Cute start I guess.

I mean, this show is the classic fun slice of life stuff but it's only 3 minutes long. ED song seems kinda catchy but I'm not a fan of the visuals so far.

Passable as a set of promo shorts, I guess. I'm not really going to keep watching it, but the idea to use animation as a means of city promotion is commendable. A fresh and novel solution that just might strike a chord with a narrow selection of people who consider visiting the Kanto region.

I guess you have to understand a lot more Japanese than I do to get what's supposed to be 'funny' with this; the dialect quirks. Though, I can tell that the quirks are there, so it's something. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Though I didn't expect much from a commercial.

Also, I went to Google maps to see what amazingly exotic part of Japan they're trying to sell.

Urawa is literally a spitball away from Tokyo -.-

This series looks like it will be a good example of the "Cute Girls Doing Cute
Things" (CGDCT) genre. So possibly it won't have much comedy. CGDCT fans
can sit back and enjoy the cuteness of the eight main characters. In addition to
CGDCT, certainly a major component is the promotion of tourism to this region.
However, it is a common thing that anime series are set in specific real-life
places. Background scenes may be nearly photographic reproductions of actual
street scenes, with only slight modifications for artistic reasons.

That rabbit-themed shrine that Usagi went to visit appears to be an exact copy
of the real one. It is a lovely place. You can see it if you do a YouTube search
for the following phrase (including the space):
浦和 調神社
Many tourists have posted their videos on YouTube. There are so many of them,
and it is a matter of taste which one you will like the most.

Associated with that shrine, there is an annual festival which apparently takes
place on December 12th. You can see it by doing a YouTube search for either
浦和 調神社 十二日まち
or
浦和 調神社 十二日市

In July, the district of Urawa has an impressive parade in which different groups
of people carry portable shrines. Search on YouTube for:
浦和まつり 神輿パレード

Sadly, none of the YouTube videos which I found showed cute high school girls
with pastel-colored hair wearing sailor uniforms with short blue skirts.

Fans of the classic CGDCT series "Lucky Star" (2007, らき☆すた) often travel to
Saitama Prefecture (埼玉県) on "pilgrimages" to visit the locations in the series.
Their school is in Kasukabe (春日部市) in Saitama Prefecture. The otaku gamer
girl Konata Izumi lives in Satte (幸手市) in Saitama Prefecture, which she once
described as "shanty town". The fraternal twins Kagami and Tsukasa live in Kuki
(久喜市) which was formerly known as Washimiya (鷲宮町). Their family runs a
Shinto Shrine, which is closely modeled on the Washinomiya Shrine (鷲宮神社).
It is also located in Kuki (久喜市). On these webpages...

...some fans of Lucky Star went on pilgrimages (巡礼聖地) and photographed
many locations which correspond closely to backgrounds in the series.

Right now, the official Twitter account and the official website for "Urawa no
Usagi-chan" are challenging fans to go out and locate the actual places for the
various scenes in the show. Then they are to send them in for some kind of
contest.

For what it is, which is a 3 minutes short anime that's obviously not as well funded as other projects, it is okay. The character motions aren't that good and have noticable-enough delays, but it is not the worst I've seen. In fact, I applaud them for using 2D animations rather than 3D. This city advertising anime might actually turn out pleasant.

Her parents named her after the shrine nearby...? Usagi's parents confirmed for no damn creativity. That's like naming your kids Post Office, Village Church, Railroad or Town Hall. Yes, a lot like that!

A detailed explanation of the reasons for the first and last names of each of
the characters is provided in this Japanese-language Wikipedia article about
the series. There is a lot of logic to it.

Personally, I call this series "Cute Girls Doing Cute Things" (CGDCT) since I am
a huge fan of the CGDCT genre.

A lot of you are fans of the "Slice of Life" (SoL) genre.

People who follow Moe anime will certainly call it "Moe", with good justification.

Another description of a series such as this is "Iyashikei" (癒し系) or "healing anime".
See these links for some information:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Iyashikei
http://www.animenation.net/blog/2007/11/08/ask-john-what-are-iyashikei-anime/
http://nakama-britannica.animeuknews.net/2008/05/14/a-moment-of-stillness-the-appeal-of-iyashikei/

People will often complain that "Iyashikei" anime series are boring since nothing
really exciting happens and there are no monster battles. Also, they typically
don't have rolling-on-the-floor-laughing comedy. I am rarely in the mood to
watch a long Iyashikei. However, the episodes in this series are very short, which
works out about right.

But I don't want to jump to the conclusion that this series actually will end up
being Iyashikei. Perhaps some kind of fight will break out in Episode 2. Also,
Usagi's two friends seemed to be hassling her quite a lot.

The kanji for her name does not match the reading...

True.

They give a long explanation for the unusual name of the shrine and the non-
standard way in which that kanji 調 is pronounced in this Japanese-language
Wikipedia article about the shrine:

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%AA%BF%E7%A5%9E%E7%A4%BE

It is in the section titled 概要.

Long story short, they just do it that way, and nobody is totally certain why.

"Death Note" fans might recall the main character "Light Yagami". His given
name "Light" was written using a kanji that meant "light". But the normal
reading of that kanji was totally different. The model Misa Misa thought it
was so cool that Light's given name was pronounced just like the English
word "Light", apparently.

naki12 also said:
No, I don't think there were any dialect quirks. They were all talking
pretty standard Japanese.

Thanks for pointing this out!

As a side note, all of the voice actresses (including the ones we haven't met
yet) are from Saitama Prefecture. This is specifically stated in the individual
Wikipedia articles about the eight main character voice actresses. The specific
location of their birthplace within Saitama Prefecture is not stated. So let's
listen carefully in case they use some special expressions that only Saitama
people use.

naki12 said:
I think she meant the parents went to the shrine, saw the rabbit statue
and decided to name her "Usagi".

That may well be.

However, the full story is much weirder than that since . . .

You gotta understand, this is basically a commercial that gets aired on TV in between shows. It's only purpose is to familiarize the name with people viewing the channel. It's better than watching the same commercial over and over. I happen to think this is a good style of advertisement, especially if it can get a good slot between two popular shows. This was an introduction, and it did just that, next episode will probably have a cute little gag and a new location of the town highlighted.

All of the eight main voice actresses were born in Saitama Prefecture. So I guess
the first thing to be suspicious about is whether they tried to save money by
only hiring inexperienced newbie voice actresses. As it turns out, they didn't.
Half of the cast are highly-experienced veterans.

Can anybody point to a specific girl whose voice acting sounds wrong?

- - - - - - - - - -

In my experience, it is common that there are severe complaints by Western
fans about the voice acting performances in Cute Girls Doing Cute Things
anime series. However, after inviting a lot more discussion, it often turns out
to be the case that the voice performances actually match the roles really
well. So it was an artistic decision by the director to have the voices sound
that way. It was not poor work by the voice actress.

In particular, this was a major discussion topic for the iconic CGDCT series
"Kitakubu" (2013) where there were numerous complaints about the voice
acting. In the end, there seemed to be a consensus that the voice acting
was basically fine. Some of the characters spoke with weird voices because
it matched their characters. However, there was one of the five main girls
who yelled much too loudly in the early episodes and she quietened down
by Episode 3. I am fairly certain that was an artistic decision by the director
who was directing his very first series and struggled in the early episodes.

The only one that sounded to me... not so much wrong as completely fake, was the random old lady - probably as much because of her lines as the voice acting.

Not particularly fond of any of the characters so far, but we're only just getting started, there's plenty yet to meet, and thus plenty of hope still.

A handful of barely animated moeblobs superimposed over pictures of a city with an ugly filter, telling you how great their city is, how much the love it and how much fun their daily lives are living in it, 3 minutes at a time. Or so you would think, because the later episodes don't even have that and become even more generic.

Already the fact of creating an anime on the stations is something really strange, then making them become girls, does a little smile, but with the Japanese, by now I am not surprised any more than anything. The narration shows nothing exceptional, I expected something different, the episode shows the simple life of a high school girl, at least at first sight. What is interesting is that it shows the places of Saitama and the quality of the drawings is good despite the existence of the CG.

I want to continue it, I don't know why.
