Pretty good movie, I wasn't too fond of the first half because it was kind of repetitive and boring since all that happens is Makoto time leaping and going through the same day over and over with slight variations. The second half picked up though and I thought that was nice. Great movie overall :)

I just watxhed this anime movie for the first time and it was really good but I still have so many questions lingering in my head.

Why did Chiaki say: I'll be waiting for you. Did he come from the the near where baseball doesn't exist? What's with that painting?(I don't get it)
And what does Makoto want to become in the future. Why didn't she get her bike fixed after she experience death because of that. Are her brains still okay after falling so many times on her head? Was aunt Witch's boyfriend also from the future which is the reason she knew about time leaps?

Overrated. The story was good but the presentation got extremely repetitive. It was also tiring to adjust the volume every time they changed scenes.
Stop the sequels high-ranking stupidity.

This was OK. Don't think it was bad but I dont think it was that great either. Didn't really feel sad at all with the ending. MC and the characters were ok. Story in the first half got pretty repetitive and somewhat boring. Felt a bit convenient how Chisaki just so happened to only have one left and just decided to go back at the end of the movie instead of staying to see that painting.

Overall 6/10

I just rewatched it right now, and I'm surprised at how many scenes, especially the small, one second ones, all play into the whole story. I also noticed the amount of liberties taken with regards to explaining the time travel mechanic, but I appreciate how the time traveling was only a tool for the story, not a major element that needed to be explained fully. That wasn't the focus, and due to the 1 1/2 hour movie constraint, there wasn't a moment to spare. Rather than drowning the film with explanations, it spent most of its time appreciating the smaller, passable things in the characters' lives, which all added up in the end when they were forgotten and eventually regained after a long struggle.

This isn't my first rewatch actually, but because of that, it's wondrous to see that, over time, it has actually improved in my eyes.

great! 8/10 my favorite part of the movie was basically the VC for the MC she was perfect in doing the character and i love her voice in general.

however the moment when she was trying to save kousuke...why didn't she just immediately text him? and did her almost BF not exist in the first place since he left to the future? so he was never supposed to be friends with her in the first place?

well it's a storyline that involves time so undoubtedly there will be plotholes...

but seriously

Just rewatched it again and it got me wondering this time, do Makoto and Chiaki ever meet up again.

I read somewhere that the aunt in the movie is Makoto from the future and that she traveled back into time to see Chiaki again because Chiaki and her older self didn't get to meet when her time finally invented time travel. However, seeing her present younger self fall in love with Chiaki and time travel, she watches them as a memory; in order to not disrupt anything, her older self lies to her younger self saying that she's her aunt.

I wonder if reading the manga will get me more closure or if this is all there's to it.

Still a great movie.

Very good movie, but I am sad that they actually never met again. Same story as with Auntie Witch. I even think that Chiaki was the same person who was with Auntie Witch as that photo shows. And this is why Chiaki wanted to see that painting.

Also, it is nice that if Chiaki didn't lose his device then Makoto would die that day. She was saved by pure luck so she was lucky after all!

oh and I love this sentence "Time waits for no one" I think it was Chiaki who wrote it in that class.

At first I thought Chiaki could've been an immortal painter (like Flint in Star Trek) who travelled back in time so he could see his destroyed work...

So did Makoto mess up the cooking class in the final iteration of the timeline or was it the guy who got bullied as a result of her successes?

Hmm well I can't say I didn't enjoy it. It had decent animation and an intriguing plot despite the few unexplained things. I watched Wolf Children a few days ago which was a complete masterpiece and the fifth 10/10 I gave something. In retrospect it probably wasn't a good idea to watch The Girl Who Leapt Through Time so close to watching Wolf Children as it may have affected my enjoyment of the film. A little bit disappointed but still it's a 7/10 from me.

High on emotions, low on plot

I think I enjoyed the film much more due to its production (the animation here was really enjoyable to look at), and little things like how object bounced and collided. The score and how music was played in each scene was amazingly done. Some of the cinematography done was just uummmm....
Also, Makoto's character was really a joy to watch through.

Plotwise, I'm in dark as anyone else. There were many things left unexplained. I realized this after my emotional "high" came down.
However, I don't think this is the kind of movie where you look for plot. I mostly focused on delivering emotions, and I think it did that.

I give this about a 5 to 6, I feel meh about it. It wasn't as great as I thought it would be but not super terrible either. The repetitive parts gave me a headache/was annoying to watch. And I guess the characters are alright? Makoto looks so boyish that I forget she's a girl sometimes. As for the ending, I thought Chiaki was going to kiss Makoto! Not liking the ending so much because I was left confused somewhat and there's so much unexplained things here.

The ending is what made the movie good for me, kinda a depressing ending because obviously makoto never sees chiaki again from when he said "See you in the future" or something like that, he was like hundreds of years in the future so i doubt thats what happened, a couple things left unanswered and a little boring at times but im still gonna give it a 8/10 because i love time travel and the ending was pretty good :)

Oh anyone who was confused at the things left unresolved, go and check out the story of the original book, this is actually both a retelling and a sequel at the same time. At first I thought the aunt character was meant to be her from the future come back to do the painting but she's someone else (basically just go here they explain it in the first paragraph)

So yeah most of the confusing stuff is because people in Japan are more familiar with the original story. Anyway it was a really great film I loved it.

I believe her aunt went through the same things that Makoto experienced. Discovered the same time traveling device, then found out it actually belonged to one of the friends from her old photograph. Then the guy dissappeared. But why is she recovering and taking care of the painting? Maybe her old friend also wanted to find the painting, just as Chioko, and she found that out. Maybe he even told her that he was going to wait for her in the future, just as Chioko said to Motoko. That's why i think Matoko chose in the end to dedicate her future to the same profesion as her aunt. Well, this is mere speculation because the movie does not clarifies this completely and I have te watched any other material from this so.... Yep, it's a great movie :D - 9.5/10

The concept of time travelling could have been explained more rather than just saying,"People in the future managed to build such a device". The animation was pretty mediocre compared to various other anime movies I have watched. There were quite a few awkward scenes in the movie as well (for example- the scene at the end with Makoto running for like a minute with the VA panting like crazy, jeez that was pretty weird).

But the story was pretty heartwarming and simple. Thankfully, being a time travelling story, I didn't find major plot holes. The characters were all likable and I would have done the same things as Makoto if I ever discovered such a cool power.

Overall a 7/10.

I thought this was a pretty solid movie. If one of the weaker Mamoru Hosoda films. I particularly enjoyed when the movie was just having fun with its concept. All the inventive ways she used her powers were creative and really entertaining. I also thought the movie made good use of slapstick. There were multiple parts that had me laughing out loud of Makoto crashing into things.

So I guess where the movie loses it a bit for me is the ending. The explanation that Chiaki is a time traveler from the future, just did not work for me at all. It felt forced, half baked and genuinely tainted a film I was really enjoying up until then. Basically this wasn't my favorite Mamoru Hosoda movie. And it wasn't my favorite time travelling high school melodrama movie either. Still a pretty solid flick though.

Great movie, albeit leaving a few missing dots here and there!
It’s definitely one of the very few among time-travel based anime which is handled uniquely and hence very intriguing as a consequence. Despite the numerous plot-twists though, I still believe all of those were sudden and the timing for those were about point perfect.
While the storyline of it was pretty mediocre, I particularly enjoyed the approach it took to demonstrate the limitations and effects of each of the timeskips. A few of the additions here and there though, didn’t really add up well and so it was a little disheartening. Well, it was still excellent overall.
Moreover, the cast of characters seemed pretty bland as well to a certain extent but it was fine nonetheless and I thought it was decently done, if not great. As for the Sound Department and the Art, both were really well done and I especially liked the time travel effect it displayed through the catchy animation. Enjoyment was definitely above par and so it was a great watch after a tiresome and stressful exam session. Lol, anime really does help in this regard.

Personally though, I’m a little saddened that we did not get to see as much of Chiaki x Makoto as Yuri x Makoto scenes or much of Kousuke x Kaho since both of those looked like some really good potential developments. Well, it’s understanable nevertheless since the focus of this show was never the romance bit unfortunately. On another note, it was nice to see this show being realistic and not all merry-going.
Makoto’s shocking revelation, though, was lit and out of the blue. When he first asked her about whether or not she was time leaping, I just jumped up out of shock but, xD, Makoto’s reaction to that wasn’t half-bad. It’s also a bit disappointing that we never really get to know about that drawing. I found it a little odd though considering Makoto’s aunt was very fond of that too, perhaps just a blooper but I’m guessing it has something to do with time-traveling anyway.
Makoto’s sister scene where Makoto was about to commit ‘suicide’ and the caring apologetic side of her came out, was just great and hilarious! Loved those family scenes, truly a pleasant welcome.

All in all, this was a great and wonderful show. Steins;Gate easily tops this however, but this too has its own speciality.

Storyline/Plot Development: 8/10
Characters: 8.5/10
Sound Department: 9/10
Art/Animation: 9/10
Enjoyment: 9.5/10

=> Overall: 8.8/10.

I wonder, when he said that he will be waiting for her in the future, how does that work? Was it just to give her some hope to sweeten the pot and they will always have this great huge age gap between them (hell, maybe Makoto will be long dead before Chiaki is born) or is it actually possible for them to meet again and have a second chance?
I would really appreciate it if someone could clear it up.

Hmmmm...that's it? Just a downer, star-crossed lovers ending? I expected more considering how long I put this off. This turned out to be more Groundhogs Day than Back to the Future, only much goofier. By the time it really decided to get serious with the Chiaki reveal , which admittedly was somewhat foreshadowed in hindsight, it was too late. Well I dunno....I guess they possibly could still end up together with a sizable age difference, but the future Chiaki described seemed rather shitty anyway. No baseball? No opened streams or rivers or whatever he said? This movie really left some disturbing undertones in its quest for a bittersweet ending. Plus I'm still not sure how the time travel exit points were chosen, at least not for Makoto. That must be some mad brilliant technology if she was picking her spots at will, but half the time it didn't seem like that. How clumsy feeling to me...I dunno. And I can't exactly take their love too seriously considering in one version she later cancelled Chiaki was starting to get together with Makoto's friend. Plus I wasn't a big fan of the art except the backgrounds which were just serviceable. That image of Makoto on the poster looked nicer than she actually did in the movie. Definitely disappointed by this, generous 7 out of 10.

Would've been nice for Chiaki and Makoto finding each other in the future as he promised. When I checked at the end of the credits Nada, just some stupid photo recaps. I loved this movie and Makoto was a brilliant indecisive character, that's she never got no kiss in the end.

Nonetheless it was fun but short, I wish it was longer for a 1:38 min movie.
