season 1" and the other arcs the next seasons....

Anyways....I want to know what YOU think.

Well, I rank seasons as individual series.

Normally, I rate the first season, and just copy the rating to any sequels, OVAs and so on.
Occasionally, I have to adjust the score by a point if one season was better than the other. Usually I never do it for OVAs. Unless it's a "humorous" OVA that sucks, like Overlord: Ple Ple Pleiades.

When adding to favorites, I just add the first season. Occasionally, I add the season I actually liked the best. (it's for shows like Kara no Kyoukai)
When in doubt, I add the manga instead :D

If it doesn't have separate seasons then I rate is as a whole, if it does have then I rate the seasons separately.. For example the 1st season of Sidonia no Kishi is one of my favourite anime with a rate of 8, but I rated the 2nd season with 5 simply because it sucked compared to the 1st one. And it doesn't change the fact that the 1st season was ounstanding imo. I'm glad that I didn't have to rate this anime as a whole, it would be 6 then and it wouln't be my fav, just another wasted potential instead.

If I say Monogatari is my favorite anime, then I mean the whole series as a whole.
If I say Nisemonogatari is my favorite anime, then it should be implied the Monogatari series as a whole is not my favorite anime.

So if you look in my favorites, every show there is considered a top ten favorite, sequel seasons and all. The only thing I get confused about is figuring out which entry in the series to represent the whole series in the top ten list lol.

Thus far I haven't come across a series which would have too many seasons so I can't really answer that question. But when it comes to 2-3 seasons I just rank the one that I liked the most.

I'll consider all arcs grouped into a season as one whole anime while I consider seasons as different and rate them differently based on the content. Same goes to adding them to my list of favorites.

When ranking your favorite anime....how do you deal with series with multiple seasons?
Yes, i also go by "one franchise = one favourite slot"

Except for series with different casts per season like Macross.. but those are pretty rare

Also, what happens when season 2 sucks?
All of my favourites are self contained stories, or don't have significant differences between seasons

Also....do you rank arcs? So....if you have Bleach in your top favorite anime....do you rank the ENTIRE series? or do you rank the first arc?
Just like the fillers, arcs are the most relevant in long runners which i dont watch.

I prefer the term "franchise" or "anime series" when referring to the whole of a certain body of work.

As far as my Top 10 goes only one entry per franchise is allowed but it doesn't represent the franchise as a whole. If I were to rank franchises it would be a separate Top 10 Franchises list. One of these days I'll get around to doing that.

For example as much as I love the best parts of the Haruhi franchise I gave S2 a 2 (Endless Eight and The Sigh of ~ arcs). S1 was a 9 and the movie a 10. The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan I gave a 6. The movie is in my Top 10 (and S1 probably top 20) but it's hard to say where the franchise would land in a franchise list. Most franchises are much more consistent than Haruhi, however.

Re. arcs: they all contribute to the score (obviously longer arcs affecting the score more than shorter ones). Fillers still count though I give them less weight than canon material. It's just a matter of math for me -- if I had to watch it (even some filler shit) then it deserves to count in the score to some degree.

The season I like the most goes on my favorites representing both the whole franchise and my favorite part of it.

And if in doubt (aka I have no clear favorite part) I just go with the first season.

I never use more than one spot on my favorite per franchise and it's also very rare that I start out loving a franchise bt hate the latter parts. I'm a loyal fan so I don't have to worry about that most of the time.

There are series where the second season are basically the continuation of the first season and there are second seasons that are an entirely different product so it depends on the anime.

My favorite anime is Aria and I put the third season in my favs since it's my favourite but it represents the franchise as a whole.

I would put Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid on my favs but that would only represent that specific season since it's very different in quality from the first one which I don't like.

Madoka:
I rate the series as 10 because it's GOAT.
I rate the first movies lower because they are remakes with inferior quality that don't up anything signficant.
I rate the third movie 3 because it's absolute fucking dogshit steaming pile of feces.

When rating franchises every part gets its own take, but usually their scores don't differ that much from the original, except if they completely ruin its story/characters/ideas: usually shitty fanservice OVAs and movies. ^
Of course, they are different entries with its own score and usually the first one is the best. Different arcs are part of the same series, so rating it higher just because of 1 good arc is bad fanboyism.

Nothing stops you from putting all parts in your favorites though, if you really think they are that good.

> When ranking your favorite anime....how do you deal with series with multiple seasons?

I as well take into account the entire series (aka the main story), and not necessarily the whole franchise. For example: i love the NGE series, but if i was gonna take in consideration the rebuilds im pretty sure i would had to raked it lower in my favorites list.

> Also, what happens when season 2 sucks?

If the second season ruined everything that the first one established then yes i will rank it lower, however that is not necessarily the norm. For instance, i believe that Code Geass R2 was overall step back in quality in comparison to the first season, but R2 still did a great job concluding the series and as such i decided to rank the whole series higher wait until season 3 ruins that...

> Also....do you rank arcs?

No i don't rank arcs. I might state it that a certain arc was better then another, but like i said before i take more into account the entire story.

I used to give the same score to all the seasons, but I stopped doing it.
When I start the second season I give it the same rating the first season had, and if it gets better I increase it and if it gets worse I decreases it.
The only exceptions are SOL anime with no story, if they are really funny they will always get a 8/10 and Gintama because it's too epic to give it something less than 9/10.

I rank each season on it's own merit, though things like characterization and overall plot development are rated more-so on how they continued the job started in the prior season rather then starting from Block 0.

Simple: Pick the best one. Even when a series shouldn't by any means count as multiple seasons (lookin' at you, Fate/Zero, Unlimited Blade Works, and Black Lagoon).

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.

I rate each series entry individually but usually end up with a biased last season cuz of plot/character development, climax/conclusion. In case of multiple seasons/entries, I'd only pick one to put in my favorites and mostly go for the most satisfying/memorable one.

That's very difficult sometimes. My account is new, so I keep adding such animes you spoke about.

BUT, its foolish and ignorant to see all seasons as same. It is very rare that a season is on the same level as the former one. What do I want to say?

Rate each season individually and if asked for your TOP 10 for example, you add how some said the ending franchise or series.

Example: 1) Initial D series
2) Legends of the Galactic Heroes series
3) Mobile Suit Gundam franchise

(The difference between franchise and series is that a series contains the same universe or characters for some seasons while a franchises plays in different universes. Meaning a franchise is made up of many series.)

I love Mushishi, I have rated 10/10 every Mushishi show but I have only included the first Zoku Shou season in my favorite and I feel as it represents the entire franchise.

I love Sidonia no Kishi 1st season too but I didn't enjoy 2nd season as much. That reflects badly on the first season which is currently on my top 10 favorites.
Because of the Sidonia's 2nd season, the 1st season now is the weakest link in my top 10. If I watch another anime good enough to want to add to my favorites, Sidonia 1st season will have to go and that's the 2nd season's fault.

I deal with this in different ways. First, I ask: is it a direct sequel? I treat direct and indirect sequels differently. For a direct sequel, if everything is consistent, obviously I can give them all the same rating. However, if a sequel is worse (or better), I'll do one of two things.

1] Give the sequel a lower or higher number and list them separately on my ratings page (linked in my signature).

2] Average the score for each entry in the series and list all of them together.

I'm not entirely sure how I choose which one to do for what kind of series. I think it just depends on whether I want to highlight the differences between each entry or not. As for arcs, well... I guess if they're really distinct, I might rank them, but I still consider them as part of the whole series. So, for example in Hunter x Hunter, I don't consider the arcs consistently good, but I still loved it the whole series in general, so I gave it a 9/10.

I don't commit to long runners unless I am sure I will like them in the first place. For placing in favorites, I usually stick to the first title in the series unless I consider one of the sequels to be a standout.

I rate all seasons of an anime individually, but I will say that the events of the first season will affect my rating of the second season if the second season directly continues from the first. So if season 2 is bad, then I will give it a lower rating than the previous season *cough* Tokyo Ghoul *cough*.

As for rating arcs, if there are multiple arcs in a single season, I do not rate the arcs individually and rate the season as a whole with consideration of both arcs. For example, Sword Art Online has multiple arcs, but I rate it as a whole.

Now when it comes to favorites, I usually put the first season on the list, but I make exceptions. I put Slayers Next and Yama no Susume 2nd season in my favorites instead of the 1st seasons because of the huge jump in quality from season 1 to season 2. I like the Monogatari series too, but I couldn't decide which to add to my favorites, so I chose Koyomimonogatari because it gathers all of the major characters from all of the arcs and groups them together. Symphogear is the big exception here. Season 2 is actually my favorite, but I posted Season 1 on my favorites list which is often regarded as the worst season. This is just a little ploy of mine to get people to click on it to see what it is about because of how niche the series is. Also, the cover on season 2 is a bit of a spoiler, so I don't want to have that posted on my favorites list.

I view each show as a whole rather by season. If a show with multiple seasons is a favorite I rank the first season with the intention of it representing everything I've seen that the show offers. If I see a later season and don't like it the show as a whole is bumped down. I wouldn't want a favorites list with multiple seasons of the same show listed...it's a bit boring, I'm sure both to read and to create.

As for me I'd say, if the first season of a series was amazing that I place it in my top 10 but the 2nd season was bad, it all depends on how I'd value that 2nd season. It's not like you can't enjoy a bad show after all, so if I enjoyed a bad season of a series, that wouldn't make me change it from my top list at all.

It would have to be absolutely bad for make to change it's position or take it out of the list tbh.

I usually rate anime based on the quality of the seasons, but when discussing quality of a show, I include the multiple seasons.

For example, two of my favorite anime of all-time are Clannad and Little Busters. Yes, the second seasons (After Story and Refrain) were far superior to the first seasons of the show, but I include both seasons when talking about them as a franchise because they would be incomplete without both seasons.

I rank/rate them they way mal since we're using mal, lists them.

Now uptill ep 122 of Fairytail [if we take that as the last ep] FT is a perfect 10. but then we get a shitty time skip. and whike I still enjoyed the rest of fairytail, it was far less then the 1st 120 o0r so eps. and its 3 seasons or so. but since mal has it listed as one series of 175 eps instead of 3 or 4 seasons, I rated it as a whole, the last few eps bringing the score down to a final 8.

the next is about 102 eps including ft zero, which is not really the same and I have only watched one season of it so I scored it as complete despite having watched only 50 eps, and scored it accordingly. will watch the remaning eps and update score and list accordingly.

I usually just put the first season of a series to represent the whole franchise on my favorites, even if it's not necessarily my favorite. I like SAOII more than SAO, yet SAO is the one on my favorites. Zero no Tsukaima F is my favorite season of ZnT yet I have the first season on my list as my favorite.

I don't even know why I do it like that, I just feel like it's a better placeholder for the whole series since that's what its meant to represent, I guess. I never really thought about it until now, admittedly.

Now if anyone wants to know if it's the whole franchise or just a season he'll have to search my list. I do a sort of a hybrid. I don't rank by franchises yet I don't treat seasons as separate from a series (using TV series as the base and not movies) unless
1) Made by different studio even if the time between the prequel and sequel "flows" continuously (ie Durarara!! vs Durarara!!x2 and Gunslinger Girl I vs Gunslinger Girl II)
2) Two years or more have elapsed between the prequel and the sequel where the prequel doesn't have a concluding timeskip (ie Digimon; Dragon Ball franchises). The ones with timeskip near the end and then have a sequel are ranked as one (ie JoJo Bizarre Adventures (at least from what I've seen so far))

Fate/SN and Fate/SN UBW are treated separate even if they are alternative paths of the same story because of the studio difference. It's the easiest indicator for me without having to go out of my way to research every single staff member of every single entry.

If season 2 sucks, I incorporate that into my rankings. All TV series have a weighted average where the # of episodes determine the weight of the rating that I do when factoring in multiple seasons. Monogatari series would be a good example of this.

I rank by arcs if I can't come up with a rating number for the series or if the quality between one arc and another arc is so different that a weighted average by arc is necessary for me. Once there is a number, I then compare with other franchises/seasons through my hybrid method and adjust accordingly depending on how I feel.

It would be ridiculous to completely ignore a season or an arc or completely narrow only one arc whenever I rate something.
