Sometimes anime can be too short, and lots of the time it can be too long. Do you think the standard 12 episodes is enough to tell a good story or do you think that you need a longer series to accurately layout a narrative?

It depends on story whether it's long or not, whether it'll be able to fit in 12 episodes or not. Of course there are many great series with 12 episodes, but the majority of them are rushed or many parts are skipped. So overall what can I say, it depends on the story itself.

You can always do any length and make an amazing narrative. As long it is done nicely, there is no point in asking for any preferable length. Movies is prized for it's shorter run time, but able to give enough story. Why would solo movies be made if there was never an expectation to be good?

I prefer it to be longer. Too many anime feel rushed. I'd rather they take the extra time for character development. That said, it's definitely possible le to tell a great story in a single season

Having infinite episodes means, infinite lifeline. Whenever you want to go back, to reminisce on your past. Just go watch the anime with infinite episodes.

You don't even need the length of a movie. Go watch The House of Small Cubes.

I guess I tend to prefer either movies or 24(+) episodes, but it's very well possible to tell a story well within one cour. ACCA and Madoka Magica come to mind.

I prefer it to be shorter. Just because i love that hole when i finished an anime. I think about that anime for hours maybe days. That's actually why i like watching anime in the first hand.

I just prefer longer episodes, between to 24-26 because there is more to add and the pacing don't feel rushed (in most part). Of course there are great animes with 12 episodes or fewer, but generally they have the pacing problems.

I think often takes a while for me to get invested in characters and when that finaly happens I don't want it to go to "waste" cuz the series just ended quickly.
So I usually prefer long anime but it all depends on the story some just have to be short otherwise they are much less interesting

I think 12-13 is about right for me. I would love it if every amazing anime could be continued, but part of the reason some shorter anime are so great is because they manage their time and don't drag it out. However, there are stories for which 12-13 episodes is not enough for, as we often see rushed endings (fuck me Erased, Charlotte, etc.). I would much rather a 24-26 episode anime over a compressed piece of garbage.

All in all though, I think shorter is better for me.

Open to any length, as long as the quality is maintained. Definitely think that 12 episode series are too short overall though, those feel really rushed.

While the 2 cours format (24-26 episodes) is good and is deserving of the preference it's receiving on the thread, I personally like 1 cours (12-13 episodes) better. Yeah, many have pacing issues, but that serves as an easy way to sort out the good from the bad. A planned and well-executed 1 cours show gets in, gives you something you can appreciate, and gets out, leaving you wanting more while satisfied with what you got. Even some of my favorite two cours shows either drag their feet or have some form of filler, ultimately wasting your time.

Feel like most movies don't have enough time to really get an emotional connection with me, and longer shows are fine, but I've got commitment issues. Don't like sinking so much time into one franchise for the most part.

I like 6-episode series or movies typically. It's enough length to get across a message and explore an idea without becoming too bloated or repetitive. They also seem to be more willing to experiment with new ideas which is always nice. I've enjoyed some longer shows as well and you can do a good job exploring a setting with something like One Piece or Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but more often than not they end up seeming a lot longer than they need to be.

It will always depend on the type of story and what it is wanted to be told, but in general terms, it is always very difficult to tell a "great story" within only a cour, since there is little time for the proper character introduction, universe world-building, conflict development, and satisfying wrap-up, in the majority of cases a show at least needs 25 episodes to do that.

I personally prefer 50+ honestly (if I found the show good in the first place obviously), because not only that allows a greater story to be told; it also allows for more personal investment.

It depends on the genre of the show. But usually I don't have an upper limit,so I'm gonna go with 26-100+.

Some of my favorite anime are 50-64 episodes. (Eureka Seven, FMA, FMAB, Soul Eater).and I feel like I'm going to also enjoy shaman King and Beezlebub. The story for these shows are usually a lot more fleshed out.

Well, according to MALGraph 50-100 episode long anime get the highest average score from me, but personally I feel like 100+ episode series are even more desirable. A lot of the shows that have 50-100 eps could have been longer and they would have been even more memorable, but they ended early. Like Uchuu Kyoudai for example.

Ofc you can find greatness at any episode length, but with 1-cour it's pretty rare and most shows are unfinished commercials so overall I'm not a fan of that length even if a lot of my favorites are 1-cour. They simply make up such a large percentage of modern anime that it's hard not to have a bunch of 1-cour shows in your favorites, but the amount of mediocre and/or unfinished ones is way, way higher. Even a lot of the good 1 or 2-cour shows don't really feel satisfying because when they end I feel like they're just getting started or that I've finally grown really attached to them and then they just end. Heck, it even happens for longer shows. But I almost never wish a show would be shorter than it is, if I like it. And if I don't like it, the length doesn't matter anyway.

Plus in my experience having a lot of episodes just helps making me more attached to the anime almost no matter what. Ofc I have to generally not dislike what it does, but as long as it's somewhat decent the episode number alone can make a lot of difference. There's plenty of shows that would have been pretty forgettable if they ended after 1-cour but because they got 50, 100 or more episodes I managed to grow very attached to them over the years. Just by accompanying characters for a long time I feel more connected to them than I do in most shorter shows.

Pacing is more important to me, but I think that the 2-3 cour shows are the most conducive to that. There's enough time for character development and world building, but not too long that it begins to drag its feet. Short shows are easy to consume, but can lack as big an impact as something twice as long. I think its harder to pull off a longer series at a high level. There are plenty of exceptions like FMAB and to some extent Gintama, but after too long a show starts to get stale and stops feeling fresh and intriguing.
It's not like I like anime or anything.

I think 12 to 26 is optimal, but it really does depend

For instance, there was this movie I watched that would've been a lot better if it was about 12 episodes instead of an hour and a half

But there are also shows that do very well as 200+ endeavors, but those are really hard to get into, especially if you don't have a lot of time, one of the main reasons I haven't watched Gintama yet, even though I'd like to

It really depends on whose making it, what the story is, and so on

I like double cours a lot. Otherwise they are too short to come to a conclusion, unless they are original. Since most anime are adaptions and the way the industry works highly favours long manga/LN even double cours might not be enough.

What happens a lot with 1 cour anime is that they either go anime original, which doesnt have to be bad but usually is, or they end in a cliffhanger and never get a conclusion.

Just imagine LotR, crammed into ~4 hours

12-13 episode ones are the ones i'm most likely to finish promptly but it really
just depends on my level of interest and investment into the story.
