Very interesting start for this story. Very brutal, very somber--and I imagine things will only become more troubling for our protagonist.

I quite like his voice acting.

I'm a book junkie (not necessarily literature), I usually read 2-3 per week (perhaps less, depending on its length). Sadly, my knowledge of authors from the Far East is scarce at best (can mention Yukio Mishima as my favorite though).

This episode was heaven for me since it conveyed with success what the author probably tried to convey to his audience. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Very nice first episode. The art is beautiful, characters are interesting, music is fitting and everything reeks of despair. I like the depressing tone and I'm looking forward to continuation of the story.

Yup, interesting episode so far. So I guess this is based on 'arcs' given by the title of the anime. Hmm...

Oh God, that scene at the restaurant was weird. Dat red dress. Reminds me of a little of Death Note. The scene on the cliff was uh, really strange.

I was looking to escape the world of lolis, chicks wearing maid costumes, ridiculous overpowered villains, gratuitous onsen episodes and girls punching their brother whilst shouting "onii-chaaann no BAKA!".

I feel this anime is the right place to do so, seeing how it's based on great japanese fiction and Madhouse's usual quality. This is is good stuff indeed.

Gosh I love the animation, the lighting looks so smooth. Why does the poster on mal look so modern though? Does this happen in different eras? I'm sure interested in his past.

I didn't get the women part, did they sexually molest him as a child or was that about all those women imposing rules on him?

Bump* glad others are still watching too!
animation 9/10
story 8/10 >>>>>>> only because as a westerner, we dont know the original literary works (story) as well... so i had to research it; to fully appreciate the episode.
Remember: Books are always better than the movie haha so don't judge the stories too harshly or too quickly!... most Japanese people already know these stories well.

For the last time... No they are not related (she's not his sister) she only said that to escape an annoying man.
Yes, he was molested by maids who were there to care for him. ALSO they are NOT his sisters.
This anime consists of several 'arcs' 'stories' so be prepared.

I've been meaning to watch this for years now but never got around to it. I came here straight after Death Parade because there were no more episodes currently out and I was craving more, after some simple thought processes, I went to watch this as I thought it'd be similar but this is definitely darker compared to death parade. LOL no ragrets.

Great first episode, the series looks promising. It's ironic how the MC wanted to take his life for having failed at everything in his life but eventually failed his suicide.

I like the despair. And holy crap I absolutely love the introduction by the real guy at the beginning. It really gives a narrative feeling to the episode and sets an underlying theme for you to make connections with as well.

I thought I was poor at interpreting and drawing connections between dialogue and scenes, but apparently not as bad as some people here lol. His sister, really? No, obviously he was abused by the maids in childhood. From my perspective though, he was comparing the woman's behavior and actions to them (something like that). Basically the guy had a traumatic childhood and has felt alienated ever since. He desires human connection, but is unable to obtain it.

The woman died while he lived. Unleash the despair!

Really good way to kick things off.
The art and animation was really good, but I'm not a big fan of the character design here. The characters all had that "almost-bishounen" look to them, much like Death Note or Gantz. That's fine for shows like that, but I think for these type of stories I would have preferred character designs that were a bit more realistic, like the ones in Satoshi Kon's or Katsuhiro Otomo's works... or at least something more defined and iconic like the ones in Maasaki Yuasa's work...

Anyway, I really liked the way the story was presented, and not being familiar with the original novel, I'm curious to see where it goes in the next episode.

Wow, for an "older" anime the animation is so awesome! Pretty intense first episode and I think I'm going to enjoy this show a lot. The mood they created felt so real! Plus I really liked the music too - ED was OK, I liked the chorus. Looking forward to the next chapter of this story :O

Now this was intense! Really loved the "mature" art style. Guy resembles Kira in the way he hides his true self, and his haircut too. I'm curious if next episode will be with another main character or if they will keep going with this story line.
You're gonna carry that weight.

An unexpected introduction, the 20th century setting of the first story, and a theme chock full of gloomy dreadfulness; these aspects definitely had my eyes glued onto the screen since I didn't want to miss a single thing because it piqued my interest that much~ It was still quite surreal for me to not say that I wasn't a bit confused but it'll most likely clear up later on.

Damn those maids for fiddling the kid's diddle when he had no idea what they were doing to him only to have the guy remember that memory as one of the most traumatic things ever once he understood what really went on. He has that really ominous serial killer vibe to him so I'm curious on what he'll do next now that he failed to kill himself with that lady. There's a feeling in the back of my mind that he's the type to do something as conniving as to go down to the shoreline without jumping after her and passing out because of the sleeping pills though.

I always enjoy mature dark stories, even if I don't understand them. Hoping the series will not be disappointing. Love the atmosphere

What's with the part where women are bent over the younger protagonist?

The last scene over the protagonist's face reminded me of Light Yagami

Gotta thank some random guy on MAL that i snatched this gem of a series from his favorites. Saw the first 4 episodes already, was a deep and thought provoking story, raw emotions, despair, usually not portrayed that well in anime, masterpiece so far in my eyes, the mood and art reminds me of the first ovas of Rurouni Kenshin. Definitely gonna pick up Osamu Dazai's novels after this.

Damn already down to a depressing start, failing in committing double suicide I wonder how the mc is going to live with the idea of murdering a married woman

Seeing the title of the anime I have the feeling it is going to consist out of multiple different stories
