Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari

The Four Cardinal Heroes are a group of ordinary men from modern-day Japan summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc to become its saviors. Melromarc is a country plagued by the Waves of Catastrophe that have repeatedly ravaged the land and brought disaster to its citizens for centuries. The four heroes are respectively bestowed a sword, spear, bow, and shield to vanquish these Waves. Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku, becomes cursed with the fate of being the "Shield Hero." Armed with only a measly shield, Naofumi is belittled and ridiculed by his fellow heroes and the kingdom's people due to his weak offensive capabilities and lackluster personality.

When the heroes are provided with resources and comrades to train with, Naofumi sets out with the only person willing to train alongside him, Malty Melromarc. He is soon betrayed by her, however, and becomes falsely accused of taking advantage of her. Naofumi then becomes heavily discriminated against and hated by the people of Melromarc for something he didn't do. With a raging storm of hurt and mistrust in his heart, Naofumi begins his journey of strengthening himself and his reputation. Further along however, the difficulty of being on his own sets in, so Naofumi buys a demi-human slave on the verge of death named Raphtalia to accompany him on his travels.

As the Waves approach the kingdom, Naofumi and Raphtalia must fight for the survival of the kingdom and protect the people of Melromarc from their ill-fated future.

I give this show only one point less because of the lolicon trope for obvious reasons, but the show actually handled the concept really well with making the protagonist not a pervert at all, and actually regard Filo as his daughter. His cool vibes really reminds me of Ichigo from Bleach, and I admire his business savvy mind, and how he's kind but at no fault of his own.

I also really like the subtle(?) romance between him and Raphtalia, and how they handled him adapting to seeing her as a woman over the series. I don't get any ick with how they met in the ... beginning since Raphtalia isn't human and she's actually a young adult, but due to the abuse she suffered, her appearance kept her as a child, but once she got the basic needs met, she aged properly. I also love how she handles her jealousy cutely but also maturely, and remains having a good relationship with the other girls in a motherly way. A lot of other anime has the girls go through a 'woe is me' phase, but Raphtalia actually takes more active approaches instead.

Filo kinda annoyed me though with her childishness in the beginning, so I got scared for a moment, but once Melty came into the picture, she really mellowed out. I guess she just needed more kid interactions which made me like her.

I also like Melty as well because she's not as strong, but she's brave and uses her royal status properly and her flaws is just a part of growing up.

And liking this many female characters is surprising me because I usually don't care for this many female characters that aren't in a female driven show. Usually girls would be either boring or annoying, but I actually like a lot of them, besides Bitch/Whore. I guess I like them because they're not overexaggerted or overbearing. Their personalities and their growth is instead properly shown and when they're happy, I can't help being happy, too.

And they got a new member who looks like the hopeless dumb kind, but with how this show handles female characters, I'm actually looking forward to see how she grows.

Althoooooouuuuuuugh, I've seen the reviews for the next 2 seasons, and I don't think I want to ruin my experience with this show, so I may not watch the next season and just believe that Raphtalia and Naofumi got married, settled at the fishing port town and had kids, Filo and Melty become queen besties and green haired girl married bow guy after clearing her name.

Mixed Feelings

The shield hero is a postirony. You can't call it bad, because in fact it is supposed to be bad, and it does its job, therefore, because of its purpose, it is good.
The fact is that the main character ends up in a very bad fanfiction book created to pump money. The hero himself says about this that this book is a passerby. You have no right to call this anime bad, because the anime itself says so.
Naofumi is a simple anime guy, he's not smart, he's not stupid. However, in the anime, he seems to be the smartest person in the world, as the ... antagonists here are the dumbest people in the universe, with teenager-level thinking.
For some reason, in the world in which the hero fell, there are RPG mechanics, as in an MMORPG. This is strange, because the hero ended up in a book, and not in a game, but it's better not to look for logic in this anime. What is the value of Raphtalia's breasts changing their size, for no apparent reason.

I'm sorry. It's a pity.
I love the literary device where a character with a normal reputation accidentally loses it and has to restore it. However, the implementation of this in the anime is very poor.
It would have been much better if there had been an emphasis on Naofumi and Raphtalia's local adventures while revealing the world. Instead, the anime has a lot of bloody pathos for the sake of pathos, stupid antagonists who rule the world, and in general it's some kind of circus. Isekai stories have potential, but they do not use it, as it is not profitable.
This anime is very overrated, but on the other hand, it can entertain for 1 time. I don't know what happens in the continuation of the story, but there are rumors that everything is still 10 times worse.
However, thanks for your attention! I wish you enjoy anime.

The Rising of the Shield Hero presents a very common trope: We follow Naofumi, who is unfairly and unreasonably hated by absolutely everyone, so he has to grow as an underdog filled with disadvantages in an environment where villains antagonize and try to weaken/demoralize him, including people who should be his comrades (in fighting videogame-like waves of enemies that appear every few weeks).

The story starts with a cliche and is incredibly predictable all the way through but seems to be fine in the first few episodes, and it continues to have strong points such as the weapon skill system, the hero's character development and travels, ... decent and frequent fight animations, etc... However there were many negative points as well, a big one being the need to have the protagonist surrounded by little girls who fall in love with him, one who grows into the body of an adult in weeks, and another one who can shapeshift (but chooses to look like a kid), this pedo-bait element really ruins it for me, not only this anime falls into the crappy harem formula that most shonen follow, but they try to maximize revenue by making them enamored children who can magically not look like children. Well, there are also straight up children who accompany and love the hero too.

Trying to avoid spoilers, the anime follows our hero being well, a hero, emphasizing how despite his shortcomings he can be more heroic than his counterparts, there isn't much depth to it but the story is constantly moving to the next objective while a bigger threat is looming over everyone so it is engaging enough.

The most complexity you'll see is maybe the turmoil in Naofumi's head due to the way he's treated by most who meet him, there's also the way he perseveres in growing as a fighter and makes a living even when always being against comically cartoonish one-dimensional villains. Don't expect much really, despite being the supposed weakling, Naofumi has OP abilities that make every difficult and potentially interesting encounter trivial, and is lucky finding incredibly powerful companions, all of which takes away from the plot, most growth Naofumi experiences comes by chance instead of through merit.

I just know I would've loved this story when I was 15, but now that I've seen plenty of good stories this anime feels shallow, generic and focused on fanservice, watch it if you want a long fantasy story where the story is action-focused, fast-paced and easy to follow, and you don't mind the slightly sexualized lolis. The end of the season sets up some promising developments but I have low expectations, seeing how they introduced them while adding a new girl to the ever growing harem of the shield hero...
