Yes, you can treat Kizumonogatari as a standalone because it's the prequel, or the very first story in the timeline. It's what triggers all the "oddities" and weird events in the later arcs. But the author wrote it after Bakemonogatari funny enough. The movies do a decent job adapting the light novel, but it the pacing does feel a bit rushed in some places. I would recommend reading the original light novel for Kizumonogatari if you can get your hands on it. You want the official licensed translation rather than a fan translation though. The fan "translation" of the light novel is usually something like google translate, which are typically terrible. But if you don't want to bother with the light novel, the movies are just fine. The animation is high budget and top notch. Kiss-shot is drawn beautifully in these three movies. In her peak form, she's like an amazon because she's tall, beautiful, strong, and has a huge bosom lmao.

I like that marriage. I like the fact that the authors behind two of my all-time favorite anime series are married together. Surely one of the most iconic couples in the animanga scene.

Adult Mayoi is much later (Monogatari 2nd season, if it's the anime).

The twins have their own arcs later on. Not so much at the beginning.

True. Both are good at showing that conflict is more than just good vs evil & a lot of mecha shows are good at that in general. So which series does it better between area 88 & war in the pocket? lol that's a tough one for me. For one i've seen 0080 twice not counting scenes re-watched multiply times, with area 88 i've watched it only once. Sorry to disappoint but I NEED TO REWATCH Area 88 again to confidently answer that question. But I think both of them obviously share the same theme about war but they convey it differently.

From my interpretation 0080 was clear that sometimes ppl can be thrusted into tragic circumstances that can be no one's fault in particular but the very war itself. Bernie said to al in his parting gift recording "don't hate others out of spite for the loss of my life, everyone is just a human being like you & me" or along those lines. Its a pretty powerful & straightforward message about war. (at least that's my simplified interpretation of war in the pocket i'm not very good at articulating my thoughts on things as well as others).

With area 88 since i've only seen it once & been watching other series currently. I've yet to take the time out to re-watch it again since 2020. My memory is foggy on it but i think 88 conveyed the anti-war message just as well 0080, but the perspective on it felt more like shin finally accepting his life style that he despises but decides to go out in a blaze of glory with the honor of his fellow comrades. But personally might be incorrect since remembering a lot of the deeper messages & themes of area 88 is difficult since I've haven't thought too much about that aspect of area 88. The animation quality, cast, music & moments is what sticks out more about area 88 for me (for now anyway). But i have no doubt there's something interesting about it that someone else can convey or explain better than i can. Thanks for asking i never thought about comparing 88 & 0080 before. I need to re-watch area 88 asap.
