@joe_g7: Yes, it does, including unaired scenes. I've already mentioned about it in Drifter Sequel news. Also, I have to place One Piece Movie image there so that it won't be in weirder place than right now. |

I hope more and more anime like YaOI are made so that studios like MAPPA can survive in this time of recession. Tbh, it's very underrated for a gay anime. I mean, we are now in an era where gay stuff is considered revolutionary. Let's hope they make a sequel with Viktor and Yuri's babies. Even in the cover they look like they are mating, no? |

Its a good and a bad thing. Yes you can make (a lot) of money, but also this prevents normal anime being made that doesnt catter to one audience. And now imagine if all studios mostly if not all the time would make fujoshi bait, coz it sells and thats whats important right? When that happens you might as well declare anime as dead Im overreacting here ofc but i def dont wanna see 10 fujoshi bait anime out of 30 every season, if not more |

To be fair, some great series like Shirobako, keep selling really well (Like latest Blu Ray boxset) and while i love Flip Flappers, i know some people who didn't like it at all, especially first few episodes. |

People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime. Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait. MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol. |

I think what killed Flip Flappers was that it didn't look unique in promotional material at all. What I expected from the show is what I did not get, which isn't a bad thing, since what I got was better than what I expected, but so many people didn't even give the show a chance to begin with. If you didn't initially watch it because of the sakuga, there wasn't really much else to draw you in because the premise sounded basic and the mere possibility of shoujo-ai (unfortunately) doesn't draw in buyers like shounen-ai does. The story and characters are hard to even recommend to someone who hasn't watched the show because spoilers, and it doesn't help that the first few episodes make the show look like nonsensical adventures. Also, a lot of people probably hated Papika and/or Cocona based on earlier episodes, so that doesn't help, either. LOL at all the people who are still mad about Yuri on Ice getting sales, though, There is nothing disappointing about it. I guess because they aren't YoI's target audience. It's wonderful that a well-praised anime original from such a small studio is doing that well, and I hope that leads to more risks being taken by studios. It's also infinitely more accessible and easy to market than FliFla. It's the kind of show that people who don't typically follow seasonal anime still got into because it's a fun, well-written show that manages to take risks without alienating (too many) people. I just hope MAPPA gives themselves more time to animate season 2 because YoI's production itself was a trainwreck, as evident by the animation quality in later episodes. Animating so much figure skating was too ambitious. The Blu-Rays will probably fix a lot, but I worry that the sales will make them too confident so they'll rush out the next season with minimal regard for quality. I can't imagine that ever happening because YoI seems to be a passion-project, but on the business-side of production there are probably executives who are already pushing to get season 2 made ASAP just to capitalize on the hype as quickly as possible. |

I hoped FlipFlap would get at least 1k :( Haven't watched it (yet) but really wished it wouldn't flop so hard. Also waiting for that YOI v1 to close around 70k, 75k. A bit curious about how much it will drop on v2, tho. |

Sury said: I disagree with that statement. Like it or not, Yuuri on Ice WAS an ambitious show! It was original, figure skating... it very easily could have flopped. Fujoshi shows have done well lately but this season was PACKED with fujoshi shows! Those fans could easily have ignored YOI and just bought UtaPri, Touken Ranbu and Haikyuu!!! which are all known quantities being sequels or based on a very popular game.I nearly vomitted on my screen when I opened this thread. Ill chime in by saying Flip Flappers did not offer an exciting Blu-ray package. I am buying Hibike! Euphonium 2 or I would have tried to get Flip Flappers.(Which unless there is something I dont know about the chart, vol 1 of Hibike! Euphonium 2 completely sold out because I cant find it anywhere pretty much and it should still be on there somewhere for this week no?) If you care a lot about Flip Flappers, buy a volume of it. If the show does pick up a cult following later on, which it already somewhat has, they might retain a good chunk of their value. |

Sury said: First, if you watched the show (I did, and enjoyed it even though I don't generally watch fujoshi aimed shows) you would probably agree with me that the show wouldn't even have worked if it was gender swapped. The jokes only worked for guys, the story only would have worked for guys. hpulley said: Sury said: I nearly vomitted on my screen when I opened this thread. It's really worrying that every ambitious autumn show seems to flop. I'm pretty sure though it wouldn't have had the same success if it would have been a show about female's ice skating. Next, you're right. Yuri shows don't sell well lately so even if they'd changed the story completely so it would have worked with female figure skaters, it would have sold poorly. I'm quite certain of that though of course, it is impossible to say for sure. If Sakura Trick and Shakunetsu Takkyu Musume didn't sell then a female figure shaking show would not sell well today either. So... the people who made YOI gave themselves a good shot by making a show for a buying market they know exists! Nothing wrong with that. Just good business sense to make something you know could sell because the market for it EXISTS. Honestly, I loved Flip Flappers but it never had a chance in hell of selling well. The buyer's market for that show is tiny, as evidenced by the poor sales. I'm glad they made the show as I enjoyed it but honestly I don't know why they made it as they must have known that it would sell like dirt. Sad but true, the sales potential of Flip Flappers was practically zero from the start. I hope they made it as a work of art, not caring about how much it would make because honestly, it just had no chance of making any money at all. |

The problem isn't that YoI is selling, but that pretty much every single other show is flopping arount it, meaning most studios went in the red this autumn. And THAT, no matter if you liked yoI or not, is definitely NOT a good news for ANYONE. At least is appears in the top sales. Mahoiku for example didn't even show, lol. |

And THAT, no matter if you liked yoI or not, is definitely NOT a good news for ANYONE. ... Next, unless you meant "production committee" instead of Studio, your comment shows you don't understand how most anime works. Most studios are either at the bottom of the committee or are not even on the committee, with the exception of KyoAni this season. Studios not on the committee or at the bottom don't stand to lose any or much money though on the flipside, they don't stand to make much from a mega hit either. The more risk, the more money you pony up for the project, the more money you stand to make if it is a great success but also the more you stand to lose if it flops. And this is no different from when LoveLive or Monogatari or AOT dominate a season. No different at all. Why is this suddenly a problem because YOI may sell the most (UtaPri could still outsell it)? Nothing new. Nothing to see here. Move along... anime will survive. There will be moe shows and harem shows to see later. Not all shows will be about BL figure skaters just because of one successful show. I know it's fun to worry and complain but do try to be a bit more realistic with your predictions. |

Most of that list are NOT new shows, so the sales are nothing new nor something that is promising for the media. And yes, i meant production committee. Although the studio is pretty much always part of it, even if for a small part. And NO this isn't suddenly a problem. If that was a one season only thing, then in reverse that wouldn't be a problem. Like you said it's happening all the time, and that's why it's a problem. |
