How many series does it take to be considered a hardcore anime fan? How many hours of anime would you have to watch?

It would take 58 anime series of 12 episodes to equate to watching just One Piece, which has 705+ episodes. Would an anime fan who only watched One Piece be less of an anime fan than the guy who watched 58 short anime series?

What are your thoughts?

When you start spending large sums of money on anime/manga/vns and releated merchandise, then you went hardcore.

I think that the time that you spend watching anime plays a bigger factor than just how many series you've watched.

Hardcore anything is not just about one number.

It also involves depth of knowledge, diversity in experience, degree of commitment, etc.

sounds about right.

Also if Shitgatsu or Nisekoi are on the completed list they'll always be a casual.
I probably regret this post by now.

Your MAL "Completed" line on anime stats on the profile must be dark blue/black, so that's around 1000 I think.

It's not really how many in total, but how many "Quality Titles" you've watched.

The problem is every medium has a very low % of quality to crap ratio. Anime is no exception. Heck you can even make the case that for anime it is very lopsided. Where for every 1 good anime there are 100 or more "crap" series.

Difference being is that you asked how much anime you need to watch to be an Otaku and that OP here is asking how much anybody would need to watch to be considered a hardcore fan.

Well it's more the idea that for every series you think is good, there will be loads that you think is shit.

I honestly don't think that's the case, people way overstate the amount of shows that are mediocre or bad, there are plenty of decent or better titles out there.

Isn't that the same thing? That's what so many people said Otaku meant.

Depends on who you're asking... If you're asking general anime population what it means... They'll tell you the skewed definition of what they THINK it means (IE watching a TON of anime). However if you go to /a/ and ask what it means, if you don't get told to "gtfo" then they'll tell you the actual definition, and then swear up and down that they are one.

Otaku means you basically stay at home just to watch anime, you eat fatty microwavable foods or instant noodles because you don't feel like cooking and you rarely get out of the house if at all that is just to indulge in anime culture, and there's a lot more that distinguishes an anime fan from a die hard otaku. Most otaku are also highly elitist. It is not a compliment, and those who take it as a compliment just fail to acknowledge what the actual word means.

Not really. Otaku is as hardcore as it gets and is when you get incredibly obsessive about your hobby. Otakus are also usally social outcasts while you can be a hardcore anime fan and still lead a more or less normal life.

Also another important difference is that you asked for yourself while OP here asked in general so your thread is more or less a hardcore version of this one.

It's less about numbers and more about the variety and knowledge. Also having put money into your hobby and support the industry also helps a lot on the road to being respectably hardcore, like starting a DVD or manga collection.

people get butthurt over the term otaku because they have no pride in their hobby. They can still think of themselves as 'fans' even if they hide their hobby out of shame, but otaku seems to imply being open about it which is something the anime community on MAL judges very harshly since they are too ashamed to be open about it themselves.

Otakus means someone that is extremely obsessive about his hobbies and plenty of them are social outcasts. The term might have lost some negativity over the years because of how people who've no idea what the word means started self-identifying as Otakus but it's still a pejorative term.

There is also nothing wrong with hiding your hobby because of the social stigma surrounding anime. Yes, people shouldn't care that much about what others think but there are people that prioritize their social/work/school life over their hobby so they prefer hiding it.
