I've loved Zoro since he first appeared, but now he's one of my favorite Anime/Manga characters along with Luffy. This series pwns! I love Nami too, you never know what she's going to do next. Sanji seems pretty bad-ass too, can't wait to see more of him.

lol I remember this part in the manga, but geez. Honestly, watching that one-sided fight between Hawkeyes and Zoro was fun. Little tiny dagger versus three katana is win.

Also, him respecting Zoro that much put a tear in mah eye. ;'D

I watched the first 16 episodes a couple years ago but I know if I had stuck too it and watched this episode that I would have kept watching.

It was amazing to be able to watch Zoro take a huge leap in character growth. This has to be one of the best episodes I've ever seen so far.

My thoughts during this episode:

After watching this, I've started to wonder if the entire episode dedicated to Zoro and his past was really needed. The flashbacks during the fight pretty much told the whole story.

Ending was kind of predictible - the series would be over pretty quickly if Luffy actually stayed on that restaurant ship for a year :P

The promise is made.

Even after years of re-watching it over and over, This episode never fails to remind me...

Roronoa Zoro, the greatest anime character of all time. I have been reminded of my purpose in life once again.

East Blue arc is definitely the most classic, magical and heart-fulfilling. The nostalgia factor alone makes this one of my favourite arcs of all anime. I'll always end up re-watching it.

For all of you first time watchers... IT ONLY GOES UP HILL FROM HERE.

Well, it was nice taking a break to comment on 2 episodes, I'm going all out from here to relive the first half of my childhood journey once again!

It's about time Luffy showed his powers to them. I like seeing people's reactions to it.

And I'm glad he's finally finding a way to leave the restaurant. I knew he wasn't gonna stay a full year though.

Cool episode.
I really liked the animation in the beginning when Don Krieg's ship was sinking.
The sword fight was also pretty well done.
Although, Milhawk is a bit of a weird character... his design and dialogue reminds me of Naruto villains (which is the last thing I want to be reminded of).
I do like how he fought honorably with Zoro, though.

Episode 24:

Seems Nami have some connection to Arlong and from the look of things, it's doesn't look good at all :3

Pirate Hunter Zoro vs. Dracule Mihawk (The World's strongest Swordsman)
Zoro fights admirably but in the end he has to accept defeat himself against the worlds strongest Swordsman :3

Dracule Mihawk becomes interested in Zoro and Luffy who stood aside and let his comrade fight

Zoro makes a heartfelt speech to Luffy before leaving with Usopp to catch up with Nami :3

And the episode ends with Luffy and the Cooks prepares to fight Don Krieg and his men :3

A really great episode :3

I told my friend yesterday that One Piece does everything Dragon Ball does but better, except for the fights. This fight was top 5 anime fights ever for me, so it's a sign that One Piece may do literally everything better(except for villains maybe). The one thing I would change would be the flashback spam we got, we already saw his backstory, all that needed to happen was to flash that girls face and hear him think and say what he did. Complete spoon feeding, but at least it was only for a minute or so. Zoro is my hero officially. I loved when he turned around, arms open accepting death because "scars on a swordsman back is his biggest shame". You know he's the best when he gets Dracule(a) Mihawk's respect. This fight did not only have immense meaning, plot development, out of this world gar moments, and a heart warming ending, but it was also only one episode. My favorite kind of fight, short, sweet, powerful.

Some thoughts I had:
Mihawk is actually a pretty cool guy and I don't really see him as being a bad guy at all. In fact the guy he came to kill was one of the biggest bastards ever. More so I think he's like chaotic neutral.
And secondly, I think Sanji may be Zeff's son! It just came to me, both have the same fighting style, both are blonde, both have the same sentiments, and Sanji wants to take over for the restaurant even though they don't get along at all. I can only imagine they're father and son.

Well, he didn't stand a chance against Mihawk, at least he didn't get his white sword shattered.

That overwhelming fight with Dracule never ceases to amaze me. He was just reaching out his dagger arm while Zoro comes at him with three swords slashing at all directions and he still managed to stab him in the chest at close range. That's what happens when a new player challenges the last boss right from the get go and that taste of defeat made his resolve of never losing in another fight on his way to the top even stronger than ever before.

Don Krieg trying to do a surprise attack on Mihawk after seeing what he's capable of is pretty dumb lol

Now 542 episodes in, I came back to this sequence and what a brilliant sequence it is. Zoro has some fantastic duels in the future but this is the epitome of what a duel can do. In a brief moment Mihawk takes up Zoro's challenge and sees the exceptional guts he has. He was starving to win but when even struck down he refused to back up, refusing to miss out on this fight no matter what and taking it wholly, as a win or death. When he sees that spirit he sees potential in Zoro and he sees him as more than a mere insect, asking for his name and deciding he's worthy of the strongest blade in the world. There is a conversation of spirit and ambition happening through action, and when Zoro loses he turns to embrace his death.
  • "A wound on the back is a swordsman's shame!"
  • "Magnificent!"
As Mihawk slashes down Zoro's body with respect. In this one fight he saw rare potential and like Shanks gave Luffy a hat to return to him one day, Mihawk gave Zoro a scar to return one day too.

It's poetic, and striking and brilliant. So much is understood through so little, Sanji realizes the ambition these idiots hold, Usopp notices Luffy as he holds back Zoro's friends out of respect for Zoro's ambition and duel despite losing it in rage when he thinks he's died. Mihawk notices that Luffy held back and gave this fight to Zoro and when challenged with an even bigger ambition he gives words of approval to the duo. Then there's lines like, "Frog in the well, know how big the world is."

When I first saw this I had thought it was super amazing and GAR and cool and said everything we needed to know about Zoro. But now I see this as even more than that. As a dialogue, a weird student teacher relationship forming in one powerful instance, and possibly Mihawk seeing a younger version of himself in Zoro. If all that's true, then one day when Zoro takes down Mihawk that sword may be passed along right to him. And I suppose his ambition will be met.
