Just when I thought he couldn't be any more naive....

fyi it's a 90s manga.

Don't expect it to get any less cheesy, it's part of the charm though.

I've watched several anime based on 90s and pre 90s manga that weren't cheesy at all so that's not really justifying how cringe worthy this show can get.

I wasn't saying it's cheesy because it's from the 90s, you misunderstood.

I'm a sucker for these kind of stories so I really enjoyed it. Shame Kagari was annoying and the episode felt so rushed though :v

Weakest episode so far, the so called "emotional scenes" were too laughable for me to even take serious and this part takes the cake xD

It's hard to take someone's opinion on "what emotional scenes should be like" who says "xD" and has prison school in his avatar and signature.

That was great, albeit it ended on a sad note. Kaji Yuki did a pretty good job tbh and I can’t wait to see what happens next time.

Well this episode really showed the source material's age. As well as Mappa's budget problems.

Are you serious? Yes the show uses many stills but each and every one of them is detailed and powerful. This is one of the best looking shows this season, I've seen so many shows this season with quality dropping every week (Arslan, Rokka no Yuusha, Gangsta, Durarara, Dragonball, God Eater needing delays to deliver anything)

In terms of quality this is probably the most consistent, it's even impressive for a show with 26 episodes. Where do you see "problems" exactly?

The emotional scenes were kind of touching but this episode was retarded. Still enjoyed it quite a bit, but seriously, wtf?

Seems the series is getting slightly less entertaining as it goes on. It's like after he screams out after killing him and the episode ends. Doesn't even bother to explain anything between that and the next episode. Unless something happened after the credits which I didn't bother to check.

This was probably my least favorite episode of the show so far, it felt overly preachy and failed to make me give a shit at all about juuro, in fact I kept wanting him to die which thankfully they did, id of hated the episode if they just let him off scott free

Really good episode. The siblings were some of my favorite characters in the manga, and this did them justice.

It was realistic at the end that not all the humans pitched in to help...that's just how life is.

Somber ending.

I can't believe that they killed Yuki Kaji's character in one episode, that's good for sure.

Other than that the episode was meh, the drama wasn't good and the message is cheesy, although I like the other two kamaitachi.

Episode I find in some places better than the last, unfortunately, the fact of going a bit in a hurry with the narrative rhythm, no way to benefit from the proposed events. The message you want to convey is understandable, but I find that in the end is incomplete, given the haste with which we are given. While this episode has shown the limits, however, in terms of technical quality, I am satisfied because the study Map is putting all the effort possible to make sure that it does not drop. Ushio is still too inexperienced as the protagonist, the hope that its growth is well managed throughout the TV series.

The Kamaitachi siblings look better as humans. I don't know why but their youkai form reminds me of Sid the sloth in Ice Age but a more bad-ass version at least.

Damn, be smart, human. You don't throw stones at a foreign beast just for the sake of it.

Contrary to most people here, for me, this is easily the best episode so far. I really like that they show both sides of us humans, not just generalizing the entire species as "cold-hearted bastards with the exception of our protagonist". Not only that, while the message may came off too strong for some people, it does its job at reminding us that our greed has inevitably lead to misfortune that befall other species. (ex: there's always construction going on in my small town, houses, estate, buildings, even though we don't have a huge enough population here to occupy those houses. A lot of them are left vacant, and they keep constructing new buildings for no reason.. I don't even..)

This was a pretty good episode, finally know what the deal is with the two characters in the most interesting shot of the OP. Also curious because of that if this is all we'll see of these youkai, or if they'll be back to I don't know fight a big bad later or something. I think the strength of these new characters buoyed this episode, because it really couldn't help but feel frustratingly monster of the week and like set up for something else. I don't know, I really enjoyed last episodes monster of the week gimmick, I think what made this one a little weaker for me was mostly the major theme.

This episode is about how humans destroy nature with little regards for other creatures that might already live there. It's a pretty common story, both in Japan and the West and a somewhat disingenuous one coming from a major producer of anime and or manga. When it becomes clear the direction it's headed (Ushio shows angry youkai humans aren't that bad) the episodes pace slows to a crawl as you count down to the saccharine ending. And god damn is it over the top, I rolled my eyes so hard at the one youkai impaling himself.

Like I said though not a terrible episode. I liked the setting of the old school japanese house in the secluded mountains. And I really liked the youkai, both their appearance and the pretty in depth explanation of their powers and tendencies. I hope they do come back and I'm sure they will at least once. After how slow this episode felt in places though, not looking forward to the presumed slog to see Ushio's mom.

Such a powerful message in this episode. That we destroy home of someone else when we build something for humans. Because of greediness of humans, despair comes to whoever's home it was.
The mood of the episode was rather dark, you can tell when there is very little comedy, that authors wants to send the message, like something is very important.
Too think that someone as kind as Juurou would turn into killing monster.
Too bad Juurou couldn't get rid of his grudge towards humans which was too big and died like this.
His death was very emotional and moving for Ushio, you can tell with the way he was repeating "Why" he just couldn't believe his eyes what happened. I wonder if his death will still remain a shock or some kind of motivation for him, or if he just forgets about it.

God, people have no patience. If you really think this is "Monster of the Week", you have no clue how good storytelling works.
Act 1 of a narrative= introduce and set up important characters.

That is what these are. This isn't Sailor Moon or something like that. Every single thing that has been set up so far, from tone, mood, characters, little details will ALL come back to be critical to the plot later on.

Anyway, about the episode now: even though it was shorter, this blew the lid off the original OVA.

This show really knows how to streamline these stories and keep the pacing fast and furious without losing any of the emotional weight.

Hell, this had almost 100x more weight to it than the dragged out other version. I just rewatched that two-parter, actually, and was pretty bored.

Glad Ushio and Tora finally got the proper adaptation it deserved. This episode is a fine example of it.

This anime is really taking plot convenience to a whole new level. Everything just always magically comes into place. Like in the beginning when those rabid squirrels or kamaitachi needed the beast spear wielder - boom, found him.

Someone can't read between the lines, apparently.

If you're referring to the last episode, first, that guy was Yuu's escort, hence why they were together. The youkai attacked the plane because the Beast Spear attracts monsters. Probably why Ushio and Tora are on foot this episode; they can't do public transportation like last time.

The original manga and even OVA of this episode state that there are rumors flying about the Beast Spear having returned, and obvious details of its rough location as well.
Keep in mind too, the series cuts from them watching Juuro's mass killing to them finding Ushio. We don't know how much time inbetween that actually passed.

Just keep in mind, because something isn't spell out in detail for you, doesn't mean it's a contrivance. The internal logic is still there, you just need to think a little more from now on to notice it.

It was changed from the manga, as Ushio and Tora switched places. I guess they needed Tora to at least partway reconcile with Kagari; but you could argue it was due to his arm still not fully healed.

Life can be cruel and unfair. At worst it can traumatize and cripple you. The desire for wanting things to return to the way they were can cost everything and changes nothing. The best way is to keep moving forward, struggle on.
Anger can be powerful but can only get you so far. Let people into your life even if some of them leave you in time.

So it's my fault for not researching more about the manga? Bruh, I was talking about the anime and the anime alone. Whatever the manga contains and how the story progresses there is out of my opinion.

Whoosh. Right over your head once again.

I guess you're someone who literally doesn't understand anything unless it's spelled out for you.

No. That is not what I said at all.

It's made more clear in the manga, yes, like Yuu's escort, but all that internal logic is still present in the anime, if you just paid attention and could read past exactly what you're given.

Example: The anime never states Yuu and her escort as such, unlike in the manga, but the fact she calls him "Ojii-san" implies right there they are not perfect strangers, or two people who knew each other that randomly happened to meet up. Also the fact that over the course of the pilot's stories about knowing and being friends of her father's, it's easy to gather from those details alone that he is either escorting her, her new guardian, or something else along those lines.

But nope, someone like you cries out "THAT MAKES NO SENSE" because you aren't implicitly told is pretty sad.

There, did I explain this enough for you, or do you need even more of it? Idiot.

Awful. I don't see why do we have to feel anything for a monster that killed humans for no good reason. Ushio's flashback used to empathize and cry was terrible. All those workers appearing out of nowhere to throw some rocks at a monster to later help it risking their lives? Laughable.
