I am usually bored starting a new series ( manly cause I watch a lot of ongoing series and have some unfinished ones ) so OVAs are kinda my think for the time being. Thus, I would be intrested to see your suggestions about your personal favourite OVAs.

My favorite stand-alone OVAs (in no particular order) are:

1. Gunbuster and its sequel, Diebuster.
2. FLCL
3. Golden Boy
4. Gunsmith Cats
5. Devilman: The Birth and The Demon Bird (they're super cheesy and corny, but i really enjoyed them, lol).

1. Macross Plus
2. Rurouni Kenshin Tsuiokuhen
3. Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
4. Robot Carnival
5. Kasei Yakyoku

The Rurouni Kenshin OVA can be watched as a standalone, I'm not 100% sure about the Macross and Gundam OVAs because I watched them with the full context already, they're standalone plot-wise but the setting might be a little confusing I guess if you don't at least read some wiki before watching.

My Top 3 would be the next one... although you might need to watch the main series first. That said:

1. Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku-hen
2. Hellsing Ultimate
3. Carnival Phantasm

Honorable Mentions:
- Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-hen Prologue - Sakura to Futatsu no Kuma
- Mahoutsukai no Yome: Hoshi Matsu Hito
- Shingeki no Kyojin: Kuinaki Sentaku

My favourite (original) OAVs are:
Stygian_Prisoner said:

1. Gunbuster
2. Furi kuri

And Patlabor (the original OAVs, not the ones who conclude the alternative TV show). But this one goes beyond stars only if you add the two movies to your experience.

Add Gunsmith Cats and Kenshin's Tsuioku-hen if we include derivative works (who can still stand alone). MS Gundam 0080 is very interesting too (despite using the 79 war as background).

Special mentions: Birth, Re:Cutie Honey, Iria (a prologue to two funny B-movies), Honô no Tenkôsei, Urotsukidôji (the first), Golden Boy and Devilman The Birth.

And no, I'm not going to include "War in the Pocket," even though I enjoyed it, because it's heavily overrated.

What about 0083 ? (that's the one I kept hearing about all my childhood. Every time I asked help to get to see the first Gundam or succeeded to catch someone's interest with the U.C. (hoping he would provide me the 79 one), everyone kept handing me 0083.

well, only one of them is an OVA :>

LOGH always stands for Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It seems like a very unnatural abbreviation for Log Horizon (LH seems more appropriate, or at the very least LogH).
I probably regret this post by now.

Battle Angel Alita - Damn near everything is masterfully done. The pacing is extremely quick without being disorienting, the plot is compelling without being bloated, the characters are relatable and interesting, the setting is gorgeous in its filthiness, the animation is beautiful, and so on and so on. And that ending! I love how stark, sudden, and bleak it is! That final shot leading into the ending theme is just legendary. An incredible OVA.

Golden Boy - Kintarou is just straight-up one of the funniest and most lovable characters in all of anime. This fact is incredibly important, because a raunchy sex comedy like Golden Boy would absolutely fall apart if the main character was not likable. It also helps that the ladies of each episode are also immensely enjoyable as characters and not just as boob-meat. Some great animation, top-tier directing, and a nostalgic 90s soundtrack don't hurt, either.

FLCL/Gunbuster - It's Gainax. Enough said.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

I see Tenshi no Tamago in your favs, so I can suggest watching Portrait of petite Cosette, Pale Cocoon, Memories (95).
Also you may probably like Iria Zeiram, Battle Angel Alita, Cat Soup, Tamala, Tortov Roddle.
Satoshi Kon's movies are great, too (Perfect Blue, Paprica, Paranoia Agent)

Advent children is fucking awesome lol.

@ original poster, idk if you mean stand alone OVAs or ones that accompany a series, but if you’ve seen and enjoyed The Future Diary I think it’s OvA is good, as for standalone FLCL is the only OVA series I’ve seen and it was pretty good. Overrated by some, but good.

@Hokage_Jason Well, Naruto is the only long af series I have ever seen (apart form db-dbz-db-super(GT sucks..) and one piece(ep143 so far)), though tbh i skipped some episodes/moments cause I couldn't handle SO MANY useless fillers in a 900 ep series

If you wanna watch something short in your free time, you can put your eye on Young Animator Training Project, which has been producing 4 20-30 min OVAs each year.
Also, you can try OVAs from Ga-nime project (mostly surrealism, dementia and art)

Some little advice. If you happen to watch some long (100+) series, google its filler list first and completely ignore all these fillers. It saves tons of your time since fillers are all senseless and unimportant for the story. For example, Naruto has 310 fillers out of 720 episodes. It's roughly 103 hours spent for nothing

@Nemo_Niemand I was kinda prejudiced from Naruto from all the rumours about it's filler madness so that's what I did exactly with it. After yugioh, pokemon, digimon, shaman king etc db-dbz was repressed in me cause my parents had never permitted me watching it due to it having many acts of violence etc, so I started waching it at a very young age, thus never thought and worried about skipping fillers. As for one piece, so far I have been loving this series (though it's long af and ongoing...) but I don't think I will have the need to skip any eps.
