Not as great as the novel.

My favorite part of the whole series is the Ogawa building and all the 1st half of Paradox Spiral. It's much more detailed in the book than the anime. And somehow the complex looks less mysterious and ghostly in the anime than in my imagination of the written descriptions.

My least favorite part of the 5th book is the end, after it turned out Touko is still alive, mostly cuz I can't imagine the fights. But the last hour is truly the meat of this anime, it's so f@cking awesomeeee. Especially from when Tomoe found his "home", it's so emotional. and the fights after that is phenomenal. And the f@cking music is so GODLY!!! Especially when Shiki having that dream (of reaching the Origin??).
The Ending song this time too is also my favorite ED so far.

This movie helped me articulate the problem that I have been having with all Kara no Kyoukai movies: They are mostly built around a mystery, but the solution of the mystery is never really satisfying. This movie is the worst offender of the series in that regard.

A good mystery, when solved, is supposed to give you a feeling of: "Wow, that's how it all fits together! It all makes sense now!"

When this movie explained the rotating staircase and the Enjou family's fate I was like: "Huh. That's contrived." I guess it fit together logically, but it just felt so arbitrary, so convoluted, so pointless. Why did Araya go to all this trouble? I found Araya's motivation weak and ridiculous.

None of it felt convincing. It feels painfully obvious to me that this whole mystery was invented by an author trying to write a mystery story. I couldn't believe in the story and hence I had trouble caring about it. Movie 1 also had this problem a lot. The resolution of the mystery just made me go: "Huh. OK. Whatever."

There were good things in this movie, but I cannot understand why people love it so much. For me it is a 7/10.

I'm still confused as to how Mikiya didn't receive some serious brain damage.
Also what was the point of Alba's character at all

This was the best KnK movie so far, definitely a 7/10.

All the amazing animation and music however still suffer from the somewhat meh script and the movie's utter determination to unnecessarily confuse the audience. At least in this one, the confusingly messy structure is entirely confined to just this movie's plot, and is somewhat explained by the end - though I still think it's very unecessary.

And the series' main flaw is still regrettably present, and by that I mean it's reliance on the viewer to have actually read the novels and played type-moon games before watching it for it to make any kind of sense. I get that type-moon fans understand and love these movies, but I think that just makes them deeply flawed for not being able to stand on their own.

completely agree with the above poster (Kreol1q1q), I would have given this movie a 10/10 but unfortunatly personaly I think it deserves no more than 7/10 & that's being generous, the only problem that for me destroyed this movie is that it's soo damn confusing like wtf! I had to read so many comments & explanations on here & rewatch some of the scenes to understand it, it's almost as if those who made the movie thought that all of us have already read the source material, well I didn't, not everyone has read the source material.

This is a problem that is prevalent in ufotable adaptations, their Fate anime suffer from this as well so watch out, lol.

Also @Kreol1q1q you don't need to play any games for this.

So KnK is part of nasuverse right ? along side FSN and, tsukihime, melty blood, etc. So here I am to asked some of detail background in this mujun rasen. Could be that the academy where touko, alba, and araya was the academy for magus and actually connected to organization of clock tower in FSN UBW ?

So far this was the most fulfilling in finally answering a sense of reason to the mystifying story to Shiki's powers and how Kirie and Fujino were used to awaken her potential of having an ability of power from the origin,
even though many things are left in question.

Hopefully the rest properly clarifies her behavior and attitude of her character.

Animation, Music and Fighting are pretty well directed but I may be in minority but I didn't enjoy this movie that much. The first half was amazing especially how It was so confusing it was like what is even the reality but then I lost interest in the movie becuz of supernatural element and those magus were lame to me. Overall I am disappointed

I don't know what the fuck was the point in Alba's character. That whole bit between him and Aozaki in the middle tears the movie's pacing into two poggers halves split by a bizarre gulf of expository nonsense.

Otherwise, yeah, this was mindfucky, intense, and just got damn dope, like a climactic Day 7 in the Holy Grail War while every other movie was still piddling around on Day 1 or Day 2. Cool, cool shit. MAL didn't let me down this time.

Great movie, unique narrative style albeit it feels like they went too far down that rabbit hole to the point it's also feels way too confusing. This is where things got weird for me though, despite the narrative style that seemingly invokes confusion the movie made complete sense to me. At many parts in the movie, I wanted to think that it was needlessly vague but every time I tried to think of it like that, I realized that I understood everything that they showed and somehow the overarching plot made sense. Perhaps that was the real paradox all along. I've only ever seen the Kara no Kyoukai anime but I'm familiar with a little of Fate/ so as far as lore and terminology goes maybe I'm a little better off than someone who has no idea about Type-Moon/Nasuverse.

Some questions that still lingered in my brain after this whole thing,
1) What's the significance behind calling this movie "Paradox Spiral"? Is it a reference to Tomoe's circumstance? Araya's pursuit to find meaning in meaninglessness? Perhaps it's all of them but does it refer to something specific? I take it the Spiral comes from the building, nice touch with having narrative play out in Spiral fashion though, very cool and very unique. Kinda reminiscent of Satoshi Kon movies.

2) Was the Katana significant at all or does Shiki just break through the barrier by herself? If it was the latter, why did it take her so long? She should've been able to see the lines of death from the moment she was trapped and she should've been able to cut them too? What was stopping her for so long?

Post credit scene was adorable. Mega props for production and of course huge praise for the soundtrack, top tier stuff.

Just finished watching and it was amazing. I was very confused from some part though so that probably why this isn’t getting a 10/10 from me but everything was just so good. I really enjoyed it and it did meet my expectations. Ik this came out 10+ years ago but I did find that one fight scene with the insane spinning camera work really extra. I barely got to see anything but I was still excited during the fight though.

That was a much better compared to the previous 4 movies imo. Engaged from start to finish. Top filmmaking, the whole flashback scenes worked as intended. Although I didnt catch everything because they explaination was a bit confusing. I like the characters here. Enjou, the villains, and Touko being involved were great additions.8/10

Movie was.. good? It was filled with questionable developments. Shiki escaping confinement on spectator demand? Enjo would have been cool if he didn't fill in some very light NTR purpose. Living with Shiki for a very long time and having a lot better chemistry with Shiki than Mikiya could ever dream of. At the end i just wanted him to die as Mikiya handed him a hero role for Shiki too, why? was he some terminator we didn't get info of? why couldnt mikiya do it himself? As i said, it felt NTR-ish, but very light. This love aspect of it and giving them that much better chemistry was unnecessary.

Well that was my biggest gripes. Otherwise Ufotable could stand making the events in the movies more presentable and organized. They have some purpose to it of course, but i mean, i can't understand the minds of others, so its important to not makie it so confusing you start zoning out.

The best one and it's not just in compliment, as this time around even their take on storytelling too was better than the previous ones. Especially having Tomoe and Araya in lead characters make this one stand out.

Chronologically after the first movie, this one had a bit confusing start. You need to make sure to perceive those small details every now and then but yeah after sitting thorough almost 2 hours everything became quite clear towards the end. But still curious about the significance of that Katana to be honest. Well maybe next time. Also that after credits scene between Shiki and Mikiya<3.

An easy 9/10 for me.

if i had a nickel for every time i saw an elevator in a piece of media that doesnt move vertically up and down - but instead moves by going in a spiral direction - i'd have 2 nickels. which isnt a lot, but its weird that ive seen it twice.

anyways i really enjoyed this! i may enjoy it even more when i rewatch all the movies in chronological order and get a clearer picture of whats going on. still, i have to give myself credit for following along and having a decent idea of most of what was going on. kinda lost me at some points but i kind of grew attached to tomoe's character. really enjoyable yet heartbreaking story

Easily the best movie and the most enjoyable out of all the ones so far. The animation and the music in this was the most “movie-like” out of all of these movies, with the previous entries just looking like extended anime episodes.

This was by far the best movie out of the lot so far. The direction was superb, the idea of switching scenes around for parts of the movie was a great move. Then the animation it self was beyond good, again ufotable, shows us what they are made of. 2 hours was well worth it.

As for the plot, it was a little confusing at first with the dual sided apartment block but slowly it all came together. I quite liked Enjou as a character, he really grew from the start where he was a brash individual, but slowly he learned of his circumstances and by the end when he tried to kill Araya it was kinda sad.

hehe quite! ;)

I love Shiki! She's awesome ^^
Her ability is really cool too, and is totally the best I've encountered in any show or comic book I have come across till now...
I always wonder and think about this though, if she can see the death (or the lines) of "everything" (Including time and space apparently) can she see the "death" of death too? You know, like bringing "things" or people back to "life"?
Anyway, the 2 hours was totally worth it to watch <3

I finished watching the whole series, and definitely the 5th one is where it peaked (it went disappointingly down after). Aozaki's badass moment had me whooping, she's my favourite character of the series.

I felt a lot more sympathy for Enjou Tomoe, felt like had a lot to offer as a person and not just a mere character, in one movie compared to Kokutou in seven movies. Hell I was feeling almost teary eyed at the end. This proves that they could definitely introduce and successfully flesh out a character in a single movie. Personally I think Kokutou (and Shiki to some extent) doesn't feel like a "real" person. He's nice but that's about it, hell his sister had more character development and she has zero impact in the story. He's more of a compass than a person.
Should I feel insulted by this?

I think it's the worst one of the first five movies.

I'm not sure why they added Alba as a villain since he doesn't do anything except being a weak goon of Araya and I don't even think his absence would have changed much.
(And Araya is kinda meh too but better than Alba which isn't hard).
But my biggest issue by far is why they made all the time forward/time backward shenanigans. This makes the entire time more confusing and annoying for no gain at all.

There were some cool parts (and I suppose the reveal of Tomoe's fate was fine) but the infuriating way the story is presented ruined most of it's appeal to me.

Sorry, but I think you misunderstood this movie.

First thing, you undermine the role of Alba. He, Touko, and Araya both studied in London and they had a good relationship back then. Until Touko surpassed him and was given the title "Red", his inferiority complex arose, leading to his resentment and obsession towards Touko. It's for this reason that he decided to assist Araya in making the apartment complex with the sole purpose to take revenge on Touko. His role was to be in charge of keeping the brains of all residents alive and connecting them to the puppet's bodies. Without him, Araya's system couldn't be completed. He also was the one who directly killed Touko later in the movie, accidentally triggering her another body so that we've got a chance to fully know about Touko's true power.

Next, Araya isn't meh. His ulterior motive like other magi is to reach the "Root" to bring the destruction of reality, he believes by doing that he will be able to govern its remnants, thus allowing him to view the records of every single individual human's life on Earth. It can literally be described as "seeking wisdom within himself". Araya is really eccentric and intimidating, pretty similar to Bondrewd in Made in Abyss, another underestimated villain. His plan to attain that goal is more complicated than you think it is.
  • He and Alba together created the apartment complex to create a cyclical loop in which the puppet residents repeat their last day before death. The puppets live on one side, and the other side, hidden by a rotating elevator, is used to store their original corpses. He manages to hide the massive experiment, which would normally cause suspicions from even the smallest irregularity and the trail of information in modern society, by making it out to be a normal apartment. The purpose is to have the building form a taiji, a graphical representation of the Yin-Yang theory, and with Shiki, another Taiji placed inside the Taiji of the building, Araya would be able to reach the "Root".
  • FYI, in Nasuverse there's a concept called "Counter Force", basically a reality-warping energy that manipulates humans and events to defend humanity and the planet against extinction. In order to capture Shiki, he had to awaken her origin and bring her to his lair. But doing that directly would cause "Counter Force" to notice him. That's why he chose to pull the string behind the curtain throughout the series. The first movie revealed Araya meets Kirie in the hospital and helps her awaken her ability. In the third movie, Araya meets Fujino and offers to heal her spine with the motive is to have her fight against Shiki. Since Fujino and Kirie's origins are both "nothingness", Araya hopes these two would be able to awaken Shiki's origin, which is "emptiness". In this movie, Araya implanted the unconscious imprinting in Enjou's puppet to have him interested in Shiki, later luring her to the apartment. There're other two persons - Lio and Satsuki, who later appeared in movie 6 and 7, both contacted by Araya but they are both a failure.

Finally, the most important thing, the narrative. This movie is really uncanny since it doesn't follow normal linear storytelling but it did that purposely. Remember the title "Paradox Spiral" and the philosophy it wants to convey, the confusing narrative is to question the essence of reality, whether which is real and which is not? The scene where Enjou's mother stabs him appeared frequently turns out to actually happen in reality and wasn't just imagination or dream, it's the loop that Enjou had to experience every day.

You perhaps like other movies for action or other superficial aspects, that's kinda subjective but I honestly believe anyone who actually understands the first 4 movies will also appreciate this movie as it's the culmination of this series. And by looking at your favourite list, I think "Kara no Kyoukai" isn't a series for you sadly.

Wow 'nuff said 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Masterpiece. This movie made me speechless and it was jaw dropping. Seriously the direction and narration of this movie was absolutely fantastic. The constant back and forth between scenes was genius. The action sequence were gorgeous (especially considering that this movie came out more than a decade ago). The visuals were stunning. The CGI was stunning. The music was on point. Everything about this movie had me speechless. Enjo was definitely a very interesting character. Although I wish they didnt portray him as a love interest to Shiki but it all played out well by the end of the movie.

Tomoe's parents are the kind of people that should never breed and should die a lonely existence. Much better if they commit suicide or die from other causes early on. As an anti-natalist, I hate breeders like them. Never mind, it looks like the condo complex brought out the worst in them. But yeah, dysfunctional parents like that exist all over the world, and I despise them.

No wincest for Azaka. She's really cute, though. If I were Mikiya, I'd go for her route, even though Shiki is a fascinating woman.
I like that scene of Araya & Alba desecrating the corpse of Touko's puppet. That was kinda arousing to see.
I feel bad about Tomoe. It's another unrequited love, especially since he was dead all along.

Damn, Type-Moon villains are so relatable. I feel I can also achieve true happiness by finding or giving meaning to all the meaningless human deaths throughout history. Or rather, I am fascinated with witnessing all sorts of possible deaths. It would be much better if I could experience it from their POV.

I like the way they structured this movie. It's like putting together a jigsaw puzzle to see the picture. They made a simple story look complicated in an enjoyable way, unlike the Monogatari series. I also enjoyed the mystery and action. This is the best movie I've seen from this series so far.
