You can check out Dominion Tank Police, Venus Wars, Heavy Metal L'gaim Gunbuster, Sonic Soldier Borgman, Giant Gorg, Panzer World Galient, Zillion, Ideon or Aura Battler Dunbine. Plawres Sanshiro may not be considered real sci-fi like Macross, but it's as much of a futuristic sports anime as IGPX. Also, Patlabor was funny and entertaining.
