I really liked the insight on the internal struggles of a family and their boy this episode. Once again, the show builds up tension with feelings.

Despair plays a role in human nature and I like how it connected with this episode's story. The mushi was interesting as well. There he goes under the waters ;_;

...

The mukurosou acting as a decomposer that brings things back to the mountain. It was something seeing all these mushi growing on a dead body.

The younger brother having killed his older brother's daughter by accident. Knowing the outcome of his eventual death, he went and the old brother killed him.

That atmosphere change when Ginko mentioned that the older brother is being followed by the smell of death. Felt some danger at that moment!

Really felt the danger for the child with the uncle wanting to stop the "thing" that will kill him back. Slipping and drowning, it was a pretty nice scene when even the mountain isn't allowing his return. That was pretty dark...

Wow, that episode was really depressing. I thought he boy would help his uncle, but he didn't. I kinda understand why he didn't rescue him, but he should've helped him anyway.

Poor Sousuke. He really didn't mean to kill him. And now he's gonna be haunted by it for life D:

What a dark ep that was. Not only did the brother kill his otouto...he was also gonna kill the son too T^T

And Ginko was just so chill at the end seeing him dead away from the mountains.

It's amazing how Mushishi can make u relate and connected to characters this much in just a few minutes :O

The Mud Weeds is among the most distressing/dark chapters of Mushishi, concentrating on the human nature of rage and revenge.

Mushi Trivia

-- This is one mushi that genuinely gave me the shivers due to how creepy it looked in full grass form on a person's legs. >.<

In the beginning, anyone would think the uncle is a kind-hearted person for adopting his nephew after his younger brother's death and even accompanying him to say goodbye to one last time.
Little did Ginko know at that time, he was talking to a murderer... :O

Really, that scene where Shinobu (younger brother) confessed about what exactly happened to Yuri was pretty upsetting indeed. But I'm not so sure if the elder brother should've bashed his head with a rock and then throw him down a cliff.

That nightmare was pretty creepy though.. A walking corpse with blood dripping from his hand saying "Nii-san... Sumanai." >~<

Felt bad for Sousuke after he found out that his uncle killed his dad. Still, he was going to keep quiet because of what his dad taught him.
That moment when the uncle was going to kill Sousuke too, but fell on the river accidentally instead. Poor guy will be haunted all his life now..

Love how Ginko found the mudded form of his corpse by the river and said "So you couldn't even return to the mountains." So chill!

Great episode! In my viewpoint, the mountains are for deceased people who are fairly innocent. What happened to Yuri was a truly unfortunate but Shinobu didn't do it intentionally, thus he was able to return to the mountains.

Mushishi has really been depressing as of late and the imagery of fungi growing on people's bodies didn't exactly make this a pleasurable viewing experience. First time I felt so uncomfortable watching a Mushishi episode and I'm really wondering why they've been so dark lately. I know the next episode will be similar to this one so I'm really wondering if they're going to end on a depressing note.

Just one more episode and then a special, most likely!

This cour has been killing it, literally. Again, we are greeted, and parted as matter of fact, with another great episode. The OST had an unusually strong presence, which definitely helped to empower some of the scenes.

I enjoyed the concept of this dreadful encounter. Didn't expect it to turn out this way though. I guess the only way the uncle could have cleansed his tainted hands was death itself. Sousuke won't escape the cruel fate of suffering from the aftermath. I hope he can find someone to stay with, until the mountains eventually claim him as well, if not already.

Definitely one of my new favorite episodes.
I'm a sucker for stories that have to do with murder and intense feelings of despair.
This episode had a story with themes like that not to mention the atmosphere, created by the music and setting, felt ominous. Especially with that Mushi, which actually kind of creeped me out.
Mushi-shi has been really depressing lately, in a good way. A lot of "bad" endings these past few episodes, which I actually love. Keep 'em coming!

Great episode, as always.
The uncle was really disgusting, he killed his own brother and tried to do the same with the son. He got what he deserved. Really dark.
That mushi creeped me out every time I watched it, it grows using it's host energy, like a plant, so disgusting...

wow, pretty dark episode this time... but I like that about this show, it feels more realistic this way when there isn't always an happy ending. Like last episode, where the problem was solved eventually but it still was pretty sad at the end!

Yeah, pretty much sums it up.

Wasn't that thrilled by the actual episode (beyond the digusting element) either. Most episodes, happy or sad, either provide some kind of closure, or go full circle. I felt this one pretty much left it out there. Also, it seems somewhat unlike Ginko to turn his back on events (and the kid), knowing that the uncle killed the guy.

AMAZING EPISODE! At this point I expect nothing less from Mushishi

Easily one of the best in the entire series. It's a shame so few are left. And like someone posted above I think they did a fantastic job with the OST this episode; something (IMO) that they have failed to do recently.

Same here x_x I kept getting goosebumps and I tried to look at parts of the screen where the mushi wasn't growing but even that was difficult. Still getting goosebumps omg.

I said that last episode was the darkest yet this season, but wow, Mushishi just likes to keep making me wrong. Last week was dark but emotional. This week's just...dark. Sousuke's a really good child. He confronted his uncle, yet he said he would not tell anyone and mentioned that his uncle has been good to him. He would not hate him because his father told him not to hate anyone. Even then, the uncle was too afraid of death. I liked Ginko in the end. He passed by and then said that the guy didn't even make it back to the mountain, almost saying that he didn't deserve to go back to the mountain where everyone else who was loved by their family were left at.

Ugh, things growing out of people... it wasn't so bad for me because the animation for it doesn't look realistic, but still. An unpleasant thought.
I was surprised to find out that he killed his own brother, but I think the poetic justice at the end was fitting. Though I hope Sousuke doesn't grow to hate his uncle... I wish he atleast learned of the reason why his uncle killed his father. :/

Saying that, I've really been liking this season of Mushishi. I enjoy the stories much more, they're darker, and there was even an episode or two of Ginko's past which was really nice.

Me after watching this episode

That... is... very... f!cking... scary.

The overall theme of grudge and revenge (and fear) is really thick, too thick. It's so thick I can smell the nauseating stink from the uncle's action and mind.

It is so... fitting how the episode used the mud grass that acted as a "parasitic" object that lingers to one's body. I think, the mud grass is some kind of a "symbolism" of "grudge" that keeps on living. How those mud grass spread as well to the villagers probably means that "grudge" can affect those who around that grudged people.

5/5, like usual.

HOW TO SAVE ANIME IN THREE SIMPLE STEPS

  1. To have Mars of Destruction, Skelter Heaven, and Pupa properly adapted in TV series form by Madhouse
  2. To have Inferno Cop properly adapted in TV series form by Bones, director: Urobuchi Gen
  3. An anime crossover of Mushishi x ARIA x Haibane Renmei.

Should even one of the above conditions cannot be done, anime is still at risk.

I LIKE that Mushishi has these "gross" mushi too. I hate when things are all prettied up just for the sake of aesthetics, when the story portrays them as completely natural. Nature can be gross sometimes. Also, I don't think this was too bad compared to say episode 2 of first season with eyeball juice gushing from her eye sockets and a little snake like mushi comes squirming out. That....was unsettling. BUT I LIKED THAT TOO.

Such an odd ritual to offer the dead to the mountain even Sousuke agreed to it I guess living around hills would create this culture
With the truth about the death of Yuri things got really dark

I don't quite get how Sousuke would figure out the cause of his father demise after hearing Ginko's theory of his uncle's mushi
The translation must have missed something

"So you couldn't even return to the mountains."

Bravo. Ginko walking away from the uncle's mud-corpse as the screen fades out - that has to be one of my favorite scenes from the entire Mushishi series. I replayed that half a dozen times.

It was a very dark episode, but those are always the best episodes. I don't feel like the uncle deserved such an end, so I can't help but feel pity for him, but I feel truly sorrowful about Sousuke, as he's appeared to have lost his entire family. I want to say I wish the episode showed what happened to Sousuke after the tragic turn of events, but it would've ruined such a spectacular ending.

The OST was brilliant as always, especially the outro.

This season has been amazing. One episode left... at least I'm caught up now.

I don't think any words of praise will describe my appreciation for Mushishi anymore. I want to say that this is one of the most well executed episodes, yet I can't even remember how many times I've said that.

Aside from Mushishi's artistically masterful atmosphere, it also has a way to send subtle hints of foreshadowing that tap into instinct without giving away what's about to unfold. When the uncle said that his brother fell off the cliff and died, that's when I noticed a transition towards something else. It didn't arouse any suspicion towards the uncle nor did I feel as though something was particularly off, but something about it kept me pondering.

The manner in which they built up to the revelation of the murder was absolutely chilling. The imagery of the uncle lifting a rock above his head, carrying his brother's corpse, and tossing it off the cliff painted out the fury, anguish, and malice that accompanied it all flawlessly. But even above that, it also spoke volumes about how much the uncle (damn I always forget their names) loved Yuri.

Ginko demonstrated his wisdom and good judgment yet again, indirectly hinting that he knew what the uncle had done without prying or pushing himself onto the hit list. Ever since it showed the murder, however, the uncle's reactions to what he did were met with glares of contempt and desperate wrath. The unraveling of the mystery of the mukurusou was brilliant, connecting the lingering scent of death to the blood stained hands of the uncle.

I think what got me the most, however, was the very end when Ginko finds his corpse and says "You will not be returned to the mountains" while simultaneously tilting the screen up to a mountain and fading into black.

I look forward to the wonders that the next episode will bring later today, although it pains me that this is the final one.
