And yet only scanlations refer to them as male (or, early on, as female). Oh well, whatever floats your boat. I think that it's pretty awesome to have a series in which most characters are genderless, and I think that it would be sad to not acknowledge this.

And the original Japanese has them using "he" and "older brother" to refer to one another. I think it's pretty awesome to be respectful of how people choose to label themselves, personally!

Basic Summary for at least the first part: ""Slice of life"", with some action, about gem people. Protagonist Phos wants to be useful, but is garbage so they can't. They then find purpose in life in trying to find a task for Cinnabar that doesnt involve them living in isolation with compounding "suicide" thoughts.

Definitely. Thank you for saying so. ^_^

To be more correct, lacking genitals would be sexless. They could potentially still have gender. Though, if they lack the concepts of sex and gender, then yes, they would also be genderless.

Thank you for saying that. Some of us really appreciate it. ^_^ Most likely, they are using "he" and "older brother" in a non-gender sense, in the way we use singular "they" in English. That's how I'll think of it anyway.

Apart from the CG, I have to say everything else is just stunning. The premise, the characters, the premise, the setting, the bgm, and god the voice acting are just godly. I haven't heard such satisfyingly natural dialogues in anime for a long time.

Yeah i ask that too. Must be some people that hate CG and bash the Anime for no reason and hate it without even watching the first episode. Or hate it because they think it is a rippoff or like Steven Universe, which is not and I hate to a see a series to get a unfair bad score. At least it should get a better score than Black Clover or in between 7 and 8, but not under 7.

Maybe it's because of the character's "outfit" with the black & tight thing. As for anything else, it's barely similar.

I meant how their purpose in life is to fight and get destroyed over and over again, being able to get repaired only if they keep a vital part of their body. Fighting off a force from another planet for hundreds of years to no avail. Also, the way they don't actually have a gender and all have a very strict duty to work and fight kind of reminds me of YoRHa. And I don't mean completely, just a bit

Yeah. Don't worry. You're not alone. The whole moon thing and invaders reminded me of Nier: Automata. It's actually been a Nier: Automata kind of day for me. Before this episode I watched the new Yuki Yuna, and realized Okabe composed the music for it. Cool coincidence.

Anyway, this was certainly a fascinating episode. Love the art, too.

Now, seriously, it's good to see a 3d show that actually looks nice. Also, I'm surprised by the amount of expresivity that the gems can portray. Now let's just see how the rest of the anime plays out, because in terms of story it looks kinda... meh. However, I'll keep watching it till the end because I just love how the characters interact.

But anyway, it's a good first episode! The rating on MAL is terrible as usual, though.

The whole anime is CGI and it looks okay. But the story kinda confuses me. Apparently, they're all jewel-type beings. Hehe. Will take time for me to get used to this anime. It's like watching a fan-made anime. Haha.

I already love Phosphophyllite and I wanna know more about Cinnabar.

The story looks interesting, too bad about the CGI. It's not enough to make me drop a series however it's going to be hard to fully enjoy the anime. The characters help making me forget about it though; MC especially is great. The genderless (albeit female looking) race reminds me of Simoun, which is a positive thing. Will see how it goes.

You can be sarcastic as much as you want, cgi is a punch in the eye for me ^^ ofc there is plenty in normal 2d anime too; doesn't change the fact that I loathe the use of it. Do I enjoy the anime? Yes. Would I've enjoyed it more without CGI? Yes. That's all there is to it.

The characters would look much less enchanting in normal 2D, no way can they draw them to the same effect.

Well I liked this first episode. The setting is really pretty, and I think the 3D animation techniques have fit well for this anime. The character designs certainly look nice, and they are personalities I want to get to know more. So far I'm happy with where this story is heading, and will definitely continue!

I think it was the ED at the end? It definitely had an ED vibe, it was really an impressively animated ED even if you consider the 3D elements. Really nice art.

Man, this is really cool. Even though I am accepting of CG, I'm always am a little wary of it, but the show did a great job. I actually think the choice of CG allows for character design that wouldn't be possible with 2D animation. The way the hair glowed is my favorite example. The characters are clear and interesting. Even though I know Phos will no doubt be involved in more action conflicts, its nice that they just gave her a bizarre job, keeps the show interesting. Sound design and music were also great. Hope the quality keeps up.

assuming a steady 2 chapters per episode, we might get as far as shiro, and i'm really interested in how they'll animate "gold"...

as for this epsiode, it had a slyghtly different feel from the manga, but i still loved it, there's only 3 things that had my head tilting, from worst to less worst:

1: phos and beni talking: WHY THE HECK IS AT LEAST TWO PEOPLE IN THE BACKGROUND ON EVERY FRIKKING ANGLE?! does the director even understand how huge is the island and the school, there's less than 28 people on th eisland especially in the middle of they day, and they put on so many characters there?! they also felt incredibly out of place.

2: non action animations: they feel way too fluid at times for what the gems are supposed to be, like worms having to move at all costs every second, i mean, it's decent animation even if not impressive, but that's really too much.

3: the music: though to be fair it's early to say anything, the music isn't impressive, and this was especially badly felt in the manga's first scene/anime second scene, if there was no music and only the sound of the gems and of the grass it would have been way better imho.
then again i guess nothing will ever satisfy me in terms of music for houseki seeing how for me houseki's ost is tales from topographic oceans by yes... but hey, at least morga&goshe's scene was very good in terms of audio, i never noticed the lunarians/selenites use sound to balance their actions in fight.

So Pho is the only one that doesn't get to fight then. Too bad as she looks keen. So the gods come from the moon to harvest the gems and turn them into decorations how cruel. So Pho's frailty is why she hasn't been assigned a job yet then. Man Pho really is fragile though. So as long as they have all the pieces then those that were taken can be reborn then interesting. So Pho was finally given her first job then. So the gems need sunlight to be able to work effectively then. Cinnabar must be lonely due to her poison though. Her method of attack sure was pretty unique though. Cinnabar is sad because she lacks both a clear purpose and job then. Though for selfish reasons its nice seeing Pho actually does want to help Cinnabar though. An interesting first episode.

I quite liked this. Even though there will be some put off due to the CG, I think it works here since the characters are gems. It gives them a more doll like feel and thus otherworldly in a sense. Plus the backgrounds are gorgeous.

1) Well, As you have read the manga, you should know not everyone has to go out into battle(Red Beryl, Alex, etc). And even those that do don’t have to go out all the time, so it at least explains why Zircon and Yellow Dia were in the BG that one scene.
