Dr. Stone

After five years of harboring unspoken feelings, high-schooler Taiju Ooki is finally ready to confess his love to Yuzuriha Ogawa. Just when Taiju begins his confession however, a blinding green light strikes the Earth and petrifies mankind around the world—turning every single human into stone.

Several millennia later, Taiju awakens to find the modern world completely nonexistent, as nature has flourished in the years humanity stood still. Among a stone world of statues, Taiju encounters one other living human: his science-loving friend Senkuu, who has been active for a few months. Taiju learns that Senkuu has developed a grand scheme—to launch the complete revival of civilization with science. Taiju's brawn and Senkuu's brains combine to forge a formidable partnership, and they soon uncover a method to revive those petrified.

However, Senkuu's master plan is threatened when his ideologies are challenged by those who awaken. All the while, the reason for mankind's petrification remains unknown.

This came up in a conversation at work. I was told I carry myself similar to one of the cast and there was a high chance I would enjoy the show. I have to say they were right about me enjoying the show.

Although it's just the first season I enjoy the cast of characters as a whole. Each one has their place and the piece they fill in the entire puzzle of pushing civilization along. Even if not everyone wants to walk the same path to get there. I mainly like the cast initially because while there are quite a few of them by then ... end of season 1, they also have unique enough personality starters to stand out just enough. It doesn't feel like there are any "clone" characters. Senkuu and Chrome are a good example of this. They are both intelligent but it's obvious to the watcher that they have enough uniqueness to not be 80% recycled in effort to fill another body in the story. I appreciate that aspect a lot.

I also enjoy learning in general and as one might assume, I don't typically come to anime to "learn", its more of a relaxation thing but when I find one like Dr. Stone I often find myself fact checking a little bit to see how grounded the knowledge is. If the show takes a lot of liberties because it is make believe I would be okay with it because that is the point of most anime, to let loose and not care so much. Dr Stone seems to have based a lot of the science in real world truth which I really appreciate about the show. Sure it might be simplified or sped up a bit for the sake of the pacing or whatnot but the science is certainly grounded in reality.

I also really enjoyed the comedy inserts in the show a lot. They found a lot of good ways to enhance the show with it in my opinion, especially after the village is established. I am looking forward to continuing the series and I recommend it to anyone who wants a different style slice of life or likes situational comedy and a touch of banter

Mixed Feelings

It's good but not that compelling. If you've ever played any civilization games where you use resources to build a city, you might sorta like this anime? Dr. Stone sets up a very interesting premise in the first few episodes. Essentially, Senku is a high school student with the mind of a genius. One moment he's doing experiments in science class; the next, the earth gets subjected to this mysterious power that turns everyone into stone. Two million years later, Senku breaks free from his cryogenic stasis. Now, it's up to him to rebuild civilization using his extensive knowledge of science. That hook was definitely ... a clincher. And don't get me wrong, the first few episodes with Taiju and Yuzuhira were very engaging. I liked the comical dynamic between him and Senku. As the episodes go on, Taiju and Yuzuhira become sidelined, and you won't see them until the end of the season. Eventually, Senku gets introduced to new characters and continues to build new inventions. At that point, I realized that the "high" I got from seeing Senku make new things were starting to wane a bit. The show does really well at explaining the actual "science" behind Senku's inventions, but it just becomes too... scientific to the point where it becomes kinda redundant. Even though the show is backed up by factual scientific info, some of the inventions Senku pulls off are so ridiculous my suspension of disbelief started to, well, unsuspend. The new characters, however, are interesting in their own way. And the episodes where Senku retrieves materials were fun to watch. Overall, I think the first half of the season started off strong, then it just becomes this mishmash of new characters, fan-service, and information overload. It was a fun watch, but it's not enough for me to check out the second season.

Dr Stone is a "comedy" that starts with a highschool boy getting ready to confess his love to a girl.
But then the end of the world happens and every human in the world is turned to stone. Cars crash. Planes fall from the sky. One can only imagine the amount of deaths.

Turns out people are still conscious in their stone body, and our MCs keep themselves occupied one by thinking of the girl he loves. The other by simply counting.
They break free after 3000 years and somehow still kept their sanity despite being stone and conscious for 3 millennia.

First of all this is a ... terrible way to start a comedy. Im not sure at which point i was supposed to be laughing.

None of the characters are interesting. One of the MCs is always yelling.
The animation looks like flash animation.

Five minutes into this anime i already hated it but decided to give it a fair shot so i suffered through 5 episodes at least.
Its so slow. I kept waiting for something fun and worth watching to happen but it doesn't. I kept waiting for it to make me care but it doesn't.

The action is not fun to watch. The constant yapping is not fun to listen to.

You'd think the entire world being turned to stone would be an interesting hook but its just not interesting.

This is a boring drama about boring ideologies.
