Uchuu Kyoudai is an equal-opportunity stereotyper. The Indian woman is thought to have mystical fortune-telling powers, for instance. The Jamaican character doesn't smoke ganja, since drug use is verboten in most anime, but he has the attention span of gnat. Still it's one thing for the mangaka to be oblivious, but A-1 is a large studio with presumably some staff devoted to research. It's just remarkable to me that no one ever suggested that the "Buddy Gorilla" character might not be appropriate. What's worse is that the 4-koma side strip on which these episodes are based was explicitly intended for Japanese children. |
