Amaama to Inazuma

Since the death of his wife, Kouhei Inuzuka has been caring for his young daughter Tsumugi to the best of his abilities. However, with his lack of culinary knowledge and his busy job as a teacher, he is left relying on ready-made meals from convenience stores to feed the little girl. Frustrated at his own incapability to provide a fresh, nutritious meal for his daughter, Kouhei takes up an offer from his student, Kotori Iida, to come have dinner at her family's restaurant. But on their very first visit, the father and daughter discover that the restaurant is often closed due to Kotori's mother being away for work and that Kotori often eats alone. After much pleading from his pupil, Kouhei decides to continue to go to the restaurant with Tsumugi to cook and share delicious homemade food with Kotori.

Amaama to Inazuma follows the heartwarming story of a caring father trying his hardest to make his adorable little daughter happy, while exploring the meanings and values behind cooking, family, and the warm meals at home that are often taken for granted.

I went to watch this anime thinking I was going to fall in love with it, and that's what happened. What I didn't plan on was that I lost my father while I was watching it. It's really painful to remember even now as I'm writing this review, even though it's been a month since he passed away, but the story reminds me of when my father used to cook for me, his delicious lasagnas, stroganoff, and the creamed corn that I asked him to give me the recipe for, but he couldn't remember what it was anymore. I wish all the children in the ... world could have a wonderful father like Tsumugi-chan had, because unfortunately there are many out there who abandon their children, or if they don't abandon them, they mistreat them.
Watch it, you won't regret it!

Mixed Feelings

There is a reason I rated this anime low, and it has nothing to do with the characters. They were sweet, and the little girl was particularly cute, and had some believable character growth. It had nothing to to with the art, which was pretty good, or the sound, or anything like that. There was nothing wrong with this anime. Nothing at all.

Except...

It is a food anime.

That's all it is. Every episode involves a single father and his daughter making food with one of his students who is a kinda-sorta-maybe love interest.

And that's all you'll ever get out of it.

Any ... given episode is:

"Let's make some food"
"We're making some food!"
"It's delicious food!" (with faces and over the top descriptions of how good the food is)
*student makes slightly hidden googy eyes at the father*
*little girl is cute*

And that's it.

That's not even a spoiler. There's no effort to hide it, and I can only think of one or two things that are even *possible* to be a spoiler (which I haven't said). What you get in the first episode is pretty much exactly the same as what you get in the last, except there's a little bit of character growth and some different food.

If you like food anime and cute little girls and a few minor tearjerker moments... you'll love this anime.

If you're looking for anything... and I mean *anything*... else... move on. Nothing for you.

This show can't decide if it's about lonely individuals finding each other and becoming family, or if it's just a cooking appreciation show.

Based on the premise, you'd expect that this show would focus on interpersonal relationships and the difficulty of single parenting. But, the show ends up spending a lot of time on particular dishes and making them.

This would be perfectly fine if it really focused all of its energy on the food aspect, like "Restaurant from Another World" or "Campfire Cooking in Another World" (huh a lot of food isekai...)

But even when the characters are cooking, many shots are devoted to the characters' ... boring faces rather than the food. This makes the cooking to interpersonal relational aspect 50/50, rather than dominantly one or the other.

Basically, this show represents the crossroads between parenting anime (Bunny Drop, Kakushigoto, etc.) and a cooking/food anime, but doesn't do either particularly well enough to stand out.

Overall, this show is fine. If you want something a bit cute and a bit foodie, then you can give this a shot. But I would personally recommend the other anime I have mentioned over this.
