Compared to me, who disliked the whole lot of them.

While the story and character drama were weak in terms of Mushishi standards the imagery in this episode was as up to standards.

This basically summarizes my thoughts on the episode. I definitely did love seeing Adashino again, his interactions with Ginko were amusing as perusal. & I also, really loved the OST, particularly during Ginko's speech to Ibuki.

As a whole though, what makes this episode stand out, at least for me, was the imagery. The episode was breathtaking at points, particularly the ending the sequence with the Torikaze eating the Yobiko while totally fucking shit up for the family.

Now please Mushishi, don't leave me again next week.

I'm actually the opposite. I found the character drama to be among the best so far this season (so many interesting themes running throughout: ignorance of the unknown, manipulation/control of others, the importance of family and gaining acceptance, as well as sacrificing for those you love), while the visuals were noticeably below standard (particularly in terms of colouring) - for the first half of the episode, anyway. They really picked up towards the end, and the last five minutes were phenomenal.

Glad to see you again, Adashino-sensei X)

As for the theme itself, this episode depict what Mushishi had usually done; some little thing that can bring some disastrous thing.
In this episode, that little thing is the souvenir Ibuki bought for his stepmother.

To think that such a small souvenir could almost kill someone....

Loved this episode.
That guy was messed up, probably as a result of faulty parenting, but still, talk about overreacting. He was gonna kill his mom because something quite petty.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Hmm, it was a pretty good episode I guess. Ibuki is a bit rebellious. He ignores Ginko not once but twice. That's some attitude ^^

I did feel bad for him when his step-mom told him to sell of the seashell. If only she knew how hard he worked to buy it for her. I hope Ibuki comes back one day and settles things peacefully with his family. I hate to imagine their state of affairs without a house.

I honestly don't know what's going to happen with Ibuki but let's hope he follows Ginko's advice and doesn't abuse his powers over the Torikaze.

Man, I just finished watching episode 8 of Mushishi and it was OUTSTANDING. My favorite overall for season 2.

The Torikaze were just beautiful! And those whistling done by the VAs part were skillful, props to them man, loved it.

Even Ibuki's strange power or I should say charm to attract those Torikaze were interesting. Handy for a sailor like himself.

While the Torikaze were just as beautiful Mushi, the Yobiko, on the other hand, were matched to parallel them. Damn Mushi-shi's lore is really something to appreciate. Great writing here.

Ginko luring out Yobiko like a boss saving the family terrified by Mushi's infestation on their hut.

I'm glad that Ibuki let go of his emotions and saved his stepmother from the peril. Way to go, he matured up. Really felt sad for him at the end scene when he was crying and whistling at the same time and left his family.

And that godly animation when the Yobiko were slaughtered by Torikaze was goosebumps generating! This is what I love about Mushishi.

This episode was pure gold, while not expanding much on Ibuki's familial relationship but it highlighted them a bit. In the end, he did cared about his mother when he bought that expensive gift for her and was going to happily announce his employment as a sailor but sadly this episode ended on a bittersweet note.

10/10 episode.

Stunning episode (although that's nothing new), I liked the extra dosage of humor this time around and the visuals were breathtaking as always.

This episode did a splendid job at showing the consequences that come with abusing the nature of the mushi. Not to say that it was a punishment either, since once again the main theme behind Mushishi is that neither the people nor the mushi are at fault. Both existences overlap and lead to these unpredictable conflicts.

Weren't those dolphins I have just heard? Meh, so those things were "wing birds" and not dolphins as I thought lol.

Of course, why would he heed the warning of someone who knows better than him and now the boat has sunk.

Lol, Ginko got covered up in snakes...

Damn, they're back in the house since it seems that dude keeps whistling even though he was warned once again, stupid fellow.

What a beautiful and cool eps. I glad to finally see Ginko again this week......I seriously hope they stop w/ this every-other-week shit, though (or if nothing else at least freakin' tell us it's not gonna be on next week).

I have to be blunt when I say, I don't feel sorry one damn bit for what happen to their home! I think it was utterly deplorable as to how his parents--especially his step-mother--treated him. And I was down-right PISSED at what the hell came out her mouth after he worked so hard to buy her that beautiful gift! I don't care if money was tight and that she felt he could of just bought home the money instead....like my mama used to say (rest her soul) 'there's a way you go about saying things to people'. She DID NOT have to come out of her mouth in such a callous way that she did! My heart absolutely BROKE when I saw that look on his face. And his father has the nerve to call him the 'ingrate'......pfft, sounds more like the pot (or pots if you include the step-mom) calling the kettle black, there ever was one. <_<

However, I got to give Ginko kudos to how he handled it, too. Not only w/ getting rid of the Yoriba but also realizing Ibuki's hurt and demoralization of being rejected and yet still explain to him (w/o chastizing him) while he may be upset and want to think of using the mushi to get even there's also a price to pay bending the rules of those kinds of things of nature, blindly. I think it was beautifully poetic way of Ginko to help remind him not to abuse such a beautiful ability he was for the wrong reason--yet he left it his hands to decide the best path to continue his life.

Very poigant to see Ibuki shed those tears, and basically saying 'fuck it, I'll let it ago....and you all, too. I'm not going to try to please you all anymore, but live my life w/ people who will appreciate me.'. Let his 'parents' see how far they get, w/o Ibuki going and trying to make money to bring home to them.

This indeed. All people saying he's a spoiled brat don't take into consideration he's probably been treated like this his whole life. The latest act of whistling them back to the house was a grave mistake, but it was on an impulse of desperate anger and frustration. He saw that in the end and fixed it, though his decision to leave the house was probably for the best as well. Absolutely adored this episode

This episode is absolutely beautiful, one of my favorites in Mushishi.
I loved what Ginko said to the kid- the part about it being up to him who he will be. His parents' behavior shouldn't dictate the kind of person he is,that's not an excuse; it's completely up to him.
Obviously, I don't think the kid is a brat, spoiled or horrible. He has to work hard to provide for his family but he's probably never been treated with love or appreciation, only looked at as a provider for the family (the first thing the mother had to say after he returned); let's remember that he's just a kid.

Honestly, Mushishi episodes never disappoint. Another moving episode. It was so sad seeing that boy actually thinking about his mom and buying her that expensive gift, but then actually coming home & her not caring about it at all. I understand they have to worry about the well-being of the family but geez it meant alot to him.

& then when the father yelled at him for whistling, not knowing that he was doing it to actually help the mother. geez louise.

Him leaving the village was so sad.

But on another note, I love how this season is showing at least a greater nuance in character designs. & also, OMG Ginko and the doctor's relationship is too hilarious!!

More valuable life lessons from Ginko this episode; I really loved the way Ginko handled the situation.

The scene with the Torikaze eating the Yobiko was SPECTACULAR. That was some mix of awe-inducing and hilarious.

Wow i see ibuki's mother really care for him.....

seriously you call that a "mother"??? his ship get sunk he barely managed to survive and the respond he get to his mother when he came back "oh ibuki you made it back alive" its like.... its ok even if ibuki didn't come back, he's so excited to go home because he want to give that beautiful gift to his mother along with a good news that he will become a full-time sailor to impress her.but seriously.....what's wrong with that mother?

But,

both is at fault here....wanting his mother to die is too much
but i laugh so hard when the torikaze destroy the house serve them right!!!

anyway good episode as always what can you expect its mushishi!!!

Fortunately in the end he did what was right. I think is totally comprehensible why he left his family so it's alright. And nice to see Ginko showing him that killing his step-mother (or the woman that adopted him, I don't know) would be wrong. Great decision by the kid haha.

And like someone said, the way he was treated was terrible. She didn't care for him... the way she talked to him when he came home showed that (like the guy above said). He was like just a moneymaker to his mother. So yeah, wise decision, kid!

BTW, Ginko is so badass <3 <3 <3

I wouldn't be able to say it better. He was a kid. His actions towards the end were more mature for his age.

Also, it shows how kids are immature and being immature are very easily corrupted. In this case the corruption wasn't caused by bad company but by power.

I find the Ibuki's actions understandable.

The kid was a brat. He screwed over his boat by ignoring Ginko's advice (luckily the whole crew survived), screwed over his family by bringing those Mushi to his home plus getting the mother sick, almost killed the mother by whistling at night on purpose after Ginko got rid of the Mushi, wrecked their house with the wind mushi and then left them right after.

You can say all you want about the parents being mean and what not but from what I saw in this episode they were perfectly reasonable. His mother telling him to sell the gift back to a pawn shop was a logical thing to do since the guy lost his job so they would be in need of money for food and his father scolding him while he was whistling was also a reasonable reaction since they couldn't see mushi and had no idea of their son's ability. If you saw your son whistling and chilling on a tree while your wife was bedridden I'm pretty sure you'd get pissed off as well.

Even if they were actually the biggest pos off-screen, what the kid did was still terrible since he didn't seem to give a dam about his 3 young siblings. The snake mushi could have made them sick as well eventually and now their home is wrecked.

This idiot. He got told to not whistle and he whistled anyway.

Adashino tho lmao. He was trying to be so careful yet Ginko was watching it all, and then he flinches and goes "yo!" I love their relationship.

This guy was the most annoying in the whole series. If you care that much about the gift then why not tell her that he bought for her. But nah he was just "I have only this" He never said it's for you or anything. When told to sell it, he just sulked more and more. How much of a kid you are? People who are trying to justify his 'maturity' are being too soft. Just because he 'spared' her life at the end doesn't mean he's suddenly very gentle or caring. There was lack of communication, things could be better if he tried. One of my least favorite episode even tho it still had some enticing mushi.

About this family problem.. Both parties are wrong.. But the major difference is Ibuki is still an adolescent boy, where his step mother is a grown woman.. I am not saying it's okay for a young man to do a bad thing, but it is understandable remember how unstable people in that age is..
In conclusion, that mother is not a good mother ... In my opinion, when there is a bad communication about parents and kid, major responsibility to fix things is in parents, if you don't do that, I will say you are not a good parent..

But this episode again show us how well crafted dramas in Mushishi is.. And Ginko is always a great man ...

I felt bad for the son because when he came home his step mother didn't seem rejoiced that he was alive and all she seemed to care about was that since his ship sank he wont be getting paid. I don't think he should have done that to his family but that's probably what happens when a person is hurting sometimes they just want to see other hurts.
Let’s say I posed this question to you: “Can all human souls be bought with money or not?” Now remember, the keyword here is “all”. The answer is “There are times when you can buy them, and other times, not,” right? The human being… sometimes he’ll uphold his pride and conscience even if he’s offered ten billion yen, and other times he’ll murder someone over one yen. ~Izaya Ohira (Durarara)
