This is something I realized just now, but part of why I like Hibiike so much is not only realistic characters but Kumiko's monologues as well. Really adds to the depth and give the story sort of an oomph.

And while I wasn't a big fan of Asuka in S1 but I'm liking her more now as this season is going to revolve around her (judging from the last pic of the OP. if not, she is at least getting a good-length arc for sure) we are getting more character insight.

Ahh I love Hibike. It got drama right on mark. Riina was really cute there with her "Taki radar" I love these two's bond as much as always, the futon scene was too cute

For once, we have pool episode done right. Instead of stupid fanservice, we got stuff which adds to the plot. I just saw Musaigen's OVA (and it was a beach episode) so I noticed how different the mood was despite it being the same studio and the same quality animation. Honestly, good direction can really change a work and do the hardwork done in the art some justice.

I love the choreography of the ED song, the song is good too.

The monologues also serve a different purpose (mum's the word).

Seriously, it still baffles me that both Hibike! Euphonium and Musaigen no Phantom World are both directed by Ishihara Tatsuya. While I have loved everything he has ever worked on, the blame is entirely on Ishihara and KyotoAnimation on Musaigen's failure. It is their first adaptation that just assumed characters and concept from an original story (novel, VN, LN, manga) but completely and utterly derailed from the story itself. Musaigen no Phantom World, if adapted properly, would have been KyotoAnimation's darkest adaptation yet (queue in Kyoukai no Kanata, FMP TSR or the joint adaptation of InuYasha movies with Sunrise Inc. which pale in comparison when it comes to Musaigen's dark story).

@VersoSciolto: great look up! :)

Hmm what purpose might that be I wonder. Hinting Kumiko's development?

Yea, I heard that they adapted all the lighthearted moments (with some original moments as well?) and didn't get into the dark stuff at all. Its disappointing. I only like Mai, rest are pretty much forgettable. It's surprising how the same guy can direct one anime perfectly and not the other. I wonder why he didn't take the risk of doing the dark stuff. Is that even good kind of advertisment? I mean the fans who would like the anime, would expect the story to remain the same and read the novel, only to be potentially turned off by the plot twist. It's much better to insert dark stuff in the actual anime itself to earn fans who would "stick" with the novel. No doubt it kinda lost its appeal by the mid of it (until ep 11 or something)

Said it last week and she appears almost immediately a week afterwards. Niiyama is gorgeous. Reina's dead-fish reaction was beautiful, as was the pool segment. Not only did we get to see a whole plethora of eye-candy, but we also had some additional reveals to the plot.
Especially loved how they managed to continue that little joke of refreshing Kumiko's belief that her chest will grow once they get into high school (ala season 1 body check episode) after looking at Reina's figure. Love how a lot of the little stuff from both seasons manage to tie together.

Want to see what the big rift that split up Nozomi and Mizore was. I get the feeling it has something to do with Nozomi not telling Mizore to leave the band with her (so basically a big misunderstanding of each other's true intentions of their actions), but the fact that Mizore looked spooked in episode 1 when hearing her name may indicate otherwise....

Asuka without glasses is a perfect 10x10x10, but Midori is still my fav. I'm surprised she didn't bring Kohaku to play in the pool though, it would have been the perfect opportunity to showcase her.

Just one question for those in the know, who was that fourth girl waiting for Kumiko at the pool area? I'm talking about the one playing Janken with Hazuki. Feel like I've never seen her before?

this episode was great! I'm really feeling these characters again.

I really love how KyoAni always brings more realism to their work. in the pool scenes all the girls have great bodies, but they are not *unrealistic* - the proportions between hips, stomach and thighs are not blown out like so often in many anime.

I really can't get enough Kumiko. It really doesn't matter which character we are focusing on as long as its through her lens. the 2nd to last scene with her and Reina was pretty.

This season is gonna give us all the basic school anime stuff we couldn't get in the first season. I know it. It's only been two episodes, and we've already gotten both a festival and a pool episode. But whatever, it's Hibiki Euphonium drama and greatness that I look forward too. Poor Reina with her dead fish eyes just witnessed her male love interacting with someone old enough for him to be with, but at least she still has her female love.

I was afraid of second episode being a pool-fanservice one, but it was a lot better than I expected! We got Nozomi's part of story, next one is Asuka's, and that's pretty much all I need right now, sweet. I've already started caring for this whole drama, and it just started one week ago!

Also, these dead eyes of poor Reina, loved it >:D

-Yeah, after listening to it a bunch, I actually like the new OP a lot
-Sidetail Kumiko looks different
-I can't seem to remember what the flashback at the end of the Kumiko and Nozomi scene at the pool was in reference to
-The whole pool scene was far more substantial than I thought it would be
-The cut to Green sapphire after Niiyama sensei's introduction immediately reminded me of https://twitter.com/i_akari_daisuki
-Interesting symbolism behind those beetles
-After hearing more of the backstory behind the incident that happened the previous year (with the Kumiko and Natsuki camp scene), I still don't dislike any of the characters that have names. Everyone's just trying to do the best they can in the given circumstances, and it's really hard to hate on them for that.
-The scene with Kumiko and Mizore was pretty interesting since it revealed everything related to Mizore's inner conflict solely through flashbacks
-Reina's wiggle toward Kumiko was fucking adorable

Even while reading through the thread, no one seemed to mention where the flashback to season 1 during the first episode came from.

Like some other people already posted, having a pool episode (or at least half of a pool episode) that had a focus on Nozomi's character development. The episode as a whole was pretty much focused on characters, with a split between the new characters (Nozomi and Mizore) and the old ones (like Natsuki and Asuka), so the entire episode was dedicated to my second favorite thing about the show. It's pretty hard for me to outright dislike any of them so far because of the way the backstories are presented. Also, just like the first episode, my absolute favorite scene in the episode was the one with Kumiko and Mizore on the first night of band camp. They revealed Mizore's inner conflict through flashbacks of events that have already had some exposition in the show, but they didn't outright say it. From the flashbacks, it seems like the expectations of her promise to Nozomi were way too high for the reality of getting gold at the first competition, probably because Mizore expected Nozomi to be there with her.

This season continues to incorporate the best elements from the first season within it, while in general staying away from overly empty, artsy shots or redundant progression.

Looks like Tomoe Kabe, to me. The trumpet playing friend of Natsuki and Yuko. She appears in several scenes but is perhaps most prominently visible in their company at the festival...

Forgot to include that Oshiroibana is a seasonal word, associated with autumn. Sakura is associated with spring.

I know you prefer not to provide details from the novels and merely mention them cryptically but I'm curious -and perhaps you can answer in a general way- if Takeda used flowers in her novels at all?

Perhaps you can also answer in general if she explains the contents or background stories of certain musical pieces she selected? So far we know that certain pieces impact certain characters because of their personal association or identification with a particular performance of a particular work but I'm curious if the themes in the music itself played any role in their selection. We know that Taki asked Asuka to explain at least one piece, Crescent Moon Dance, which she then danced and briefly described, to enhance the band's interpretation through their understanding of the emotions the composer wanted to convey. Are there instances like that in the novels? Does she touch on the thematic elements of the compositions? Are the performed musical pieces the same?

That bi**h! Don't worry you still got your chance to win Senpai's heart. Regardless Kumiko-chan will always be by your side (though I ship those two).

We get to know more about the band and Nozomi's situation and why she left the band. Poor girl. I am glad there is someone that cares for past members of the club. Wow, I got to give it to Kumiko, she has a strong determination. U got to do what ya promised. So I am hyped for the conversation between Kumiko-chan and Asuka-senpai. another spectacular episode kousaka bae was looking mighty fine in her swimsuit, and oumae has gotten down to helping us understand the whole incident with the third years and nozomi. I thought they were going to have us guessing with yoroizuka and her true feelings and reason behind the situation to my knowledge its about keeping that promise upheld and with bae 2 natsuki its about her feeling the need to payback a debt to nozomi. I enjoy how asuka senpai's character is hard to read like one minute shes expressing herself this way then the next shes that and it confuses you lol shes difficult to understand i'm looking forward to how their going to reveal her true intentions.

Nice pool outfits (& plot). Nozomi that double layer fancy, she kinda looks like Izumi from Musaigen.
Reina curry fail
New woodwind sensei & public flirting with Taki was fabulous.
Natsuki, Mizore discussions were good. Somethin like 2nd yr had conflict with lazy 3rd years who get chosen for the competition w/o audition. 2nd yr did a mass resignation. Shows Nozomi's pres sense of responsibility, but maybe the wrong choice & Natsuki trying to atone. Mizore's reasons for staying.

Asuka is absolutely chilling when she drops the facade. I think the best part of the conflict between her and Nozomi is that I can empathize with Nozomi, but still mostly agree with Asuka, even though she's a jerk about it.

Kumiko continues to meddle in other people's affairs. I don't mean this is a bad way, but it's possible that her efforts will not work out the way she intended. It's possible that she only seems more meddlesome because she's not facing any serious internal conflict of her own, as she did in the first season.

Reina's feelings for Taki-sensei are causing increasingly more pain for her. I wonder how long she can keep it up. I also feel like Kumiko's efforts won't help, as the best solution is usually a confession. It would be interesting to see how Reina would handle rejection, in comparison to Hazuki.

Mizore could be a cool foil for Reina. They both have a strong conviction for the art, but Mizore's motivation comes from a totally different place. She plays the rythm game without sound, and plays in the band without any apparent joy or other reward. I wonder if she's only staying in the band because of Nozomi's wish (no pun intended) to do better in high school.

Natsuki and Yuuko seem to have become friends, even though they wouldn't admit it. That's kind of cute.

Those are some loud earphones Kumiko has got, though, for Nagato clone to be able to hear the music from so far away.

First we got a Yuki Nagato clone and now the annoying ribbon girl was looking a lot like Dekomori in this episode.

And lots of cute Reina moments, especially the way she beckoned Kumiko when they were sleeping in the futons.
